  1. Christians vs. Social Darwinism

Spencer’s survival of the fittest, applied to economics, found allies among industrialists who framed poverty as natural unfitness. Theologians Gladden and Rauschenbusch, with economist Ely, rejected this, arguing Providence governs society, not nature, and competition contradicted the kingdom of God. Their framework leaned on Reformed common grace and imago Dei, insisting worth as God’s image-bearer overrode claims the weak deserved to lose. #socialgospel

  2. On 10 October the #EpiscopalChurch commemorates #VidaDuttonScudder (1861-1954) an educator, writer, lesbian, & activist in the #SocialGospel movement. A professor of literature at Wellesley College from 1892-1927, she was also a founder of Dennison House (a women’s settlement house) & the Episcopal Church Socialist League as well as an organizer of the Federal Labor Union. After retiring from teaching, she extensively studied Franciscans & publishing a book in 1931 established her as a leading Franciscan scholar of the time. She also received an LLD degree from Nashotah House in 1942.

    Her #collect is:

Most gracious God, you sent your beloved Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Raise up in your church witnesses who, after the example of your servant Vida Dutton Scudder, stand firm in proclaiming the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

  5. I'm trying to find the Catholic Church's stance on eugenics and the promotion of eugenicist policy. I'm wondering how disabled Catholics are included in the life of the Church. Does anyone know where I can learn more about the Church and eugenics in general, and it's stance on marriage equality for disabled people specifically?

I also am wondering how the Church and disability might overlap with the philosophy and historic institution of limpieza de sangre, the Casta system, eugenics, and the Inherent Dignity of a Human Person. In my search for answers to my initial question I found these other possibly related threads. Do you know where I can find primary documents regarding these as well?
