Since it’s become a bit of a common misconception, I may as well clear something up about video game mods and hacks.

Having a decomp available makes it easier to mod a game, or drastically change up its functionality.

But it’s not required. If you’re tech savvy enough and know enough assembly code, you can make equally impressive mods without one.

I installed #THUGPRO. The community ran Tony Hawk mod that gives you all the classic THPS maps and more. The project is quite old at this point, but it still has some activity.

It's awesome that it is working. I love the game, but it has some drawbacks with modern, adult eyes. P2P wasn't so spooky when it was mostly kids playing together.

Now, I'm not so quick to hand my IP to some random on the internet playing a game that's not intuitive to access.

The game is also virtually untouched on the bug side. All the old glitches work, which is fun and cool but that definitely includes the ability to buffer overflow other players with multiple techniques.

I also found out that I hold ancient knowledge about the game that died with tripod and GeoCities, but I never forgot it. Mostly modding related. Old addresses and strings and such. Guess it's time to start writing down my memory so I can share it with the younger crowd checking out THUG.

You’re adding features and changes to a project whose original developers have long left and who basically provided no documentation at all.

In other words, it’s like a software engineering job from hell. But that challenge and awkwardness is all part of the fun…
