This has to be my favorite episode of "Fall of Civilizations" thus far. The way Paul Cooper tells this story, the sheer amount of detail in an already very sparse part of history is just astounding. I'm really impressed and highly recommend this to people interested in ancient history.
The massacre at the end and what led to it made me feel quite sad about Carthage. We often forget that civilizations are temporary. So much has been repeated over time when one looks at history. I think nothing that is happening today seems that much different from before.

Arcee AI released Trinity-Large-Thinking, a 400B parameter open-source reasoning model that scores within 2 points of Claude Opus on PinchBench while costing 96% less at $0.90 per million tokens. Uses sparse architecture activating only 13B parameters per token. Trained for $20M by 30-person team. #OpenSource #AI #ReasoningModels

Random #Debian Astro package of the week is libsopt-dev. SOPT is a C package to perform Sparse OPTimisation. It solves a variety of sparse regularisation problems, including the SARA algorithm.
SOPT is largely provided to support the PURIFY package, a companion open-source code to perform radio interferometric imaging, also written by the authors of SOPT.
This package contains the development files.

Went to Royal Mile to take #Fringe pics, but between poor light quality for taking photos, and remarkably few performers doing their thing, I didn't take many. Very sparse compared to pre-Covid Fringe on the Mile.

Test: #lilygo #tbeam + #tbat + solar panel. 2 batteries: 1 in T-bat & 1 in T-beam. How long will this run for when sunshine is sparse? Will having 2 batteries help it last longer (panel output directly into T-beam lasted only 1 week). Why test? Can one use this as place & forget #solarnode? When T-beam battery runs out it needs a manual restart (bad for place & forget), but it can restart if gets clean 5V USB. Will T-bat solar-charge & make flat T-beam restart after it shut down? #meshtastic

For once I did not spend much time on biological networks (maybe inadvisable at a course whose subtitle contains the words "network modeling"), but instead presented SMuGLasso, a sparse multitask group lasso for GWAS in diverse populations that we developed with Asma Nouira and that was published just last week. https://journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol/article?id=10.1371/journal.pcbi.1012734
SMuGlasso groups SNPs by LD blocks (as done by Alia Dehman, Christophe Ambroise and Pierre Neuvial in 2015), and treats genetically homogeneous subpopulations of a heterogeneous data set as different but interlinked tasks. An additional sparsity constraints allows us to identify population-specific loci.
On simulations, we show that SMuGLasso has much better recall than classical GWAS (at the expense of more false positives, but fewer than other comparison partners).
On real data, we observe that SMuGLasso recovers all the genes identified by a classical GWAS, as well as some that were identified by a meta-GWAS that included our dataset. All in all, only 2 of the 27 identified genes look likely to be false positives.

I know a lot of #Australians are proud of their #Scottish origins but this is taking it a bit far!
More seriously, this is a coverage map - showing #GEDI coverage is a bit sparse. The lighter blues are ~100 samples per km, dropping to black=0 samples.

I made another #ErgoMechKeyboard, taking the ribbon cable idea for my Bivouac34, and the 32-key layout and a 5-way navigation button from my Bivvy16D #SplitKeyboard. Code at work is stored in #SVN, with a highly irregular structure - no standard trunk/tags/branches, a lot of externals, a bespoke tool to do sparse checkouts. Nobody I spoke about it to likes it, but apparently it's just too entrenched into various workflows to easily migrate away from.
A lot of devs prefer #git over svn though. But because of the weird repo structure, they can't just use
git svn. So the next best thing they (and I) came to is to just put it all in a local git repo - including the.svnfolder. This adds a lot of overhead, sure, but it's the simplest way to get the amenities you're used to.I came a little bit further, though. I have tried to write a script that would import a (subset of) svn history into this local git repo - by essentially parsing
svn log --xml, then doingsvn up && git commiton every revision, setting up authors, dates and messages nicely. It is slow, of course, but I ran it overnight. Feeling quite proud of myself now, being able to, e.g. usegit blamefully locally.Probably won't share the script here though, since it's tied to our specific repo quirks.

New #review today: "#Evolución is a Chilean band that has been around since the early 80s, though their recorded output is sparse; Secretos is a live album recorded in 2006-2007 and released in 2021. While I can’t fault the players for their technique, the music is instrumental fusion-oriented rock somewhat on the generic side." #ExposeOnline #MylodonRecords #JazzRock #ProgressiveRock #fusion http://expose.org/index.php/articles/display/evolucion-secretos-2.html

Very nice new gadget, the #PicoCalc by #ClockworkPi! 🤩 Got mine a few days ago and am currently learning a lot about how it works. Documentation is a bit sparse, currently. You have to study many forum posts on forum.clockworkpi.com, there's currently no "gettings started" guide. – A bit disappointing: No Python (neither Micro-, nor Circuit-) out of the box. But folks (not ClockworkPi) are working on it. – If you're into Forth: it's already there. #RaspberryPi #Pico #Pico2 #MMBasic

#macOS #Tahoe brings a new #disk #image format
Disk images have been valuable tools marred by poor performance. In the wrong circumstances, an encrypted sparse image (#UDSP) stored on the blazingly fast internal #SSD of an #Apple silicon #Mac may write files no faster than 100 MB/s, typical for a cheap hard drive. One of the important new features introduced in macOS 26 Tahoe is a new disk image format that can achieve near-native speeds: #ASIF

Random #Debian Astro package of the week is python3-pymoc. PyMOC provides a Python compatible library for handling MOCs.
Frequently astronomical survey catalogues or images are sparse and cover only a small part of the sky. In a Multi-Order Coverage map the extent of data in a particular dataset is cached as a pre-calculated mask image. The hierarchical nature enables fast boolean operations in image space,

So a #gardening question. I have a lot of privet hedge in the place I moved into. One part of the hedge is very sparse and another has been overtaken from within by thick cotoneaster. Cut the cotoneaster out or just make it part of the hedging?
Plant new privet in the sparse section?
