I shot this Ocotillo plant in Borrego Springs. The tall, spiny arms and long shadows portray quiet resilience beneath a wide blue sky. Do you prefer a bold focal plant or an open horizon? I think it would suit your space.

I thought ocotillo were solely indigenous to the Sonoran desert, but according to our Volunteer Park [Plant] Conservatory, this one is from Madagascar.

It was scary-pretty.

I enjoy seeing Ocotillo canes bend waaay over when a bird lands on them, like this Gambel’s Quail, and then spring back into position when the bird takes off! (From my Perpetual Journal; caterpillar = art/text from this week a year ago).

#Ocotillo are strange plants, each following its own schedule & rhythm. My biggest one (about 10’, pictured here) sprouted leaves a couple weeks ago and looking alive & gorgeous. The other 4 still dormant, so looking dead... #FouquieriaSplendens for you!
