  3. 6/n…what humans have managed to achieve in the planetary sense is to shrink a lifetime that naturally had at least a few million years for problem solving left in it to one in which…there is very little time for problem solving. Remarkable.

  4. A Day in the Life of a Writer

    I normally don’t write things like this.

    Trauma is always quite high on my thoughts-list, especially since I am so active in RAINN and other volunteer areas. My daughters are also first in my mind. The stories I’m writing are there, too, but the shape of them usually winds up as a sample chapter or a “this chapter made me think of some deep rabbit hole we can go spiraling in together.

    Not so tonight.

    Over the last couple weeks, three very different characters have been living in my head: one from Moin and Marrow and two who were brand new, Aissata & Malika. Aissata is Malika’s great-grandmother, their stories are a century apart, and I’ve been quietly collecting a ton of research that I assumed wouldn’t be used until after I finished Moin & Marrow.

    My characters are sneaky people, though.

    And I am 100% character driven.

    So, because I couldn’t get Storymere out of my head, I thought, okay, I’ll try it. Writing two books at the same time is something I’ve never even contemplated doing. Honestly, the thought itself exhausts me. My historical books aren’t just look up a few details and then use creative license. They are intense research that involves way more than reading a book or two. The cultural and historical context matters because that is how I build my worlds and immersive fiction is my happy place.

    I wasn’t sure about this at all. But I have learned over 40 years to trust my characters.

    So, here we are. One full week into writing two very heavy, very hard books.

    I thought I’d share my process.

    The Plan

    1. Six out of seven days spent actually writing.
      1. Monday-Wednesday with Moin & Marrow.
      2. Thursday: Chapter Chat email, editing whatever needs it, and a day to breathe before switching worlds.
      3. Friday-Sunday: Storymere
        1. Writing is divided into two blocks during the day – two hours very early in the morning and three hours very late in the evening. This allows me to break for “real life” and “real work” and motherhood and all the other things during the day. Crucially, it also allows me to start each day with my characters and gives me a break usually when I most need it.
    2. Goals:
      1. 3,000 words per writing day / 9,000 words per book per week / 18,000 words total per week.
        5 hours of writing per day
      2. Exception: trauma chapters. Trauma chapters involve my history and sometimes leave me feeling frozen or very vulnerable. So, on days where there is a trauma chapter involved, the goal is to finish the trauma scene without emotionally collapsing.
        1. This exception was very important. Because I have a tendency to “push through.” I also have a thing about expectations. If I expect to do or achieve something, and I don’t, it can quickly spiral into a so then I failed loop which can paralyze me. Even though the 3,000 / wpd is an arbitrary number I created simply because I know that I typically write that per day, it feels like an expectation. So the exception gives me “permission” to slow down when I know I’ll need to.

    Week One Reality:

    Stats after six days of writing and one transition day

    Móin & Marrow: 11,982 actual words / 9,000 expected words
    Storymere: 10,988 actual words/ 9,000 expected words
    Combined goal: 18,000 words
    Combined actual: 22,970 words
    Overage / Deficit: +4,970 words

    In other words, I exceeded the goal for both books, finishing above target. The bigger win, for me, was that it didn’t feel like a race; it was pretty much my natural habitat.

    When I write, my process is very structured.

    Before starting, I read over the chapter I’m either in or starting and the next chapter so that I know what’s coming up. Below is a sample of my outline for Storymere.

    Writing 22,970 completed / revised / edited words in 6 days may be more or less than “real” authors; I have no idea. But, for me, it makes me feel like my characters are real, breathing people.

    What was hard?

    1. I thought switching worlds would be hard. But because I deliberately included Thursday as an “off” day between books, it allowed me to ease into writing a different world. I also worried that they might “feel” the same but they don’t. I know what Awa will have for breakfast. I know Breaca values freedom enough to break rules; she’d be excited about the possibility of skipping school to race boats along the river whereas Aissata would rather a hole open up in the earth and swallow her whole than risk disappointing a single adult in her life. If Awa says, “I’m not hungry” — it is a red flag because that child is always sneaking groundnuts or dates or food. I eat, sleep and breathe their worlds which makes my writing hopefully feel alive.

    2. I think the hardest part is what’s always been the hardest part: scene breaks, the first word of the chapter. The first line of any of these is the hardest. Once I know how a scene opens, I’m good to go. But I can often stare at a blinking black line in Word and go, “I got nothing.”

    A few things to note about the outline:

    1. I call outlines “story maps.”
      1. Story Maps are not just outlines. The one for Storymere is 54 pages. It includes character sketches/summaries, all of my research broken out by topic, blurb/summary of the book, structure of the book. In the below, row one says this is section 1, chapter 2, with Aissata’s POV; estimated and actual word counts, setting for the chapter, key goals with the chapter and any notes I need to make the chapter work and then the beats that I want in the chapter. You can also see in the notes “Chapter Spine” – every beat in the chapter should work to achieve the spine’s goal. If it doesn’t, then I rethink the scene, add to it, delete from it, or move it. Links jump me to research that I will likely need to make certain scenes work. For instance, “daily prayers” links to a section in the story map that details Muslim prayer routines, phrases, times, practices, etc. In the second row, you can see Samba is a link: that jumps me to his character sketch.

        Every section has a “blue box” that tells me what the ultimate goal or purpose of the section (as a whole) should be. It keeps rabbit trails to a minimum. Note the little comment box at the far right of the blue box. I use comments in word to expand an idea / important note that I need for myself but that I don’t want to dedicate actual space to.

      2. I write scene by scene. And writing it does not mean ‘rough draft. ‘ I draft the scene. And then I go back over the scene with three line-level edits for grammatical, historical and continuity checks. This helps me ensure that the book is clean scene by scene while I’m in it. Only after the revisions, edits, line level and historical integrity checks do I call that chapter complete. The checkboxes are marked after the words are written and revised three times. The whole row is shaded green once the whole chapter is “complete.”

        Revising / editing at the scene level as I write has helped my books be so much better because it’s current when I’m editing – I know what my intent was: was something a stylistic or deliberate choice, characterization? Or was it an error?

    Some questions others ask me:

    Do you use AI?

    1. Anything that makes it into the book is the product of my brain and nothing else.
      1. I do not use AI to generate ideas or sentences that end up in any scene.
      2. My research methods. I love research and also it’s the way I make my books feel lived in. To research, I:
        1. Live in a few websites: WHO, U.S Department of Justice, JSTOR (it gives me scholarly articles/newspapers, etc), United Nations.

        2. Have a few specific journalists, like Nicholas Kristoff, whose work on human rights issues I admire greatly, that I hope and pray have written extensively about the time or place or issue I’m writing about.

        3. Use real people. For Taramul Viselor, I was able to speak to a caretaker who worked inside an institution. I also contacted the former President of a radio station to seek transcripts of actual radio broadcasts with dissenters. I also asked Romanian citizens to give me recipes, games, and feelings about their culture. For Remember the Nightingale, I interviewed a Hutu and a Tutsi about their experiences. I visited Auschwitz for books like Ash.

          I use AI for:

          1. I do ask AI to give me a list of primary sources on a topic, and book titles to kickstart my literary research. It will usually generate a handful of helpful ones.

          2. I will sometimes use it for quick, solid answers like: “do squirrels live in Papua New Guinea?” or “what’s the Polish word for bowl?”

          3. It is difficult for me to read geographical descriptions and picture it in my head. So, if you tell me, there are “mountains to the west and a river to the east with acacias.” I have a general idea, but it doesn’t tell me what the landscape LOOKS like. So, I take the details my traditional research has given me – like topographical details – and ask AI to generate maps. this helps me see the broad landscape. These images never make it into a book – they are helpful tools for me to understand the land.

          For Storymere specifically, the cast was so large, I needed a visual to help me easily see relationships. This family tree helps with this.

    How rigid is your story map / outline?

    • I deliberately make this so that it’s flexible. While it is very structured once I draft the outline for the section, I deliberately do not draft the outline for the whole novel. In the below image, you can see Section 2 is blank. That’s because section 1 is not complete. This allows me to incorporate or expand ideas / motifs / symbols that I did not expect to happen but that showed up anyway during the writing. A very good example of this is the witches’ voice in Echoes of a Wild Girl’s Drum. They were never meant to have their own voice. But, during the actual writing of section one, I realized I wanted to know more about them than what Soryelle or Maikel’s POVs could give me. They needed their own voice.

      I was able to work that in seamlessly through the rest of the book because its outline wasn’t drafted yet. So I could easily slot beats or entire chapters in without disrupting or changing the heart of the section. I usually start drafting the outline for the next section when I’ve got about two or three chapters remaining in the current section. At that point, I’m close enough to the end of the section to know what the motifs/symbols/subplots have emerged and which ones I want to carry through.
    • Another example is actually in Storymere. I’m only on chapter three right now but already the idea of colors has become important and that was not something I anticipated. Since it’s here, though, it’s likely one I will deliberately use moving forward to deepen the story.

      Ultimately, my stories are about my characters. If a character doesn’t like something in a beat, that beat doesn’t get written. They are helpful because they help me keep everything organized and they also help me ensure I tie up loose ends and plant “seeds” for the readers that carry the book. But they are not set in stone: they evolve just like the characters do.

    What do your character sketches include?

    1. See below. The thing is: central want – I will return to this frequently to make sure I’m building the character who has lived in my head for weeks or months. The physical traits help me keep hair colors and things straight. For Storymere specifically, the character sketches are doubly important because it shows inherited traits. For example, the “starburst” eyes and how this gene shows up a century later in Aissata’s descendants.

    Is writing fun?

    Yes… It is also a lot of work. And it is also very emotional. But the characters are my friends and they enable me to touch very real, very sensitive things, very hard memories that I can’t otherwise touch. They serve a very important role in my life. Watching their stories become full … matters.

    How do you think of the settings / topics for your books?

    Okay, so, let’s stay with Storymere as an example.

    I didn’t see Aissata first; I saw Malika and I knew her name (that’s important). And I knew that FGM (female genital mutilation) was part of her story. I didn’t think, “I want to write about FGM,” I saw a girl in my head who was a survivor of that. While the topic has been on my “interesting; I think I want to cover that” list for awhile, it wasn’t something I was ever sure I’d write about.

    The other thing that happened was I saw an old character I love. That character said, “Come mere.” Many years ago, in the middle of being raped, my ceiling opened up; the plaster became mountains and I simply didn’t feel as much as I had moments earlier. I watched my characters enact entire scenes that I would then go on to write in a book. But. Intense pain — the moment of penetration — had the power to collapse the entire scene and throw me back into reality right as the pain was unbearable. It wasn’t usually long because I would immediately panic, feeling as though I couldn’t breathe again and, once the moment of pain started to dull, I could find my characters again. Once, sliding down a hill, one of them said, “Tiffini, look!” loud enough to literally pull my mind away from what was happening to my body. I looked and saw a horse running toward me. I could breathe easier and the pain became numbed a little more.

    So, when this old character said, Come ‘mere, I knew where ‘mere was: it was the ceiling. It was the magical world that opened up right when I needed it the most. It was dissociation.

    That made me cry.

    I’ve written dissociation in many books. But never about dissociation. Storymere is quite literally how I survived childhood rape. Now, I knew three things: Malika was my character’s name, she survived FGM and her book wasn’t really about FGM as much as it was surviving trauma through dissociation.

    So I went to the WHO site and started researching places where FGM occurs. Once I had a solid list, I went a little deeper. I wanted to know of these countries, which ones also face other human rights issues and what are they? WHO helped me narrow that down. Suddenly, I learned about inherited dependency and how this same country where FGM was practiced and that faced post-abolitionist slavery (was the last in the world to abolish and criminalize slavery, actually) also held zina law. I read specific cases — actual cases — of some brutal things.

    The deeper I researched this country, the more I knew: this is where Malika is.

    And that guided the rest of the research. At the same time I was research her land and home, I was also expanding her story as she told me more. Soon, I understand that I couldn’t just write Malika’s story because it was integrated with her ancestors. And so we have Aissata and slavery and the whole century between the two girls.

    Sometimes it’s much simpler.

    For Dance for Me, I had an image – very distinct, very clear – of Maelea’s home and her first words to me were “write about my home.” Curiously, despite knowing what it looked like, I had no idea where she was from. I wanted her from the United States because I wanted to show that trafficking is not a “third world problem.” Lo and behold, that was not her story. I knew from the image that she wasn’t American and that she was somewhere in poverty. I researched “third world images” and on the first page there was an image that matched the one in my head down to the dog. I clicked until I found where the image was taken: Cambodia. And then I started researching how prevalent the issue of child trafficking was there and – well, that was my story.

    When do you expect the two books, Moin & Marrow and Storymere to be finished?

    If pace continues, and the story stays true to what I think it will, Moin and Marrow will be the lighter of the two. I anticipate it landing somewhere around 100-120K words. I should finish that sometime in December but I’m allowing for delays due to holidays or exhaustion or trauma chapters and saying end of January.

    I expect Storymere to be longer, somewhere around 150-170K words, which should add a week or two. Mathematically, if the pace holds, both could be finished by the end of January 2007

    Have you always had the same process?

    I’ve always written ridiculously detailed outlines, yes. There have been a couple of notable exceptions: The Character and Ash and Forget Me Not were written 100% without outlines. Actually, they were written as individual scenes – they were not even in order. The thought terrifies me now. But, again, I write whatever the character says write. Other than those exceptions, I’ve always worked with an outline. Below is an outline for a book I wrote in the 9th grade. Dare you to try to decipher.

    What’s your writing process?

  5. EXCLUSIVE Santa Column: The Quest to Fit a New Doorbell 🔔

    Last time out, Santa fitted new front doors to the factory. This time out, a new doorbell was in order. Father Christmas categorises this as his “quest” to find the ideal doorbell and his obsession with his quest turns out to be ever so slightly deranged. Indeed.

    Santa Seeks a New Doorball

    Santa is a on a quest to find the ideal doorball. With the new factory gates fitted out back, rather than at the front (because of a technicality), Santa needs something to indicate to the factory that there is a bastard at the door who needs either slaying hideously, shooing away, or stealing their property. It needs to be a really, really, really, really, really good one. Like, when some communist or workshy freeloader presses the button it needs to COMMAND RESPECT and sound out as it is Satan braying from the heavens that someone is at the door and Markus, my head elf, needs to answer the, aforementioned, door and get the goods and/or slay the communist.

    Thus, Santa got on the case to get the doorball. Santa looked up a company on The World Wide Internets and rang the doorball company over the phone, the company is located in Bolton of Greater Manchester. This is the conversation Santa endured.

    “HELLO! Is this the doorball company?!” I bellowed down the phone.

    “Wot?!”

    “THE DOORBALL COMPANY?!” Santa roared.

    After a long silence the response came, “We sell doorbells, mate.”

    “THAT IS WHAT SANTA SAID! GIVE ME THE DOORBALL!” I roared once more.

    “Mate, cram a sock in it with t’ shoutin’, what do you want?!?”

    “A doorball for my Santa factory! I need one so when some communist or workshy freeloader presses the button it COMMANDS RESPECT and sounds out hard and long as if it is Satan braying from the heavens that someone is at the door and Markus, my head elf, needs to answer the, aforementioned, door and get the goods and/or slay the communist.”

    The guy hung up on Santa after that statement and, outraged, I immediately went and put him on my official naughty list. A vast list condemning bastard SOBs to a Christmas 2026 with no presents. Serves them right! This was my note:

    NAUGHTY LIST ENTRY 451,342,123: Doorball customer service guy. USELESS CUSTOMER SERVICE did not help Santa, did not get doorball, made Santa angry. NO PRESENTS.

    That’s him condemned to a rubbish Christmas 2026 and he only has himself to blame.

    The Quest for a Ringing Implement

    Dissatisfied and dangerous following the customer service incident, Santa began drinking sherry. Santa had a good long think about stuff that makes ringing noises. This is the list I came up with, with some help from a stoned Rudolph and the odd manic bray from Kenneth the gaffer walrus:

    • Bells
    • Electronics
    • Cymbals, gongs, triangles
    • GOOOoRRUUGHHhhhhhhhh
      • Santa requested further feedback on what Kenneth meant by that bray, will report back when he makes more sense later
    • Struck anvils, crystal glassware
    • Harps
    • Doorballs

    Santa got Markus, my head elf, on the case regarding the “GOOOoRRUUGHHhhhhhhhh” statement by Kenneth as I reckon he’s onto something there. Walruses know how to make a lot of noise, so perhaps it is in that slobbering oaf of a monster Santa can find a solution to this front door situation.

    “Sir, Kenneth doesn’t know what anything like that is, he makes those noises because he’s a walrus and that’s what they do on an animalistic front.” Said Markus.

    “NONSENSE, Markus. Do you want demoting!? Do you want Kenneth to take your place!?” I threatened the little bastard.

    “Well, I wouldn’t mind it for a…”

    “NONESENSE! You’re just jealous because Kenneth had a better idea than you. Study it! Study that statement! By the end of the day, I want a 10,000 word report on what GOOOoRRUUGHHhhhhhhhh is and how it can be used as a doorball implement. GET TO IT NOW, YOU SOB!” Santa then pelted the empty sherry bottle at the nearest wall and it shattered into a billion pieces.

    Markus’ Findings Regarding “GOOOoRRUUGHHhhhhhhhh”

    At the end of the day, Markus returned with a 9,145 word report on the statement. Santa immediately gave Markus, my head elf, a pay cut for not hitting the mandatory 10,000 words. The report itself was confusing because it had some big words in it Santa didn’t really understand, plus some statistics Santa didn’t really understand. So, Santa booted up my AI wife B2C AI Wife Production Centre Service Solution Platform Generator Ltd. and ran the report through her and had she condensed into the language of a 5 year old so I could understand it.

    “Darling! Markus, your head elf, has come to the conclusion (“the end”, a kind of decision) that the statement (“GOOOoRRUUGHHhhhhhhhh”) by Kenneth the gaffer walrus was the sound a walrus makes in an attempt to attract a mate, as it is mating season. I hope that makes sense, sweetums. 😘”

    BREAKTHROUGH! Santa duly had Kenneth the walrus replicate that GOOOoRRUUGHHhhhhhhhh noise, which I had Markus, my head elf, record on a recording device. The noise was the installed into a doorball, which Santa purchased from the shop in Bolton of Greater Manchester, which was flown in via helictoper, crash landed, exploded, and luckily the doorball survived. Double thumbs up! The sound effect was installed and we got on with our lives.

    Walrus-Based Anarchy

    After 24 hours of the new doorball being put to use (75 times from various product deliveries and 35 times for various Bolsheviks and communists whom were promptly tasered), something unexpected happened. Markus, my head elf, ran another report the next day, but it turns out the “GOOOoRRUUGHHhhhhhhhh” mating signal call that played out very loudly from the front door acted as a mating signal call across the North Pole.

    Santa got up one morning hungover to all hell to find 1,500 walruses outside the factory gates engaged in what can ONLY be classed as an orgy! The indecency made Santa vomit (or maybe that was the hangover).

    With walruses more or less as far as the eye could see, Santa hit the bottle with a vengeance. Then I called an emergency meeting in my Santa office.

    “Markus! Where the hell is Kenneth!? Why isn’t he at this meeting!?”

    “He’s engaged in the activities outside, sir.”

    “Oh, the depravity!” I bellowed.

    “Indeed, sir.” Markus squeaked.

    There was only one thing for it. Santa had Markus dig out the old water cannons from the basement of factory unit 6. We got the elves to head out back and blast the walruses with those, disseminating them in a chaotic and enraged frenzy. In the stampede that followed, the walruses pulverised through various factory walls, clobbered off factory implements, and triggered multiple fires (the new front doors and doorball also went up in a ball of flames). The elves used the water cannons to douse the flames, but this is a significant setback for Christmas 2026! Markus has calculated we have 2% of our production targets met.

    Worse was to follow.

    Kenneth has hit it off with a walrus broad and insisted through manic braying Santa hire her into the workforce. He wants to marry her and they want many walrus babies. Santa tried to say no, but Kenneth pulverised me into the floor and broke one of my Santa legs… this hassle wasn’t worth it, so I later got her to slobber over a contract of employment and deemed that as a valid signature.

    She’s called Linda. She’ll introduce herself in next week’s column. God help us.

  7. What To Watch On YouTube Right Now – Part 157

    Welcome back my readers, YouTube viewers and all others who followed this series of articles focused on YouTube videos worth watching.

    Have you been searching for something fun or interesting to watch on YouTube? Do you feel bored right now and you crave for something to see on the world’s most popular online video destination?

    I recommend you check out the following videos I found.

    #1 Popcorn in Bed’s X-Men movie reaction videos – I enjoy watching the movie reaction videos posted by Popcorn in Bed. For the most part, Cassie and her sister Carly (who joined her many times in reaction videos) are pretty reactive to the movies they saw for the first time ever regardless of genre. Recently, I replayed watching their reaction videos of the live-action, X-Men movies (the main ones specifically) from 2000’s X-Men to 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse. Each X-Men reaction video of theirs is fun to watch and I noticed how Cassy and Carly discovered who the characters are, familiarized themselves with them, and still succeeded on following the stories even though there were so many characters in each film. That said, I encourage you all to watch their videos below.

    #2 The Sherman Oaks Galleria today – You may not have visited the Sherman Oaks Galleria in California, but you might have seen it in films like Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Chopping Mall, Commando, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Indeed, the said shopping mall was used as a location in the movies and given the fact that a lot of shopping malls across America have closed down, revisiting the Sherman Oak Galleria’s legacy is both nostalgic and even educational. To find out what the Sherman Oaks Galleria looks like today, watch the video below. Tell me if you can recognize the malls spots that appeared in movies.

    #3 Magic Johnson’s 1996 Comeback as a Lakers Player – Looking back at the career of Magic Johnson, the 1990s was a series of drastic changes about him. He quickly retired in 1991 because he had Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) but returned as a player in the 1992 NBA All-Star Game and represented the United States as a Dream Team members in the Barcelona Olympics. He retired again in 1992 as controversy and protests grew from players over his plan to rejoin the Los Angeles Lakers for the 1992-93 season. He came back to the NBA as Lakers head coach in 1994 winning 5 games and losing 11, and eventually stepped down. In 1996, he came back as a player for the Lakers taking a new role as a power forward. Magic Johnson’s presence on the basketball courts looked exciting on face value but there was a lot of tension behind the scenes and even division among the Lakers. To discover what happened, watch the video below.

    #4 Eels to eat in Japan – I enjoy eating Unadon, the classic Japanese dish that has eel (unagi) grilled in the kabayaki way and served in a rice bowl. I had Unadon during my visits to Japan and in Japanese restaurants (both locally and overseas). Eels are truly popular in Japan. Even though supply constraints of live eels are felt by consumers and businesses, somehow the Japanese food joints found ways to secure enough of them and offer them to hungry customers in creative ways. #6 You, Me and the Movies react to Resident Evil: Degeneration – If you are a fan of the Resident Evil games and movies, do you really enjoy watching the computer-generated Resident Evil movies? Back in 2008, the pure-CGI movie Resident Evil: Degeneration was released in cinemas and there was some excitement for it among RE enthusiasts as it had fan-favorite characters Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield. Not only that, RE fans who were disappointed with the Milla Jovovich-led live-action movies wanted to see RE movies that were more connected with the games they enjoyed. You, Me and the Movies recently posted their reaction video about Resident Evil: Degeneration and it is a must-watch.

    #7 Deathmate and the 1990s comics revisited – As a long-time comic book reader, I personally witnessed the presence and impact of the Deathmate crossover comic books in 1993. The Deathmate comics published by Valiant were released on time while those from Image Comics really arrived late. Local comic book collectors near me had no excitement for Deathmate even though famous artists like Rob Liefeld, Jim Lee and Whilce Portacio participated in it in various degrees. The video below is very comprehensive with its focus on not just Deathmate but also the comic book speculator boom, the 1990s comics trends, the intrigue behind the scenes and more. Watch the video now.

  8. Python Tip #279 (of 365):

    Simplify your package's interface with __init__‍.py.

    Yesterday's tip noted that an empty __init__‍.py file is common and completely fine.

    But that file doesn't HAVE to be empty.

    Python's json module is actually a package, and its __init__‍.py file imports all the objects relevant to json module users:

    from .decoder import JSONDecoder, JSONDecodeError
    from .encoder import JSONEncoder

  9. Python Tip #278 (of 365):

    Always include a __init__‍.py file in your Python packages. Even an empty one.

    food_utils
    ├── fruits‍.py
    ├── __init__‍.py
    └── non_fruits‍.py

    A package is a directory that Python treats like a module.

    When you import the package, the module you get back IS the __init__‍.py file:

    >>> import food_utils
    >>> food_utils
    <module 'food_utils' from '/home/trey/food_utils/__init__‍.py'>

  11. ClingSTUN Linux Backdoor Abuses Public STUN Infrastructure

    A Linux malware strain named ClingSTUN exploits unpatched vulnerabilities in Internet-facing devices to establish persistent footholds and functions as a back-connect proxy backdoor. The campaign targets IoT devices through multiple CVEs including command injection and code execution flaws in various vendors' products. ClingSTUN abuses legitimate public STUN infrastructure to discover externally mapped IP addresses, maintain NAT bindings, and improve connectivity between compromised hosts and operators. The malware employs sophisticated persistence mechanisms, terminates watchdog timers, kills competitor processes, and disguises itself as the init process. It maintains remote command execution capabilities and includes self-propagation exploits for seven additional vulnerabilities. The threat actor evolved their approach across three distinct periods, adjusting initial access strategies and expanding the list of targeted vulnerabilities from single-vendor exploits to multi-vendor command injection attacks ...

  12. A STUNning Disguise: Cling Malware Masquerades as Google

    A sophisticated IoT botnet dubbed Cling has been discovered exploiting vulnerable internet-exposed devices through CVE-2021-35394 and other command-injection flaws. The malware distinguishes itself by abusing STUN protocol traffic and public STUN infrastructure for command-and-control communications, making malicious activity appear as legitimate NAT-traversal behavior. Cling propagates through multiple CVE exploits targeting routers, DVRs and embedded appliances, establishes persistence via init scripts and wget binary replacement, then communicates with operators through STUN-like exchanges with public servers. The botnet operator uses IP spoofing to make commands appear as if originating from Google's STUN infrastructure. Capabilities include propagation scanning, DDoS flooding, TCP tunneling and proxy relay functions. The malware supports various attack commands hidden within STUN transaction ID fields while maintaining a low detection profile by blending into legitimate application traffic from collab...

  14. Una Watch - SDK and Writing Your First App

    shkspr.mobi/blog/2026/10/una-w

    I don't know why hardware manufacturers find it so hard to write decent documentation. As I've said before you need to actually test your readme. The Una Watch development instructions are scattered across a bunch of different files.

    So here's how to go from zero to your first "Hello, World!" Glance app with the minimum of fuss.

    This all assumes a fairly modern Debian / Ubuntu / Pop OS Linux.

    Prerequisites

    This installs most of the tools you will need:

    sudo apt update
    sudo apt install -y git python3 python3-pip cmake build-essential

    STM32CubeCLT

    Visit https://www.st.com/en/development-tools/stm32cubeclt.html and download the Linux version of the tool. Inexplicably, you need to give your email address. I recommend giving a disposable one from https://10minutemail.com/

    After downloading, unzip the file.

    On the command line, cd into the directory containing the unzipped file.

    chmod +x stm32cubeclt_*.sh
    sudo ./stm32cubeclt_*.sh

    You will need to agree to their licence. Just hit y.

    That installs everything in /opt/st/stm32cubeclt_1.22.0/

    You will need to make that available to your PATH.

    export PATH="/opt/st/stm32cubeclt_1.22.0/GNU-tools-for-STM32/bin:$PATH"

    Clone the repo

    You will need to copy the Una SDK. I keep my git repos in ~/git/ - you will need the location of the directory later.

    cd ~/git/
    git clone [email protected]:UNAWatch/una-sdk.git
    cd una-sdk/
    git submodule update --init ThirdParty/lvgl

    Then update all the Python dependencies.

    export UNA_SDK="$PWD"
    python3 -m pip install --upgrade pip
    python3 -m pip install -r "$UNA_SDK/Utilities/Scripts/app_packer/requirements.txt"

    Check it has all worked

    Paste this into your terminal. Check for any errors.

    which arm-none-eabi-gcc || true
    which cmake || true
    which make || true
    which python3 || true
    python3 -m pip --version
    arm-none-eabi-gcc --version || true
    cmake --version || true
    make --version || true

    Build the demo app

    If all of the above has worked, you should be able to build the demo app with:

    cd /tmp
    mkdir -p MyAlarm
    cp -r "$UNA_SDK/Examples/Apps/Alarm/"* MyAlarm
    mkdir -p MyAlarm/build
    cmake -G "Unix Makefiles" -S MyAlarm/Software/Apps/Alarm-CMake -B MyAlarm/build
    cmake --build MyAlarm/build

    Make it permanent

    Store the paths permanently. If you put cloned the Una SDK to somewhere other than ~/git/ you'll need to edit this next bit of code:

    echo 'export UNA_SDK="$HOME/git/una-sdk"' >> ~/.bashrc
    echo 'export PATH="/opt/st/stm32cubeclt_1.22.0/GNU-tools-for-STM32/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.bashrc
    source ~/.bashrc

    Build a Glance app

    At the moment, the only way to build a GUI app is using the Windows only (Booooo!) TouchGFX0. So, instead, we'll make a "Hello World" glance. All it will do is draw some text.

    The GlanceFloors demo app is the simplest one to copy.

    cd $UNA_SDK/Examples/Apps/
    cp -r  GlanceFloors/ GlanceHello

    Use an IDE or a text editor to open up the new GlanceHello directory.

    • Rename the directory GlanceHello/Software/App/GlanceFloors-CMake/ to GlanceHello/Software/App/GlanceHello-CMake/
    • Edit the file GlanceHello/Software/App/GlanceFloors-CMake/CMakeLists.txt - specifically the # App configuration section.
    • Change the APP_NAME to GlanceHello
    • Change the APP_USER_NAME to Hello

    For a demo, you can leave the DEV_ID and APP_ID as their default values.

    Minimum viable app

    You will need to edit two more files.

    In GlanceHello/Software/Libs/Header/Service.hpp remove the following lines:

    SDK::Sensor::Connection mSensorFloors;
    uint32_t                mFloorsValue;
    bool                    mDataReceived;

    Then save the file.

    Edit GlanceHello/Software/Libs/Source/Service.cpp and replace its entire contents with this:

    #include "Service.hpp"
    #include "SDK/Messages/CommandMessages.hpp"
    #include "SDK/Messages/MessageGuard.hpp"

    Service::Service(SDK::Kernel &kernel)
        : mKernel(kernel)
        , mGlanceUI()
        , mGlanceTitle()
        , mGlanceValue()
    {}

    Service::~Service(){}

    void Service::run()
    {
        while (true) {
            SDK::MessageBase *msg;
            if(!mKernel.comm.getMessage(msg)) {
                continue;
            }

            switch (msg->getType()) {

                case SDK::MessageType::EVENT_GLANCE_START:
                    if (configGui()) {
                        createGuiControls();
                    } else {
                        mKernel.comm.releaseMessage(msg);
                        mKernel.sys.exit(0);
                    }
                    break;

                case SDK::MessageType::COMMAND_APP_STOP:
                case SDK::MessageType::EVENT_GLANCE_STOP:
                    mKernel.comm.releaseMessage(msg);
                    return;
                    break;

                case SDK::MessageType::EVENT_GLANCE_TICK:
                    onGlanceTick();
                    break;

                default:

    Save the file.

    Compile it

    On the command line

    cd $UNA_SDK/Examples/Apps/GlanceHello/Software/App/GlanceHello-CMake
    cmake -G "Unix Makefiles" -S . -B build
    cmake --build build

    It should finish with a success message of [100%] Built target GlanceHelloApp

    Copying it to your watch

    • Plug your watch into your computer with a USB-C cable.
    • On your computer, open the watch's filesystem.
    • Open the Apps directory.
    • Create a new directory.
    • Name the new directory with the string of characters from the APP_ID which is set in CMakeLists.txt
    • The app is stored in GlanceHello/Output/ and will be called Hello_1.5.0-rc5.uapp or similar.
    • Copy the .uapp file from your computer to the directory you just created on the watch.
    • Eject the watch.
    • Unplug the cable.
    • Restart the watch by pressing the "Up" button until you get to "Power Off", then press "Select", then press "Select" again.
    • Turn the watch on by holding down "Select".
    • Once the watch has fully restarted, press the "Down" button until you see the "Hello" glance.

    If it has worked, you should see this:

  15. In _Anatomy of LISP_, John Allen introduces continuations in Chapter 4, Imperative Constructs in LISP, section 4.7, `eval’ with Explicit Control.
    This helped me a lot to understand continuations back when I first read that book.

    He writes:
    «We now propose to explicitly *pass along* information about what to do after the current computation is completed.
    This information is called the *continuation*.»

    In the implementation shown, a continuation is a function supplied as the sole parameter `c’ of function `ceval’, the evaluator; `c’ is also a non-local variable in auxiliary function `ev1’.
    The whole evaluation algorithm works with a tad of higher-order mutually recursive wizardry.

    Note: the bibliography includes two items related to the handling of non-local variables in the latter, though the book doesn't have explicit references to the first one.

    This book was published in 1978.
    The algorithms in it are presented in the language of M-expressions (in my view, it is a purely algorithmic language, as distinct from a programming language).
    Drawing a weak analogy, to me the exposition evokes texts on differential and integral calculus from the age of Leibniz, Newton, and Euler, before the transformations by Cauchy, Weierstrass, and others.

  21. I can tell you where automation stops in IT ops, security, and compliance, because I have watched it stop there. The general theory of what AI cannot do is the least reliable genre in tech writing. Everyone extrapolates from one domain into four they do not know.

  22. clever library name that I still have no idea what's in it:

  23. With the coming weekend having a holiday Monday in it, I will be livetooting The Bat on Sunday at the usual #Monsterdon time.

    It’s a month of Vincent Price this year, with the first 2 films from the years before he began doubling down on horror. Price, an accomplished character actor, had not managed to land a lot of leading roles despite looking right fit and having a debonair accent. Around 1959 he was adjacent to murder, mystery, and adventure.

    The niche he carved in monster movies is long, deep, and presumably kept the bills paid.

  24. #WritersCoffeeClub #WCC 2026.10.04 — How isolated are your characters in your current WIP?

    Of all my characters, only the devil-girl is self-aware enough to realize she is isolated in her head—as she would point out are all people—that it is impossible to more than simulate the existence of "other" that is not oneself, that she can't prove that she isn't the only one in the universe. This is one of the reasons, perhaps, she accepts loneliness so readily, and living and studying in solitude. Nevertheless, she chooses to fill the void with people, despite her complaining and grousing about never being left alone to read and to study and to practice her tricks. She feels the best of her is that part that responds to the needs of others, for which she has trained and educated herself so diligently. In it, in her isolation, she finds purpose—and though she'd not admit that to anyone—joy. It's why she's able to commit to doing things that help those she feels responsible for—even to the point that it kills her (she's nearly died several times). In her worldview, she's not convinced death will change anything; instead, it will be the last thing she learns.

  27. Lol you know I'm a little more suspicious of American technology having something embedded in it, because you know they don't so often. Can you really trust Google Facebook x lol.
