Under the Falls by Richard Russo

When Tyler Sinclair’s band Stone Mountain returns to Stone Mountain, NY for a benefit concert he wasn’t thrilled to be there. Apparently, most of the town wasn’t thrilled to see him either.

His friend Doc had been hurt in an accident as a child and is a paraplegic. The benefit was for him. An announcement is made at the end of the show as Tyler is preparing to sing a song, he is famous for, but the audience turns on him and starts throwing stuff at the band. Tyler freezes up on stage. He is dragged off and the story begins.

Stone Mountain is a poor community nestled in the hills with the wealthy. It seems the fans resent Tyler for the way that he left years ago and the fact that he never came back until now. They also think he used them by writing songs about the community.  

It is a story about the haves and the have nots. Three young men and one woman all had goals to leave Stone Mountain. Tyler is the only one who succeeded.

As Tyler, his girlfriend, and his manager leave in a limo and are involved in a deadly accident. It looks as though someone wanted to hurt them. Who was it and why?

There were some things about the story that didn’t feel true to me. I didn’t feel that the way he left town as a young man was enough reason for the resentment and anger his friends held against him. I don’t think that was enough of a reason for them to hate him so much. There are other parts of the story I felt didn’t make sense, but I can’t explain more without spoilers.

This is my first book by Richard Russo. I know that he is an award-winning author and have a friend who has encouraged me to read Empire Falls for a very long time. I own the book but haven’t managed to read it yet.

I received an arc (advance reader copy) for Under the Falls so that is how I managed to read this one first. If someone is kind enough to give me a free book, I feel a duty to read and review as soon as possible.

Russo is a good writer, but I can’t say I loved this book. I think I expected more. I did see that he was asked to write a pilot for a television series that was scrapped. This is why this book was written.

I think because of his reputation, I had hoped for a better story. It is interesting but tedious and I didn’t feel compelled to finish it quickly. There is a lot of inner dialogue.

I haven’t given up on Russo though. I am probably more curious about reading Empire Falls sooner rather than later now.

If you like stories about rock bands, small towns, and secrets kept this might be a good book for you.

If you are already a Russo fan, you do need to read this one just to say you did.

There are several author events coming soon in my area. I hope to go to as many as possible. An indie bookstore is having two events within the next couple months with Jodi Picoult and Liane Moriarty.

The Des Moine Public Library has three more Avid authors scheduled for the next few months, Eloisa James, William Kent Krueger, and Craig Johnson. I have added the dates to my calendar.

Several years ago, I was asked to moderate an event with Eloisa James at an Avid event. It was held at the Central Library in downtown Des Moines. I happened to be the President of the local chapter of RWA at the time and since she writes romance, I was a good choice. It was a fun night, and I was thrilled to be a part of a program that I have supported for many years.
