I've long suggested that one of the best ways to align with the future is through this thinking: when everybody is running one way, run the other way!

Be the contrarian. The hole in the bucket, the square peg with a bunch of round holes, the one who says "why not?' when everyone else is saying 'why?'

We are on Day 17. Yesterday, we looked at the terrifying math of the future—the sheer scale of change that is coming. 1-2-4-16-64 vs. 1-2-3-45.

When faced with that kind of overwhelming scale, the natural human instinct is to feel overwhelmed. And I am willing to admit that one reaction I see in common with all of my audiences is that this feeling is universal. I've been doing text-message-based polling from the stage for over 15 years, and one overwhelmingly consistent attitude is that people feel universally overwhelmed by the speed of the future.

So they try to avoid it. They try to fit in. They take the cautious route.

They choose the comfortable over discomfort.

The result? When we feel a need for comfort, to fit in, to follow the herd instinct, we try to be like everyone else. We look for safety in numbers. Case in point: we look at our competitors and say, "Well, they are doing AI this way, so we should too." Korn Ferry made this observation about AI: "Among the most expensive keeping-up-with-the-Joneses games in corporate history."

Need more proof? We seek out "best practices," which is usually just a fancy word for "copying the average."

I rest my case.

In a linear world, fitting in was a survival strategy. You survived by being a cog that fit perfectly into the machine.

In an exponential world, conformity is a death sentence.

Die Waldbrände werden kommen: Ein Interview mit Toby Shone

Der ehemalige politische Gefangene redet über seinen Anarchismus, das 325-Projekt und den Widerstand gegen die physischen und mentalen Gefängnisse, die uns alle umgeben.

Du hast kürzlich über die Wichtigkeit von Solidarität und Verbindungen zwischen Gefangenen und ihren Unterstützern draußen gesprochen. Kannst du uns Beispiele für diese Art der gegenseitigen oder kollektiven Stärkung im Kampf gegen die ständige Unterdrückung durch das Gefängnis nennen?

Kurz bevor ich 2024 freigelassen wurde, gab es im C-Flügel des HMP Garth in Leyland, wo ich festgehalten wurde, gewaltsame Zellendurchsuchungen durch eine Spezialeinheit der Gefängniswärter, die als National Search Team bekannt ist. Das #NST übernahm den Trakt mit Hunden und Schutzausrüstung. Die #Razzia fand Zelle für Zelle statt, begleitet von sinnloser Brutalität. Wir wurden zu zweit mit Handschellen gefesselt und in einen verschlossenen Nassraum gebracht. Einige Gefangene wurden geschlagen, misshandelt und viele unserer Sachen wurden zerstört. Einige der Jungs wehrten sich, überschwemmten ihre Zellen, schlugen gegen ihre Türen oder spielten aus Protest laut Musik. Am nächsten Tag weigerte sich der ganze Trakt, nach der morgendlichen Freistunde in die Zellen zurückzukehren. Als lautstarker und unkontrollierter Mob forderten wir die sofortige Rückgabe der beschlagnahmten Sachen, den Ersatz der beschädigten Sachen und verurteilten die Gewalt. Das führte dazu, dass die Wärter zurückwichen. In diesem Moment konnten die Wärter nichts machen, weil wir alle zusammen und ohne Anführer handelten. Am Ende der Mittagspause war der Streik vorbei.

Ähnliches erlebte ich, als einer der Gefangenen aus Depressionen oder Hoffnungslosigkeit heraus ums Leben kam. Demonstrationen vor den Gefängnissen, in denen ich festsaß, waren ebenfalls ein starkes Erlebnis, das sowohl die Wärter als auch uns beeindruckte. Vor allem, wenn Feuerwerkskörper den Nachthimmel erhellten und die Genossen draußen kämpferisch waren. Ich fand, dass sich die anderen Gefangenen in diesem weitgehend systemfeindlichen und kriminellen Umfeld im Allgemeinen gegenseitig unterstützten. Immer wenn ich verlegt oder in eine andere Zelle gebracht wurde, kamen die Jungs aus der Zelle, um zu sehen, ob es mir gut ging und ob ich etwas brauchte. Ich half anderen bei ihren #Gerichtsverfahren oder bei der Gefängnisverwaltung und versuchte, gemeinsame Interessen und Subversives zu finden. Wir versuchten, uns gegenseitig zu unterstützen, und wenn ich ein Problem hatte, brachten die Jungs auch ihre Forderungen vor. In den meisten Gefängnissen des Landes gibt es jeden Tag Verweigerungen und Proteste gegen die Bedingungen und die Behandlung. Ich habe aufgehört zu zählen, wie oft ich während meiner Haft von Verweigerungen der #Gefängnisarbeit und #Streiks gehört habe. Das ist sehr verbreitet, ebenso wie das Klettern auf die Netze, die die Treppenabsätze trennen, um gegen die Behandlung und die schlechten Bedingungen zu protestieren.

Als ich hörte, dass Genossen draußen revolutionäre Solidarität leisteten, spürte ich unsere Kraft innerhalb des Gefängnisses, das kann ich sagen. Von den Berichten über die direkten Aktionen im Fall #Adream in #Chile, #Frankreich, #Italien, #Indonesien und auf der ganzen Welt bis hin zu den #Telefonaktionen, die ich aus dem Gefängnis heraus zu Treffen von Genossen draußen durchführen konnte, spürte ich die Wärme der Genossen. Auch das Wissen um die zensierten Briefe und Bücher, die #Solidaritätsfonds und #Benefizveranstaltungen war großartig.

Für Leser, die 325 nicht kennen: Was kannst du uns über das Projekt und seinen Inhalt sagen?

325 ist ein anarchistisches Netzwerk für Gegeninformation und direkte Aktion. Im November 2020 hat die niederländische Anti-Terror-Polizei auf Anfrage ihrer deutschen und englischen Kollegen den Server nostate.net geschlossen, auf dem die Website von 325 gehostet wurde. Die Website war eine langjährige Informationsplattform für allgemeine Nachrichten, Berichte, Kommuniqués, Publikationen, Veranstaltungshinweise usw. Die Website deckte hauptsächlich #Europa, #Lateinamerika und #Südostasien ab. 325 ist auch ein #Printmagazin, das unregelmäßig erscheint, und das Kollektiv hat Dutzende von Publikationen herausgebracht, darunter den Newsletter Dark Nights, der eine eigene Website hat.

Im Laufe der Jahre hat sich 325 an einem sich entwickelnden partizipativen internationalen Netzwerk beteiligt, das auf direkter Aktion und der Unterstützung von Gefangenen basiert und Raum für verschiedene Strömungen anarchistischer, antikapitalistischer und zivilisationskritischer Gruppen bietet. In den letzten Ausgaben des Magazins hat sich der Schwerpunkt der Analyse etwas auf die tiefgreifenden neuen industriellen Veränderungen in #Produktion und #Technologie verlagert, wie künstliche Intelligenz, #Biowissenschaften und #Automatisierung. Das Archiv der 325-Website ist ein wichtiges Dokument des sozialen und bewaffneten revolutionären Kampfes über mehrere Jahre hinweg in Europa und international. Das Projekt begann 2003 und wird fortgesetzt.

Ich hab den Begriff „Anti-#Psychiatrie“ zum ersten Mal in 325 gesehen. Es gibt viel zu sagen über die Schnittpunkte dieser Agenda mit dem Anarchismus, aber du könntest uns auch einfach erzählen, warum ihr es damals für wichtig gehalten habt, das Thema anzusprechen.

Das war eine gemeinsame Entscheidung, die aus verschiedenen Einflüssen auf die frühe Gruppe in Brighton entstanden ist. Ich kann unsere Erfahrungen mit veränderten Bewusstseinszuständen und dem Zusammenbruch auferlegter sozialer Konditionierung erwähnen. Einige aus unserer ursprünglichen Gruppe hatten Erfahrungen mit psychiatrischer/psychologischer Kontrolle und geschlossenen Einrichtungen, und wir alle interessierten uns für den Einsatz der Psychoanalyse zur politischen Unterdrückung, für die Arbeit von Wilhelm #Reich, R. D. #Laing, das Sozialistische Patientenkollektiv (SPK) und die anarchistische Analyse der Beziehung des Individuums zur postindustriellen Gesellschaft.

Unser Genosse aus der Schweiz, der in den 2000er Jahren an einem frühen Anti-Zivilisations-Netzwerk in Europa beteiligt war, verfasste das Anti-Psychiatrie-Manifest „Reclaim Your Mind: An Urgent Message for all those who have or are in danger of being labelled mentally ill“ (Befreit euren Geist: Eine dringende Botschaft an alle, die als psychisch krank eingestuft wurden oder davon bedroht sind), das in der ersten Ausgabe des Magazins „325“ veröffentlicht wurde. Obwohl es im Kollektiv im Laufe der Jahre unterschiedliche Perspektiven zu diesem Manifest gab, ist die allgemeine Position, dass die Gesellschaft #Pathologie fördert und dass Medikalisierung letztendlich schädlich ist, ebenso wie Inhaftierung. Bei der Anti-Repressions-Versammlung, die im März letzten Jahres vom Anarchist Black Cross #ABC im #Cowley Club in #Brighton organisiert wurde, hat ein Genosse aus #Schweden beschrieben, wie Genossen von den Behörden statt ins Gefängnis in psychiatrische Einrichtungen gesteckt werden, um ihre Fälle aus der #Öffentlichkeit zu nehmen und sie wegen ihrer anarchistischen Ideen zu einer medizinischen „Behandlung“ zu zwingen.

Das war eine Taktik, die das National Security Team und die Anti-Terror-Polizei während meiner Inhaftierung und nach meiner Freilassung unter Auflagen gegen mich angewandt haben. Es ist sehr wichtig, das anzusprechen, weil solche Kontrollen von diesen Behörden routinemäßig eingesetzt werden und sie versuchen werden, sie wo immer möglich gegen Anarchist*innen und die radikale Linke anzuwenden.

Die #Gesetzgebung schränkt den Spielraum für gewaltfreie Ausdrucksformen von Unzufriedenheit immer weiter ein, mit härteren Strafen für Störungen durch Massen oder sogar kleine Gruppen und mit polizeilichen Befugnissen zur Auflösung gewaltfreier Menschenansammlungen. #Während die Organisatoren des Climate Camps präventiv durchsucht wurden, konnten die rechtsextremen Angriffe im letzten Sommer nicht verhindert werden. Wie kommt es, dass der britische Staat mitten in einer globalen faschistischen Machtübernahme so besessen von den Krümeln des Widerstands von unten ist?

Nun, wir dürfen den kleinsten Ausdruck von #Dissens und #Rebellion niemals unterschätzen, denn sie alle haben Macht. Wenn das Regime die Funken nicht erstickt, wird es zu einem #Flächenbrand kommen. Auch wenn ich mit den Positionen des bürokratischen Teils der meisten dieser Gruppen nicht übereinstimme, freue ich mich über ihre Erfolge und wünsche mir, dass sie sich zu einer revolutionären Bewegung entwickeln. Alle wirksamen Proteste werden auf #Unterdrückung stoßen. Aus dem #Gefängnis habe ich im Fernsehen die Eskalation der Sachbeschädigungen gegen #Waffenfirmen, die mit Israel Geschäfte machen, während des andauernden Völkermords in #Gaza, die Sperrung von #Autobahnen und die Zerstörung von #Barclays-#Banken gesehen. Die radikale #Linke, #Ökologen und #Anarchisten sind im Grunde die einzige #Opposition in Großbritannien.

Seit sie am 18. Juni 1999, dem Globalen Aktionstag, von antikapitalistischen #Ausschreitungen mit Schäden in Millionenhöhe überrascht wurde, hat sich der Staat zum Ziel gesetzt, die soziale Bewegung zu manipulieren und in eine Sackgasse zu führen.
