  2. The Looking Glass

Alice peers through a looking glass and discovers another version of herself—one untouched by pain, grief, fear, and survival. What follows is a quiet reckoning with freedom, resilience, imagination, and the strange ways we learn to recognize ourselves.

  3. How does one come to love and stand in awe of God? When a person contemplates His great and wondrous works and creations, and sees in them wisdom without measure or end, at once he loves and praises and longs with an immense longing to know the Great Name.
(Mishneh Torah, Foundations of the Torah 2:2)

  4. Rainbow Promise Prints

A woods wander, interspersed with sunshine and rain, was graced with my Creator’s celestial watercolors. “Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and a rainbow occurs in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.” Genesis 9:14-15 Sketched on mountain canvas, here’s a few rainbow promise prints that captivated my gaze in wonder, and calmed my soul. I M Blessed … […]

  5. Glacial Grandeur

In the Chugach Range lies the magnificent Matanuska Glacier. Creeping slowly forward at a rate of 1ft./day, this 27 miles long, 4 miles wide colossal frozen sheet births the headwaters of the Matanuska River, and is the largest glacier in the United States accessible by car. Practically in our front yard just 25 miles up the road, Ellie and I never tire of visiting this magnificent flowing river of ice. Here’s what transfixed our gaze in awesome wonder yesterday. We are blessed . . . May U […]

  6. A quotation from Carl Sagan

Claims that cannot be tested, assertions immune to disproof are veridically worthless, whatever value they may have in inspiring us or in exciting our sense of wonder.

Carl Sagan (1934–1996) American scientist and writer
The Demon-Haunted World, ch. 10 “The Dragon in My Garage” (1995)

  8. Curiosity is our mind’s foundational attraction toward the unknown—a drive to explore reality and integrate it into a corresponding internal model of understanding. Its evolutionary counterpart is fear—not as an opposite force, but as a conditional outcome: a withdrawal from the unknown when we cannot bound the implications of engaging with it enough to guarantee perceived safety.

  9. Fourteen Paintings for No One: The Most Somber Art Ever Made

Sad art is everywhere, and it comes cheap. Somber art is rare, because somber means sorrow that keeps its shape after the tears dry, sorrow with gravity, no laugh track, no lifeline. Ask which art is the most somber of all and the question sets a brutal standard: the winner must be born of grief, must depict grief, must refuse every exit from grief, and must offer no joy and no gesture of human harmony anywhere in its making or its reception. That last clause is the killer. Art is a social act before it is anything else. A song wants an ear. The play wants a house. Every poem wants a voice to carry it. Harmony rides along in the address itself, before a single consoling note gets played, and so nearly every candidate for the darkest art in the world fails on delivery, whatever horrors it contains. 10. The world doesn’t become less extraordinary with age. Sometimes our brains simply become so efficient that we stop noticing what was there all along.

  11. Something in you remembers a mode of being where the unknown was not yet a threat. Where attention did not need to defend itself. Where a question could open without immediately being dragged before the court of usefulness.

  12. Stumbling Block

It seems I have always been stumbling, tripping over the unintended in a fog of wandering wonder.

The mist has been ever around me, my cloud by day. I am enveloped by mystery.

    You do indeed love to surprise me, O God;

two girls find shiny stones in a fountain and their joy chases away the despair at not finding a loved one,

the hospitality of friends lightens the weight upon a heavy chest from a returning to what was and the traveler can breathe again into what will be,

a mother’s words and the night breeze dries a daughter’s tears and she can smile at the deep thrum of a bullfrog,

lovers lie for a moment in the morning and the frustrations of yesterday fade into the quiet beginnings of another day.

    It is time then.

I rise up into the bone crackling morning, my body protesting, my spirit already stretching out along the places I will see.

Inside, I find I am ready for more stumbling.

  13. We spend so much time searching for magic in the world that we sometimes overlook the most magical thing we carry with us every day—our brains.

  15. The Sodden Astronomer

They say, Do not look at the stars,
or you will step into holes
and sink your shoes in mud.

So you can keep your eyes
    fixed on the ground,
    safe from puddles,
    safe from falling,
    and miss the lights
    burning above in the dark—

    except for a stolen glance,
    a hurried sip of heaven.

    Or you can throw
    caution to the wind,
    lift your thirsty face
    to those bright jewels
    sewn into black velvet,

    and stumble on
    with wet feet.
