El Shatt: Memories of a Yugoslav Partisan refugee camp travelling from North Africa to Croatia

    published #OA in Memory Studies

    co-authored with Marijana Hameršak (#Zagreb )

We look into the history of a #WW2 #Yugoslav #refugee #camp in #Egypt and how it is remembered in #Croatia until today. In short: It was never forgotten, but integral but changing part of Yugoslav and regional Dalmatian history.

  3. #NowListening: Videosex

It's been a while since I listened to this #Yugoslav Hi-NRG outfit from #Ljubljana. Too long really because this album is not only a great showcase of the burgeoning #newwave scene in the country, but it also is one of the absolute best albums in the Hi-NRG genre. The tracks are tight, upbeat, fresh and quite experimental at times, like the closer track Neonska Reklama 2. This album doesn't ever disappoint!

  4. How to ignite several resentments and peeve a truckload of linguists in the process: refer to the Southern Slavic (e.g. Serbian), Eastern Slavic (Czech) and Northern Slavic (Russian) language families as the #Yugoslav, #Zapadoslav, and #Severoslav language, respectively

  6. #Belgrade in Winter (1914)

At the beginning of 1914, the unknown cameramen recorded the first film about the Serbian capital city Belgrade for the Serbian film producer Svetozar Botorić. The camera also recorded the icebergs movements on the 13th February 1914 upon the old Calendar (the 26th February upon the new Calendar), which had never been seen until then.

Early in the morning on the 24th March 1914 two trains arrived at the Railway station in #Belgrade carrying the first generation of recruits from the newly liberated regions, Old #Serbia and Southern Serbia.  After the official reception, the recruits headed via central city streets towards the barracks in the Upper Town of Kalemegdan Fortress.

  9. If you want to hear the music you've (probably) never heard before, I have a suggestion for you! Here's a hard-rock ballad from 1975 that isn't a Led Zeppelin song, but might as well be!

Bijelo Dugme: Šta bi dao da si na mom mjestu

There's even an English-language version of that song I've learned about just now, but it's not as nearly well-sounding, mainly because of the language differences: youtube.com/watch?v=mMIgIlDD9B

  10. #NowPlaying: #Azra - Kao I Jučer (Single Ploče 1983-86)
    2003 #Croatian reissue.

Before I even went to #Croatia, I had researched a bit about #Yugoslav #NewWave music. This is an excellent compilation of the more #PostPunk style. Interestingly, the people at a record store couldn't believe I had bought this down the street as apparently there's some big dispute going between the singer and their label. I was told to cherish this #CD, so I will!

  11. If you ever wanted to have a fresh look at #brutalist #architecture, this thread by Fuad Alakbarov is not a bad starter for ten.

"Spomeniks" are #Yugoslav war #memorials with a twist: they don't follow the paradigm of #socialist #realism de rigeur in other #communist countries. There is a website with more information on this type of architecture:

There are more interesting historical threads on Fuad's profile. Give him a follow at @alakbarov
