  1. Happy Publication Day! My translation of "Damnatio Memoriae" by Chilean author I. A. Galdames is out today in Neon Dystopia!

This dark science fiction story explores memory and loss on Día de los Muertos in future under constant surveillance.

  2. While most of the news coming about AI is almost universally bad, there are a few good things that AI is actually well suited for, such as transcription of ancient texts:

    www.medievalists.net/2026/01/32000-medieval-manuscripts-transcribed-using-ai/

It's worth reading through the article to see how they trained the dataset very narrowly and optimized it for energy usage. Given the decreasing numbers of young scholars going into these disciplines, I have been excited to see how AI affects translation and transcription efforts. While I don't think AI should be used for really...much of anything at all, I think this particular use is a very good one.

  4. Just got a reminder why I prefer translating novels instead of trying to catch new small translation jobs every day - I got one offered by an old client at 8am, next email at 8.30am cancelled because I did not answer yet.
Still searching for more nice authors who would like to publish their English novels in German language - most of my clients either ran out of novels to translate or retired. More info: textesusannedoering.wordpress.

  10. I am #translating an exhibition on witches and have (fortunately) discovered a new (to me) false friend: conjure/conjurer.

In English, conjure means to evoke or make appear.

In French, conjurer means to cast out or ward off.

So glad I caught this one. A few French sentences make a lot more sense to me now! Just goes to show that if you don't understand the source text, don't simply assume it was poorly written (even though that's so often the case!) 😬

  11. Meditating on the Wizard Book and language design

At the beginning of 2023 I came up with an idea of hand-translating code from the Wizard Book into a semi-imaginary programming language based on Jevko.

  12. If the Kalevala had not been translated into English, Tolkien might never have gotten into it. Galadriel would talk funny.

If the Kalevala had not been translated into Swedish, Finns themselves might not have gotten into their own national epic. Akseli Gallen-Kallela would have had so much spare time.

In the last Filtrit-video of the year I go through a history of translations of the Kalevala, and compare three different English translations of a specific poem, "The Battle of the Sampo" (Kirby, Magoun, Bosley).

Like, subscribe, share, use as fodder for dinner party conversations with language nerds etc.

  13. “We aim to help our customers and consumers save CO2 – for example by washing at lower temperatures or by switching to haircare products that do not need to be rinsed out and so do not require water to be heated up.“

If I get this right, my not rinsing out the shampoo will stop climate change and save the planet. Well done, #Henkel. Makes me wanna put a bullet through my head for translating that #PurposefulGrowth bullshit agenda of yours.

  14. Probably you know your #pronouns, but do you know others? #translating pronouns from one language to another is not an easy job. Not only #gender plays a role, also number, #clusivity, and #formality.
