  8. Just had to write an “I'll miss you" note to one of my favourite clients, the language services coordinator at a federal agency who has fallen victim to the latest round of cuts (thank god we didn't elect PP 😳🙄). She's been a joy to work with over the years, and I've happily gone "above and beyond" for her when I wouldn't for any other client.

I was planning to keep them on after I retire, but now I'm reconsidering. The suits never consider the intangible losses when they "rationalize."

  10. Asking an experienced #translator to revise machine translations is like giving an experienced chef a McDonald's happy meal and asking them to turn it into a gastronomic experience. It's soul destroying.

When all the competent chefs switch careers because they find the work distasteful (ahem), all that remains is fast food.

AI has its uses, but its misuse will destroy expertise in translation on an unprecedented scale. But hey, it was a great career while it lasted.

  15. @stephanie Boy oh boy did I get lucky with my translation career. Got in mid-90s, not too long after most companies laid off their in-house #xl8 departments and the whole industry basically went freelance. And I’m retiring in 4 months. 😅

(Now I hear that some companies are hiring in-house again specifically because of AI.)

  20. @stephanie For descriptions of fine art, the descriptions can be so abstract, they're meaningless without the image itself.

Back when I was translating CD liner notes for classical music, I often had to actually listen to the piece to understand the text.

The biggest issue facing the #xl8 sector today isn't AI. It’s that most people have no idea what translation actually is. It's a PR/communications problem more than anything else.

  21. How to tell me you have absolutely no concept of what a translator does without saying you have absolutely no concept of what a translator does:

Client sends me descriptions of artworks to translate but refuses to send me copies of the images themselves.

“We want you to translate the text, not interpret the art."

And people are surprised when I tell them I'm so ready to retire. 🙄

  22. Just came across the word “chronophage" (time-consuming) in a French text I am translating.

It is now my mission to start using it in conversation (and “chronophagous" in English).

  25. Proofing an annual report this morning, and I came across a page heading with two (count em!) exclamation points.

  27. @fernsehchat

  28. Ugh... Client asks me to rush-translate the description of the exhibition I’m translating... and lo and behold, the exhibition title is "new and improved.” Thanks for the head's up, client. You just spent weeks tweaking that new title, and now I'm expected to come up with the English version in a day...

Say it with me, people: “translation is not merely replacing words with other words.”

  29. It occurs to me that the main reason I find translating annual reports so exhausting is that they are, by their very nature, as vague as possible; whereas my own instincts as a writer are to make things as clear as possible.

A good translator will transfer the vagueness into the translation, but by christ, there's only so much I can do and still come out of it with my soul intact.

  33. Just came across a useful online resource: the University of Regensburg's "Electronic Journals Library", much of which is open access.

All subjects and many languages are covered. I had a quick look and found a promising 'Yearbook of Transatlantic German Studies' called 'andererseits'.

I'm sure you'll spot some gems, too.

  34. I #translate a lot of museum exhibitions, and one of my favourite jobs is translating the introductory panel—generally the text that visitors see as they enter the exhibition.

It's usually relatively brief (3 or 4 paragraphs) and has to give visitors a sense of what they're about to experience in a breezy, inviting style.

Not an easy task, but a really fun challenge that puts your writing skills to the test!

  35. Just received another issue of the free German magazine 'fluter', which is aimed at teens like my son. This time, it's all about apprenticeships and learning a craft. The editor specifically mentions that many magazines like theirs could be written by AI soon. But AI won't be able to restore a valuable work of art or be a good chiropodist (at least not yet!).

It's an interesting read and a sign of the times.

And if you're wondering what's happening to the poor bloke's head on the cover: he's getting a traditional ear piercing with what looks like an old nail. 😬

Why? In Germany and other European countries, apprentices used to walk from town to town to learn their trade. (This journey was called "die Waltz".)

Before they set off, they'd get a gold earring, so they'd always have money in case of emergencies (or for their own funeral).

The magazine is free to download. Have a look!

  37. I feel the need to add, as a follow-up to my previous posts, that I do value academia.

Exploring the deepest depths of a remote corner of knowledge is an endeavour for which I have the utmost respect and admiration, though personally, I prefer to skim the surface of many different topics.

I also understand that there are some outstanding academic writers out there. I see you!

  38. It's been a long time since I've translated an academic paper.

I'd forgotten how much academics like to pad and obfuscate.

So much of my translation work in recent years has been for museums, where the goal is concise, clear, easy-to-read copy—the polar opposite of most academic writing, come to think of it.

Dear client, this translation is likely to make your paper readable. My apologies! 😳😬🙄
