I keep a Perpetual Journal; here are my entries from my yard 1, 2 & 3 years ago this week: Ironwood & Pencil Cholla in bloom & a Lucy’s Warbler in a nest box. In 2026 our Ironwood haven’t bloomed; we have very few Cholla flowers & no Lucy’s Warblers in our nest boxes.😞

Yesterday we were granted another #cactus treat in our backyard: the first ever flower on one of our chollas! It was a pleasant surprise, especially since we missed a prickly pear flower by being out of town for a week. This is the first time I've seen a cholla flower so close up.

On a lighter note, any botany nerds know what species of cholla this is? This is from the south rim of Canyon de Chelly, Arizona. I've never seen one with a single vertical trunk like this. Others nearby have multiple trunks but all show this general growth habit.

A #wild tree #cholla growing in #Arizona.
The #TreeCholla is found throughout the American Southwest and further south into Mexico.
The long stems can be removed from the #plant, and can be dried into a useful walking cane, hence the other common name of Cane Cholla.
The #purple #flowers create an #edible yellow #fruit.

Happy winter solstice!
Cholla is greeting the solstice down in the canyon. Originally I meant to express the relative warmth of desert winter, but I think all I really captured was the relative prickliness of it--which is high. Perhaps the blue sky will be comforting to friends in stormy weather today though!
