Weekly output: AT&T OneConnect, federal privacy fears, Artemis II, better inflight WiFi, 6G
This week started with me in Chicago for the Online News Association’s conference, then had a quick trip to Boston to see family for Easter, and tomorrow will have me off to San Francisco for the HumanX conference to lead two panels there.
I wrote an extra post Tuesday for Patreon readers recapping some scenes from SXSW, including a not-yet-campaign appearance by California governor Gavin Newsom and a stemwinder of a speech by Patreon founder Jack Conte on how human creativity can endure through the rise of AI.
3/31/2026: AT&T OneConnect Bundles Fiber, Wireless, Doesn’t Say What Mobile Service You Get, PCMag
I had just enough spare time at ONA to field this story–even factoring in time to try, without success, to get AT&T to explain just what wireless plan subscribers would get with this new offering.
4/1/2026: The One Thing Americans Can Agree On: The Feds Collect Too Much Personal Data, PCMag
I wrote up this study by the Center for Democracy & Technology a day after it was published Tuesday in part because I had nearly no free time on day two of ONA.
4/1/2026: NASA Launches Artemis II, Its First Moonshot Since 1972, PCMag
I watched the launch Wednesday evening of Artemis II with fingers crossed through main engine cutoff, then followed the first few hours of the mission while writing up this post. I updated the story a day later after the translunar injection burn of the Orion spacecraft’s service module engine committed astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen on a flight around the Moon and then back to Earth. I can’t wait to see this American and Canadian crew’s Earthrise photos.
4/2/2026: Fast, Free Wi-Fi Now Arriving at These Airlines, AARP
I showed up at my occasional client’s site not as a writer but as a subject-matter expert, courtesy of AARP writer Berit Thorkelson quizzing me over e-mail for this piece about how low-Earth-orbit satellite constellations like SpaceX’s Starlink are upgrading inflight WiFi.
4/3/2026: Unfortunately, It’s Time to Talk About 6G. Here’s What You Need to Know, PCMag
I got most of my reporting for this done at MWC Barcelona, but then needed a little more time to collect some industry insight about the wireless industry’s curious rush to hype 6G when so many of its customers are still trying to discern how 5G is supposed to make a noticeable difference in their everyday phone experience.

@rogerparkinson Using #Java software to write #Rust doesn't seem right. That's why I ditched #RustRover (actually written in #Kotlin, but still on #JVM), that's superior to #Eclipse.
I used Eclipse #CDT for almost 10 years some time ago, but it became a burden at some point. Then #VSCode appeared... and then #Zed.
I still use last two, as Zed doesn't have any preview extensions due to lack of built in webview support.

New survey data finds that nearly 1 in 5 high schoolers have had a romantic #ArtificialIntelligence relationship, or they know someone who has. And 42% of students surveyed say they or someone they know have used #AI for #companionship.
That's according to new research from the Center for Democracy & Technology (#CDT), a nonprofit that advocates for #CivilRights, #CivilLiberties & responsible use of #data & #technology.

2/n In this thread, let’s focus on what we’ve done in the last week, and what we might do next. The ultimate goal would be to have a test bed for a multi-model, multi-modal causal #DigitalTwin of a microgrid using local renewable energy source, primarily wind and solar, with local battery storage. As quoted in the first toot, we took the first step last month. This month, we added an Anker Solix F3800 Plus host battery and expansion battery, and a 400W portable Photovoltaic Panel

If you're up before the sun this week, check in on the Eastern sky before dawn to see Venus and Jupiter, they will be in conjunction on Tuesday before dawn, they are joined this week with the constellations Orion and Taurus. Use the three stars in Orion's belt to draw an imaginary line towards the horizon to find the bright star Sirius.
If you're going to stargaze just after sunset this week check out the Western sky for the bright star Arcturus.
There's a meteor shower (Perseid) this week peaking on Monday night going into Tuesday, the Moon is pretty bight and won't set until after dawn, so maybe you'll see a few or maybe not? I hate to try to predict really.

We also see how #DigitalTwins are increasingly used to make better decisions with digital twins of cities, spaces, traditional/vertical farms, supply chain graphs, and even the whole planet. This is where #Causalinference in DigitalTwins comes into play to bring direct and indirect monitoring to understanding the impact, through causal digital twins #CDT of new technologies, policy decisions, regulatory changes This is especially important for #ClimateChange mitigation

The Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) has joined the American Civil Liberties Union, Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), and Fight for the Future calling on the House Energy and Commerce Committee to oppose
H.R. 7521, the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act”.This bill would functionally ban the distribution of TikTok in the United States, and would grant the President broad new powers to ban other social media platforms based on their country of origin.

How will we continue to model ever evolving techniques? How might we include them in and #SystemArchitecture #SystemsArchitecture and the concepts of sensor analytics ecosystems #SensAE and other ecosystems, especially in digital twins and #causal #DigitalTwins #CDT

It’s true … privacy is dead. With @czds and as always thinking about how privacy, transparency, security and convenience apply to #IoT #IIoT #SensorAnalyticsEcosystem #SensAE #DigitalTwins especially causal digital twins #CDT #IoTPL #IoTCL

While @czds and I were preheating the oven and shaping the bread [Moon’n’Stars] pictured below, our watches buzzed with a notice from the range that there was a problem. The screen on the range showed an error code. Second try passed. Smart Diagnostics showed that the “heater” failed but all else, including “etc” passed.#IoT #IIoT #SensorAnalyticsEcosystem #SensAE not even much of a monitoring #DigitalTwins let alone causal digital twin #CDT #SmartHome #IoTPL #IoTCL

This use of #IoT #IIoT in industrial #SensorAnalyticsEcosystem #SensAE shows that #DigitalTwins and eventually causal digital twins #CDT have the power to reduce attacks as attack surfaces increase — #IoTPL #IoTCL
