Antes de que el mundo lo leyera, Paulo Coelho fue tratado como si su sueño fuera una enfermedad.
Nació el 24 de agosto de 1947 en Río de Janeiro y desde muy joven quiso ser escritor.
No era el futuro que su familia esperaba para él.
Sus padres querían una vida más segura, más respetable y más fácil de explicar ante los demás.
Para ellos, la literatura parecía una amenaza, una fantasía peligrosa, una desviación del camino correcto.Paulo no quería ser abogado.
Quería escribir.
Esa decisión, que hoy parece sencilla, le costó una parte dolorosa de su juventud.
Entre 1966 y 1968 fue internado tres veces en instituciones psiquiátricas.
Allí recibió tratamientos muy agresivos para la época, incluidos electrochoques.
Era apenas un joven intentando defender una vocación que quienes lo rodeaban no entendían.Lo más duro de esa historia no es solo el encierro.
Es que su deseo de convertirse en escritor llegara a interpretarse como un problema mental.
Sin embargo, aquellas experiencias marcaron profundamente su obra.
Décadas después seguiría hablando de la libertad, el destino, la búsqueda personal y la necesidad de escuchar la propia voz frente a las expectativas ajenas.Pero la vida de Coelho estuvo lejos de ser tranquila.

Formó parte de movimientos contraculturales, experimentó con drogas, se relacionó con ambientes esotéricos y trabajó como periodista, actor, director teatral y compositor.
Muchos desconocen que fue letrista de algunas de las canciones más famosas del músico brasileño Raul Seixas.Aquella etapa también le trajo problemas políticos.
Durante la dictadura militar brasileña fue detenido e interrogado.
El propio Coelho afirmó años después que incluso sufrió torturas durante aquel período.Y aquí aparece uno de los episodios más extraños de su biografía.
Junto a Raul Seixas participó en una organización alternativa llamada Sociedad Alternativa, inspirada en las ideas del ocultista británico Aleister Crowley.
Aquello alimentó numerosos rumores.
Algunos sectores conservadores llegaron a acusarlos de satanismo, aunque gran parte de esas historias fueron exageradas por la prensa de la época.En 1986 ocurrió algo que él considera el gran punto de inflexión de su vida.
Realizó el Camino de Santiago.
Aquella experiencia espiritual acabaría inspirando su libro "El Peregrino" y cambiaría por completo su manera de entender el mundo.Después llegó "El Alquimista".
Lo escribió como una fábula aparentemente sencilla sobre un pastor llamado Santiago que abandona todo para perseguir un sueño.
Al principio casi nadie le prestó atención.
La primera edición fue un fracaso comercial.
Su editorial dejó de apostar por el libro y las ventas fueron decepcionantes.Muchos habrían abandonado.
Coelho insistió.
Buscó otra editorial y siguió creyendo en la historia cuando casi nadie más lo hacía.
Poco a poco ocurrió algo extraordinario.
Los lectores comenzaron a recomendar el libro a familiares y amigos.
El boca a boca hizo el resto.
Con el tiempo, El Alquimista se convirtió en uno de los mayores fenómenos editoriales del planeta, con más de 150 millones de ejemplares vendidos y traducciones a decenas de idiomas.Pero no todo el mundo admira a Coelho.

Hay quien dice que Paulo Coelho no es escritor.
Y ahí creo que confundimos cosas distintas.Puedes pensar que escribe mal, que su literatura es demasiado sencilla, que sus libros están llenos de frases que parecen hechas para compartir en una taza, que sus historias no tienen la profundidad que tú buscas o que, sencillamente, no te gusta.
Todo eso es perfectamente discutible.Pero decir que no es escritor porque no consideras buena su literatura es como decir que un músico deja de ser músico porque no te gusta cómo toca.
Paulo Coelho escribe libros, tiene una obra, lleva décadas publicando y ha conseguido llegar a millones de lectores en todo el mundo.
Eso lo convierte en escritor, te guste su literatura o no.Otra cuestión muy distinta es preguntarse si es un buen escritor.
Ahí sí entramos en el terreno de la crítica, de la calidad literaria, del estilo, de los recursos que utiliza y de lo que cada lector espera de un libro.Y también conviene recordar algo que a veces molesta: vender millones de libros tampoco convierte automáticamente a alguien en un gran escritor.
Pero vender millones tampoco hace que deje de serlo.Podemos discutir su calidad literaria todo lo que queramos.
Lo que me parece bastante absurdo es negar la condición de escritor simplemente porque su manera de escribir no nos gusta.A veces confundimos «no me gusta» con «no existe».
Y son cosas bastante diferentes.
