  1. @AAMfP try disabling or even removing (the keycaps or even switches for) a few rows/columns now to test out the potential smaller layout and if you can stand it or not? Personally I’m on 30 keys now… #ErgoMechKeyboard #MechanicalKeyboard

  2. Good programmable keyboard blog post from Gregor medium.com/grafana-labs/the-se

"I built a keyboard whose keys finish my words. Here’s the rabbit hole that taught me to build one, and how you can start building your own.

    ...

One rabbit hole I’ll happily signpost and not go down: designing and 3D-printing your own board. That’s a different madness, and this story is long enough".

That'd be me and #ErgoMechKeyboard design I guess, but of course I tinker with my #KeyboardLayout too 🕳️🐇

  3. So I've counted. I now have 29 Plum Blossom, 3 Cherry Blossom and 53 Sunset switches. I also have two MBK Glow (one black, one white) keycap sets and an extra white KLP Lamé PBT cap set but I only have two Corne PCBs and cases that both have a full compliment of Plum/Cherry Blossom switches and KLP Lamé caps already. What to do. What to do. #ErgoMechKeyboard #MechanicalKeyboard

  4. Thinking I might like to buy a new keyboard, so I thought I'd be smart and just buy new keycaps (KLP Lamé) as it was cheaper. Now I have enough spare switches and a spare set of keycaps for another keyboard, I just need boards and cases. 🤦

  5. Good news: Even though [I thought] my new #ErgoMechKeyboard design uses 16mm vertical spacing, both my Choc v1 Chicago Stenographer #keycaps and my (preferred) Choc v1 KLP Lamé saddle (#3DPrinted at JLCPLC in resin) work just fine. I was worried I'd not be able to use this new #MechanicalKeyboard without ordering some even more niche minimal-y spaced keycaps. l'll get some matching 1.5u wide caps done at some point...

Bad news: Broke the stem of yet another doing the swap - these things are fragile! Push from below, don't pull!

  6. I made another #ErgoMechKeyboard, taking the ribbon cable idea for my Bivouac34, and the 32-key layout and a 5-way navigation button from my Bivvy16D #SplitKeyboard. This is my Goldilocks32 #MechanicalKeyboard - another diode-free design with a #GraphTheory based sparse scanning matrix astrobeano.blogspot.com/2026/0

  7. That’s two superficially very similar DIY #ErgoMechKeyboard prototypes on my desk right now, in green with KLP Lamé keycaps, and in red with Chicago Stenographer keycaps.

Both sets of #MechanicalKeyboard PCBs are just taped to a cardboard structure to test angles for comfort - about ~40 degree tenting (angle up from table) and ~40 yaw (angle between the halves).

  8. The twin-PCB #ErgoMechKeyboard idea using #GoldFingers and a PCB edge connector ribbon cable works! My 6th #MechanicalKeyboard design - and one of the easiest to assemble with just an RP2040-Zero and hotswap sockets to solder.

I have not run out of new things I want to try yet 😅 astrobeano.blogspot.com/2026/0

  9. OK they’re portable and flexible to get the most comfortable angles, but a DIY split #ErgoMechKeyboard has it’s downsides!

There’s Bluetooth pairing or janky cables to worry about (TRRS has a short circuit risk), two controllers to solder, trickier firmware, etc.

But what prompted this was the much higher risk of knocking one half off your desk! Only realised today, but when I chipped the corner of my Forager based keyboard this also looks to have broken the tiny #SeeedXiao reset button. That in turn leaves me no easy way to reflash the keyboard when my new #ZMK firmware isn’t working 😱

All in all, a mono body #MechanicalKeyboard with a split layout at a comfy angle seems like a safer bet for me… #SplitKeyboard

  10. Regarding the other unfinished #MechanicalKeyboard on my desk: The TRRS sockets to finish soldering up this #ErgoMechKeyboard should arrive today - but I’ve only just noticed the 3.5mm cable I planned to use that came with my Corne #SplitKeyboard has only theee wires (like a standard headphone jack). This needs four wires for full duplex communication - so another delay waiting on parts 🤦‍♂️

  11. I still don’t have the TRRS sockets to finish soldering this wired split #MechanicalKeyboard, so for now I’m testing it as two half keyboards and trying to find the best angles for the planned single piece follow up #ErgoMechKeyboard - here’s a cardboard prototype of a ~40 degree tended keyboard. It feels a bit too high up (could be lowered about 2cm), but usable…

  12. I've been having fun with the artistic possibilities of #PCB design within #KiCad - I have seen some stunning bits of art in this medium (#PCBArt)!

This #MechanicalKeyboard PCB art effort is much simpler, some line art imported as a silkscreen graphic, and then some simple texturing with the ground fill hatching.

(Why a tent? This is a small tented #ErgoMechKeyboard, meaning the PCB and keys are tilted relative to the table. The keyboard has 34 keys and the name Bivouac34 refers to a small wild camp)

  13. Initial feedback from Eldest on their first #MechanicalKeyboard (my Slump52):

The keys are too hard to press (35g red pros for the letters, and 50g red switches for the rest - just what I had on hand), easily fixed $$$ but for now it almost forces them into one finger typing.

The 5 key jams on the 2 key, more sanding of the keycaps required (had this with the A and F keys too).

And from my point of view, as an #ErgoMechKeyboard, the top pinky/ring keys would take some getting used to!

  14. It started out smoothly, then got a bit tricky (can you see the two bodge wires on the back?), but my fourth #MechanicalKeyboard PCB design is assembled and working - suspect eldest will not want to wait till Christmas to try it out - will it pass as an #ErgoMechKeyboard? 🎄⌨️

A shame the Chosfox CFX keycap set didn’t include 1u Escape, shift, backspace, tab, nor anything like a cross or asterisk for the multiplication key on my layout 🤷

  15. #ErgoMechKeyboard design mistakes this far:

    1. Cursors too close to thumb keys (realised with #3DPrinting test plate).

    2. Castellation pads are only on the top of the PCB, and I want the #RaspberryPi Pico controller mounted underneath (facing up) for my case design. Looks like surface mounting with pins again 😬

    3. USB port too tight (in this resin print at least), cable fits but needs a bit more margin for tolerance.

    4. Possibly the key spacing is just a fraction too tight (but could just have been the keycaps - only had to sand U/J)

  16. My first designed from scratch #MechanicalKeyboard has arrived from JLCPLC - fingers crossed it actually works once soldered up - but they did a good job with #3DPrinting the resin case (just need to sand the bottom a little), and it looks like it will all go together as planned - and in time for Christmas 🎄

Still unsure if it will count as an #ErgoMechKeyboard but that was the idea behind the curve aside the looks 🤞

  17. And then there were two: This post was typed on my phone using my first self built Bluetooth #ErgoMechKeyboard, running on battery power with #ZMK firmware: the Gamma Omega Hesse. Like my other #MechanicalKeyboard designs this has a diode-free PCB using #GraphTheory. github.com/unspecworks/gamma-o

  18. I've got to say, Boardsource.xyz has done right by me.

I have my beloved lily58 back up and running thanks to a replacement pcb/micro-controller. Many thanks to all who gave me troubleshooting pointers. I think it was a defective micro-controller all along.

My digits are confused but happy to be back to column staggered!

  19. Well, now that my lily58 ergo mech board is down I'm falling back to my spare. It's an Epomaker TH 66 and its fine for a standard board.

I got to say though going from column staggered back to row staggered is not a happy place for me.

  20. I'm crushed. The left half of my lily58 ergo mech keyboard started flaking out yesterday. Once plugged in it types 5tgb and then those keys go dead. I'm thinking a short.

It's a boardsource.xyz buy, not quite a year old. I'm going to reach out but any troubleshooting would be appreciated.

  21. I started in the ergo world by putting a post-it near the keyboard, so when I looked down I got reminded to move and blink several times. Then I discovered a whole world: split mechanical keyboards, switches, chairs... I discovered the fast typing races, so I started to practice until becoming great at it, and now my eyes are dry because I no longer see the keyboard when typing.
This is obviously a #joke, I suck at fast typing. #ergomechkeyboard
