  1. My best-guess ID for this #caterpillar, encountered yesterday afternoon on the sidewalk, is the Yellow Woolly Bear, larva of the Virginia Tiger Moth (Spilosoma virginica). This is based on the lazy method of asking AI to identify the photo, plus looking it up in an actual book, my trusty Peterson's Field Guide to the #Moths by Beadle and Leckie (2012 edition).

  2. We have a lot of milkweed plants but haven't seen too many monarch caterpillars. Yesterday though, I spotted a good sized one! #monarch #caterpillar #photography #summer #closeup #milkweed #illinois

„Images show Israeli military using six companies’ bulldozers and excavators to demolish south Lebanon villages.

The Guardian geolocated and verified images showing the Israeli military using excavators made by 6 companies – #Caterpillar, #Volvo, #Hyundai, #Doosan, #Hitachi and #Komatsu – to destroy homes, public utilities, shops and …

  5. I've been going through around 5000 #iNaturalist plume #moth records in #Australia that are not yet research grade and for which I'd not yet added identifications. Almost all the species here can be identified well from a good photo.

The most interesting discovery today was a handful of #caterpillar observations that clearly represent the first photos of the #larva of the common species Stangeia xerodes. See the explanation here:

  6. Melloona – where things grow a little differently

    • ♥ ! • Happy Fantasy Faire • ! ♥ • It’s that time of the year again. Every year I think I know what to expect, and every year it still feels a bit unreal when everything finally comes together. What starts as scattered ideas becomes a world of its own. This year, Luna and I sponsored and built Melloona. Melloona is a quiet, curious realm where the familiar turns gently impossible. Expect wild colors, vines and of course, melons. It doesn’t shout, it hums softly and […]

  7. "“It’s gross at one level, but it’s also kind of adorable. They’re cruising around like, ‘Oh, this looks delicious. I’ll eat some of this and then put the rest on my back.’”

In 2024 a new species of caterpillars got discovered on Hawaii that not only use other insects' body parts to hide under but also occasionally are cannibalists! I just love everything about this.

  10. Identification from #caterpillar #photos is often difficult. The photos seemingly show the #blackspotchestnut, a #moth of the #Noctuidae (an alternative could be Eupsilia transversa, I think less likely). It is widespread in Central/Southern #Europe. The #moths hatch in October and #overwinter, with interrupted periods during which they feed on fallen fruits, etc.. Caterpillars are found in #May/June. #biodiversizy #winteradaptations

  11. I went for a walk yesterday in Zeeland and saw LOTS of caterpillars on the road at a certain point. Luckily there was little to no car traffic there. Most were black with spikes, those will become peacock butterflies (Aglais io, 🇳🇱 dagpauwoog). But I also saw a HUGE green one of the hawk-moth (Agrius convolvuli, 🇳🇱 windepijlstaart). Apparently those are rare in NL.
