  42. Finding Food in Northeast Louisiana

If you or somebody you know is struggling or will be struggling with having enough food due to not receiving November SNAP benefits (or any reason), I’mma list some Northeast Louisiana resources. Hit me up if you need help. This is the kinda stuff I (and the people and programs I coordinate with) have to do all the time for clients anyway. As I become aware of other resources, I will try to add them.

This also includes some ideas and calls to action for people, organizations, and businesses because people struggling to have access to enough food anywhere (Louisiana, USA, Sudan, Congo, Palestine, etc.) will always be a policy failure and misuse of power as long as it happens.

    Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana

They have distribution sites/pantries open different days/times in different towns/cities including: Monroe, West Monroe, Richwood, Calhoun, Ruston, Grambling, Jonesboro, East Hodge, Quitman, Chatham, Columbia, Tallulah, Lake Providence, Oak Grove, Epps, Marion, Bernice, Winnsboro, Wisner, Bastrop, Mer Rouge, Rayville, St. Joseph, Waterproof, Newellton.

1st come, 1st serve basis. They will be more strained by this SNAP situation. You will need to bring ID, a utility bill, and be under the income limit for your family size.

Go to Foodbanknela.org to find out more including where distribution sites are and when they distribute. Their main number is (318) 322-3567. The page to search for pantries is foodbanknela.org/find-support/find-food-now/ and I find it works best when you put a zip code in the search rather than the city/town. So, instead of putting in “Bastrop” in the location box, put “71220” and select the Morehouse Parish checkbox.

    Councils on Aging

Councils on Aging provide various services and activities for seniors in their parishes including congregate meals served on site and home-delivered meals/Meals on Wheels for seniors who are not physically able to go to the program.

    Mom’s Meals

This program ships pre-packaged meals to the home. My experience of having clients getting Mom’s Meals is they receive a big box of a variety of frozen meals that can be thawed/microwaved. They can be tailored to certain medical or dietary needs such as diabetic friendly meals, heart friendly, low sodium, high protein, halal, kosher, etc.

From their site momsmeals.com : “You may qualify for FREE Mom’s Meals if you are…

    • Over age 65
    • Disabled
    • Require assistance with grocery shopping and/or preparing meals
    • On a Medicaid plan that offers a paid meal benefit
    • On a Medicare Advantage plan that offers a paid meal benefit”

This includes Medicaid behavioral health plans. From my experience with the Medicaid plans, Amerihealth Caritas Louisiana (ACLA) community plan offers a meal benefit and United Healthcare does not. I’ll have to look into the other four Medicaid community health plans (Healthy Blue, Louisiana Healthcare Connections, Humana, and Aetna Better Health) because I can’t remember if they have contracts with Mom’s Meals or not.

    Gardeners

Any northeast Louisiana gardeners willing to share their harvest with neighbors in need, make yourself known. I know we’re shifting out of the the warmer time of year when a lot of the growing is done, but maybe you’ve got some shelf stable things like black-eyed peas. Maybe you have extras from your harvest stored in the freezer. Maybe you pickled or preserved some things. Maybe you have some late-harvested veggies or some frost-tolerant crops that are going. Maybe you have a weird situation like I had a couple years ago when my cherry tomatoes started producing late and were still going into late fall while it was cold outside. Every little bit helps.

I have some extra bags of frozen red okra myself. And I gave away as many cartons of cherry tomatoes from my garden as I could this summer.

Restaurants, markets, money people, people in general

Help your neighbors out. Free ideas: Give out free meals or gift cards if you can, as much as you can. Sponsor days of free meals at restaurants.

Can you cook? Many of our neighbors either have disabilities, time constraints, or lack the skills to prepare many foods. They might get food from a pantry or elsewhere and not be able to prepare it themselves. Offer your time and your skills to help them prepare food.

Here’s the part where I’m especially talking to you, money people. You know who you are. You’re on the boards of things, you own or run corporations, maybe your name is on buildings, and the property value in your neighborhood is higher than other places in your town/parish. You may have never used a food stamp or EBT card in your life. You are not one missed paycheck or Social Security check away from “How am I going to keep the lights on? How am I going to pay the rent? How am I going to afford my medicine?”

Don’t look at feeding your community members as a feel-good donation or volunteer thing to help the “less fortunate” and make you appreciate your blessings all the more. It ain’t that. It’s a bare minimum community thing. People gotta eat to survive. Every day. It’s a necessity.

Make sure your neighbors are fed. The goal is everybody eats.

And long-term: get behind people and policy that are trying to move us toward everybody eating instead of people and policy keeping it so many people are struggling and starving while others live high on the hog. Get behind people and policy that show they actually want people who are alive to stay alive and flourish. The Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana has an advocacy page on their website for a reason. That page says “Putting a stop to hunger takes more than just food” and they’re “turning awareness into action and advocating for strong public policy that supports hunger-relief programs.”

The goal is everybody eats. Everybody. Let’s do community, y’all.
