  3. Ranked: U.S. States With the Highest Vehicle-Theft Rates in 2025

California recorded the highest vehicle-theft rate in the United States in 2025, while North Carolina ranked No. 15 nationally, according to an analysis of data from the National Insurance Crime Bureau and U.S. Census Bureau.

The ranking measures reported vehicle thefts per 100,000 residents, allowing states with different population sizes to be compared more fairly. More than 650,000 vehicles were reportedly stolen nationwide during the year—approximately one vehicle every 48 seconds.

States With the Highest Vehicle-Theft Rates

    1. California: 348 thefts per 100,000 residents
    2. Nevada: 318
    3. New Mexico: 318
    4. Missouri: 280
    5. Colorado: 280
    6. Maryland: 273
    7. Texas: 240
    8. Alaska: 232
    9. Washington: 228
    10. Illinois: 223
    11. Oregon: 208
    12. Kansas: 201
    13. Tennessee: 188
    14. Louisiana: 188
    15. North Carolina: 185
    16. South Carolina: 184
    17. Ohio: 174

    California Leads the Nation

California recorded an estimated 348 vehicle thefts per 100,000 residents—the highest rate in the country.

Nevada and New Mexico tied for second place at 318 thefts per 100,000 people. Missouri and Colorado also tied, with each reporting a rate of 280.

The results show that elevated vehicle-theft rates are not limited to one region. States near the top of the list are spread across the West, Southwest, Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and South.

    North Carolina Ranks No. 15

North Carolina recorded approximately 185 vehicle thefts per 100,000 residents, placing it 15th among the states included in the ranking.

The state’s rate was slightly higher than neighboring South Carolina, which ranked No. 16 with 184 thefts per 100,000 people.

North Carolina also ranked just below Tennessee and Louisiana. Both states recorded rates of 188 thefts per 100,000 residents.

The statewide number should not be interpreted as Raleigh’s individual vehicle-theft rate. Conditions can vary considerably among cities, counties and neighborhoods.

    How North Carolina Compares

    North Carolina’s rate was:

    • 163 thefts per 100,000 people lower than California’s.
    • 133 lower than Nevada and New Mexico.
    • Three lower than Tennessee and Louisiana.
    • One higher than South Carolina.
    • 11 higher than Ohio.

Among the southeastern states displayed on the accompanying map, Tennessee and Louisiana had higher rates than North Carolina. South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Kentucky, Alabama and Florida recorded lower statewide rates.

Why Rates Are Used Instead of Totals

A state with a large population will generally record more crimes than a less-populated state, even when individual risk is lower.

A rate per 100,000 residents adjusts for population size. It provides a clearer way to compare the relative frequency of vehicle theft among states, although it does not measure an individual driver’s exact risk.

Vehicle ownership levels, urban density, law-enforcement reporting practices and local crime patterns may also affect comparisons.

    Ways to Reduce Vehicle-Theft Risk

Drivers cannot eliminate every risk, but several basic precautions can make a vehicle less attractive or accessible to thieves:

    • Lock the vehicle and close every window.
    • Never leave keys or key fobs inside.
    • Avoid leaving a running vehicle unattended.
    • Park in visible, well-lit locations.
    • Remove bags, electronics and valuables from view.
    • Use a steering-wheel lock or other visible deterrent.
    • Activate the factory alarm and immobilizer.
    • Consider a tracking device or connected-vehicle service.
    • Store the vehicle identification number and current photographs somewhere secure.
    • Report a stolen vehicle immediately to law enforcement and the insurance provider.

Owners should also check whether their vehicle has an outstanding security-related recall or manufacturer software update.

    What Raleigh Drivers Should Know

The national ranking provides useful context, but Raleigh residents should rely on local police data for neighborhood-level trends.

When parking downtown or attending a major event, drivers should remove visible valuables, confirm that all doors are locked and note where the vehicle was left. Anyone who discovers a stolen vehicle should contact law enforcement rather than attempting to recover it independently.

The rankings were calculated using 2025 state vehicle-theft totals and U.S. Census Bureau population estimates. Rates shown in the graphic are rounded.

  20. What’s New at Crabtree Valley Mall? Stores Opening, Closing and Relocating

Crabtree Valley Mall is continuing its transformation with a new round of store openings, restaurant additions, relocations and closures.

The latest changes include the arrival of popular national brands, new dining options and entertainment concepts. The activity comes as the Raleigh shopping center undergoes a major refresh under owner Macerich, which purchased the property for $290 million in 2025 and announced plans to invest approximately $60 million in improvements.

Here is what shoppers should know about the latest changes at Crabtree Valley Mall.

New Stores Now Open at Crabtree

    POP MART

POP MART has opened its first North Carolina store on the mall’s lower level. The global retailer specializes in collectible designer toys, blind boxes and popular characters such as Labubu, Molly, SKULLPANDA and Dimoo.

The Raleigh opening gives Triangle collectors a dedicated destination for POP MART releases and exclusive merchandise.

    Timberland

Timberland is another recent addition to Crabtree. The retailer offers boots, shoes, apparel and outdoor-inspired accessories known for durability and rugged style.

    Five Guys

Five Guys Burgers & Fries is now open in the mall’s second-level food court. The restaurant serves customizable burgers, hot dogs, hand-cut fries and milkshakes.

Five Guys replaced the former McDonald’s location, giving shoppers a new fast-casual dining option.

    Stores and Attractions Coming Soon

    BoxLunch

BoxLunch is preparing to open on the first level near Belk. The specialty retailer carries apparel, accessories, collectibles and gifts inspired by Disney, Marvel, Harry Potter, anime and other entertainment franchises.

The company also supports hunger-relief efforts through its partnership with Feeding America.

    JD Sports

Sneaker and sportswear retailer JD Sports is listed as coming soon to the mall’s first level. Shoppers can expect footwear, clothing and accessories from brands including Nike, Adidas, Jordan, Champion, Vans and The North Face.

    Fogo de Chão

Brazilian steakhouse Fogo de Chão is coming to Crabtree, adding another full-service restaurant to the mall’s dining lineup.

The restaurant is best known for churrasco-style meats roasted over an open flame and served tableside, along with its Market Table featuring salads, vegetables and specialty dishes.

    Level99

Level99 plans to bring an interactive social-gaming experience to Crabtree Valley Mall. The entertainment concept features more than 50 physical and mental challenges, along with food and craft drinks.

The attraction is expected to give visitors another reason to spend time at Crabtree beyond traditional shopping.

Additional Businesses Are Moving or Changing Locations

Hi Level Fashion temporarily closed while preparing to relocate to another space inside the mall. Crabtree’s directory also lists several businesses as under construction, coming soon or operating from temporary locations as leasing and renovation work continues.

These moves are part of a broader reshuffling involving approximately 12 businesses across the shopping center. Visitors may notice temporary storefronts, construction barriers and directory changes during the transition.

    McDonald’s Closes at Crabtree

The mall’s longtime McDonald’s food-court location has closed. Five Guys has taken over the space, bringing its signature burgers, fries and shakes to the second level.

The closure reflects Crabtree’s evolving restaurant mix as management adds new dining brands to the property.

    A Major Makeover Is Underway

Crabtree Valley Mall remains one of the Triangle’s largest shopping destinations, with more than 200 stores and restaurants. Its current lineup includes Apple, Macy’s, Belk, LEGO, Coach, H&M, Michael Kors, The Cheesecake Factory and P.F. Chang’s.

The ongoing investment is expected to modernize the property, improve common areas and attract additional retailers, restaurants and entertainment concepts.

Because opening dates and store locations can change, shoppers should consult the official Crabtree directory before visiting.

Crabtree Valley Mall is located at 4325 Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh.

  23. Important North Carolina History Moments That Happened in August

August has played a significant role in North Carolina’s history, marking milestones in aviation, civil rights, politics, education and military history. From the birth of one of the nation’s first public universities to the Wright brothers’ groundbreaking flights on the Outer Banks, these events helped shape both North Carolina and the United States.

Here are some of the most important North Carolina history dates to remember in August.

    August 1, 1960: Greensboro Woolworth Sit-In Continues

Although the Greensboro sit-ins began on February 1, 1960, August marked six months of sustained demonstrations that helped transform the Civil Rights Movement.

The nonviolent protests led by four North Carolina A&T students inspired similar sit-ins across the country and helped bring an end to segregated lunch counters.

    Location: Greensboro

August 2, 1776: North Carolina Delegates Sign the Declaration of Independence

North Carolina delegates William Hooper, Joseph Hewes and John Penn signed the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia during August 1776.

Their signatures represented North Carolina’s commitment to American independence.

August 17, 1903: The Wright Brothers Arrive in Kitty Hawk for Their Final Flying Season

Wilbur and Orville Wright returned to the Outer Banks in August 1903 to prepare for the experiments that would culminate in the world’s first successful powered flight on December 17, 1903.

Their work at Kitty Hawk forever connected North Carolina with the history of aviation.

    Location: Kitty Hawk

August 21, 1831: Nat Turner’s Rebellion Impacts North Carolina

Although the rebellion occurred in neighboring Virginia, its aftermath dramatically affected North Carolina.

State lawmakers adopted stricter laws governing enslaved and free Black residents, influencing North Carolina’s legal and political landscape for decades.

August 25, 1789: The University of North Carolina Is Chartered

The North Carolina General Assembly chartered the University of North Carolina on August 25, 1789.

UNC became the first public university in the United States to open its doors and graduate students under a single state charter.

    Location: Chapel Hill

August 27, 1963: North Carolinians Prepare for the March on Washington

Civil rights leaders, clergy, students and community members from across North Carolina traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate in the historic March on Washington on August 28.

Many participants came from Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, Charlotte and other communities throughout the state.

August 30, 1954: Hurricane Hazel Preparations Begin

As Hurricane Hazel approached the Atlantic coast later that fall, August marked the height of hurricane preparedness season in North Carolina.

The month serves as an annual reminder for residents to review emergency plans before the peak of hurricane season.

Why August Matters in North Carolina History

August reflects the diversity of North Carolina’s history—from colonial government and higher education to aviation, civil rights and public service.

Many of these anniversaries are commemorated through museums, state historic sites and educational programs across North Carolina.

  24. Important American History Moments That Happened in August

African American history is American history, and August includes several major turning points in the nation’s political, cultural, labor and civil-rights story.

From the arrival of Africans at Point Comfort in 1619 to the March on Washington in 1963, the month includes moments of achievement, resistance, tragedy and transformation. August also marks the anniversaries of the Voting Rights Act, Thurgood Marshall’s Supreme Court confirmation and the birth of the nation’s first African American president.

Here are some of the most important African American history dates to remember in August.

August 4, 1961: Barack Obama Was Born

Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 4, 1961. He became the 44th president of the United States and the first African American to hold the nation’s highest office when he was inaugurated in January 2009.

Obama served two terms as president, from 2009 to 2017. His election represented a historic milestone nearly 150 years after the abolition of slavery and more than four decades after the Voting Rights Act became law.

Learn more from the Obama White House Archives.

August 6, 1965: The Voting Rights Act Was Signed

President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law on August 6, 1965.

The landmark legislation prohibited racially discriminatory voting practices, including literacy tests used to prevent Black citizens from registering to vote. It also authorized federal intervention in jurisdictions with documented histories of discrimination.

The law followed years of organizing and sacrifice by civil-rights activists, including the voting-rights campaign and marches in Selma, Alabama.

Read the Voting Rights Act at the National Archives.

August 9, 1936: Jesse Owens Won His Fourth Olympic Gold Medal

Jesse Owens won his fourth gold medal at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin as a member of the United States 4-by-100-meter relay team.

Owens also earned gold medals in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and long jump. His achievements challenged Nazi Germany’s claims of Aryan racial superiority and established him as one of the most accomplished athletes in Olympic history.

Owens returned to a segregated United States, where he continued to face racial discrimination despite his international success.

August 17, 1887: Marcus Garvey Was Born

Marcus Mosiah Garvey was born in Jamaica on August 17, 1887.

Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and became one of the early 20th century’s most influential advocates for Black nationalism, Pan-Africanism and economic independence.

His movement encouraged people of African descent around the world to take pride in their heritage, build Black-owned institutions and pursue political and economic self-determination.

August 18, 1920: The 19th Amendment Was Ratified

The 19th Amendment was ratified on August 18, 1920, prohibiting the federal government and states from denying voting rights based on sex.

Although the amendment represented an important victory, it did not guarantee equal access to the ballot for all women. Black women, particularly those living in the South, continued to confront poll taxes, literacy tests, intimidation, violence and other discriminatory barriers.

Black women remained central to the continuing struggle for voting rights, which eventually helped produce the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Explore the 19th Amendment through the National Archives.

August 20, 1619: Africans Arrived at Point Comfort

The arrival of Africans at Point Comfort in the English colony of Virginia is traditionally commemorated on August 20.

Approximately 20 Africans were brought to Virginia aboard the English privateer White Lion in late August 1619. The event became an important moment in the development of racialized slavery in English North America.

The date should be understood within a broader history. Africans were present in other parts of the Americas and North America before 1619, and historians continue to examine the status and experiences of the Africans who arrived in Virginia.

    August 21, 1831: Nat Turner’s Rebellion Began

Nat Turner and a group of enslaved people began an uprising in Southampton County, Virginia, on August 21, 1831.

Turner, an enslaved preacher, believed he had been called to lead people out of slavery. The rebellion became one of the most consequential uprisings by enslaved people in United States history.

Authorities responded with executions and widespread violence against Black residents. Southern lawmakers also imposed more restrictive laws designed to control the movement, education and religious activities of enslaved and free Black people.

Learn more from the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

August 25, 1925: The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters Was Organized

The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters was organized in 1925 under the leadership of A. Philip Randolph.

Pullman porters performed demanding work while facing low wages, long hours and racial discrimination. Their union became a pioneering force in the Black labor movement and eventually secured a landmark collective-bargaining agreement.

The Brotherhood’s organizing helped connect economic justice, workers’ rights and the emerging civil-rights movement.

Explore the history of the Pullman porters through the National Park Service.

    August 27, 1963: W.E.B. Du Bois Died

Scholar, author and civil-rights leader W.E.B. Du Bois died in Ghana on August 27, 1963, one day before the March on Washington.

Du Bois was a co-founder of the NAACP and an influential advocate for civil rights, higher education and Pan-African unity. His writings examined race, democracy, economics and the experiences of Black Americans.

His death came as a new generation of activists prepared to gather in Washington to demand jobs, equality and freedom.

August 28, 1955: Emmett Till Was Murdered

Emmett Till, a 14-year-old Black teenager from Chicago, was abducted and murdered while visiting relatives in Mississippi on August 28, 1955.

His mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, made the courageous decision to hold an open-casket funeral. Images showing the brutality inflicted on her son were published by Black media outlets and seen around the world.

Till’s murder and the acquittal of the two white men charged with the crime helped galvanize a new generation of civil-rights activists.

Read Emmett Till’s story from the Smithsonian.

August 28, 1963: The March on Washington Took Place

Approximately 250,000 people gathered in Washington, D.C., for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963.

The demonstration brought national attention to employment discrimination, segregation, voting rights and the need for comprehensive civil-rights legislation. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his historic “I Have a Dream” speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

The march became one of the defining events of the Civil Rights Movement and helped build momentum for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Explore the March on Washington through the National Park Service.

August 30, 1967: Thurgood Marshall Was Confirmed to the Supreme Court

The United States Senate confirmed Thurgood Marshall as an associate justice of the Supreme Court on August 30, 1967.

Marshall became the first African American to serve on the nation’s highest court. Before joining the Supreme Court, he was a leading civil-rights attorney who successfully argued Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark case that declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional.

Marshall served on the Supreme Court from 1967 until 1991.

    View the Senate’s historical record.

Why August 28 Is Especially Important in Black History

August 28 stands out as an exceptionally consequential date in African American history.

Emmett Till was murdered on August 28, 1955. Eight years later, the March on Washington brought approximately 250,000 people to the nation’s capital. W.E.B. Du Bois had died in Ghana just one day before the march.

The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture has highlighted August 28 because of the number of major events connected to Black history that have occurred on that date.

Keep Learning About African American History

These anniversaries provide opportunities to learn about the people and movements that transformed the United States. They also remind us that progress resulted from sustained organizing, courage, creativity and sacrifice.

Raleigh residents can continue exploring African American history through local museums, historic sites, libraries, archives and community organizations throughout the year.

    Why National Night Out Matters

These gatherings can also make it easier for residents to share concerns, learn about crime-prevention resources and become more involved in their communities.

The Tarboro Road Community Center celebration is one of the ways Raleigh residents can participate locally in this nationwide initiative.
