  4. Residential Urbanity Brings Triangle Skate Photography to Downtown Raleigh

    Downtown Raleigh’s First Friday for February spotlights skate culture and visual storytelling with Residential Urbanity, a modern showcase of Triangle skate photographers presented in partnership with the City of Raleigh Museum and the Downtown Raleigh Alliance.

    The exhibition highlights the people, places, and moments that shape skateboarding across the Triangle—captured through photography that documents movement, community, and the evolving urban landscape.

    Three Photographers, One Community Story

    Residential Urbanity features selected works and personal backstories from three local photographers whose images go beyond action shots to reflect culture and connection:

    Each artist shares favorite photographs from recent years, offering insight into the environments and communities that influence their work.

    Live Q&A and First Friday Energy

    Beginning at 6:00 PM, attendees will experience a live Q&A hosted by Miguel Magallanes of Endless Grind. The conversation explores creative process, skate culture in the Triangle, and the role photography plays in preserving local stories.

    Friends of the City of Raleigh Museum will be on site selling drinks, adding to the social atmosphere that defines First Friday downtown.

  24. Joy Cometh in the Morning: An African American Symposium

    Hey there! This Black History Month, the Dr. M.T. Pope House and City of Raleigh Museum are teaming up to celebrate African American Emancipation through education, business ownership, and civic engagement. We’ve got an exciting lineup of academic presentations and music lined up for you. Starting at 10 a.m., Dr. Brandi C. Brimmer will be discussing “Claiming Union Widowhood: Race, Respectability, and Poverty in the Post-Emancipation South.” Then, from 11 a.m. to noon, Marie Stark will take you on a journey through “Freedom Through Education: A Look at Shaw University’s Early Years.” Finally, from 1-2 p.m., Shenette Swann will be leading an audience-interactive musical performance. This program is generously supported by North Carolina Humanities, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. You can join us at the City of Raleigh Museum on Saturday, February 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s free and open to anyone aged 15 and up, so come on down and enjoy the festivities!

After the Civil War, formally enslaved African Americans rejoiced in their newfound freedom, but they understood that there was still work to be done. “Joy Cometh in the Morning” explores how African Americans embraced their freedom. Many expressed their liberation through music, while others began to assert their rights as citizens. This year’s topics will include the history of Shaw University’s Leonard Medical School, one of the first four-year medical institutions in the United States. Additionally, there will be a focus on Black women in widowhood and their experiences navigating the government to collect widows’ pensions. Finally, there will be an interactive performance highlighting the unrelenting joy of African Americans.
