  1. My best-guess ID for this #caterpillar, encountered yesterday afternoon on the sidewalk, is the Yellow Woolly Bear, larva of the Virginia Tiger Moth (Spilosoma virginica). This is based on the lazy method of asking AI to identify the photo, plus looking it up in an actual book, my trusty Peterson's Field Guide to the #Moths by Beadle and Leckie (2012 edition).

  6. All 5 Black Swallowtail caterpillars have now formed chrysalids. Oddly enough, the final caterpillar decided to position itself right in between two existing chrysalids, a tight squeeze. And the upper chrysalis shown here is slightly larger than the other two; possibly a female?

  13. I've been going through around 5000 #iNaturalist plume #moth records in #Australia that are not yet research grade and for which I'd not yet added identifications. Almost all the species here can be identified well from a good photo.

The most interesting discovery today was a handful of #caterpillar observations that clearly represent the first photos of the #larva of the common species Stangeia xerodes. See the explanation here:

  14. Melloona – where things grow a little differently

    • ♥ ! • Happy Fantasy Faire • ! ♥ • It’s that time of the year again. Every year I think I know what to expect, and every year it still feels a bit unreal when everything finally comes together. What starts as scattered ideas becomes a world of its own. This year, Luna and I sponsored and built Melloona. Melloona is a quiet, curious realm where the familiar turns gently impossible. Expect wild colors, vines and of course, melons. It doesn’t shout, it hums softly and […]

  15. Going through phone snaps from November's biodiversity survey in Bajaritas Canyon in Mexico. There were lots of really cool caterpillars. I have no idea what kind of butterfly this turns into.

In 2024 a new species of caterpillars got discovered on Hawaii that not only use other insects' body parts to hide under but also occasionally are cannibalists! I just love everything about this.

#Moths of the #Saturniidae are characterized by #adults that camouflage with closed wings (#mimesis), but perform a #mimicry behavior, when disturbed by presenting their #eyespots. They have stunted/fully reduced #mouthparts and reproduce only. Species of genus #Automeris live mostly in the tropics/subtropics, #caterpillars can look #colorful and #bizarre and are defensive via stinging hairs. Exples: Automeris egeus or A. niepelti. The #caterpillar below might be related.

  18. The long road to Marrakesh: 40 years of copyright obstruction to human rights and social justice

One of the little-known but extremely telling episodes in the history of modern copyright, discussed in Walled Culture the book (free digital versions available), concerns the Marrakesh Treaty. A post on the Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO) site from 2017 has a good summary of what the treaty is about, and why it is important:

It sets out exceptions and limits to copyright rules so that […]

  20. I went for a walk yesterday in Zeeland and saw LOTS of caterpillars on the road at a certain point. Luckily there was little to no car traffic there. Most were black with spikes, those will become peacock butterflies (Aglais io, 🇳🇱 dagpauwoog). But I also saw a HUGE green one of the hawk-moth (Agrius convolvuli, 🇳🇱 windepijlstaart). Apparently those are rare in NL.

  21. Three #NativeAmerican Tribes are doing business with corporations responsible for war crimes in #Palestine: #Israel's #Elbit Systems, and the U.S. #Corporations of #Raytheon Missiles, #GeneralDynamics and #Caterpillar

    By #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, May 28, 2024

TUCSON -- "Native American Tribes are partnered with corporations responsible for #WarCrimes in Palestine. The #ConfederatedSalishAndKootenai Tribe of Montana is in a partnership with #ElbitSystems, an Israeli weapons producer. #Salish and #Kootenai own #InternationalTowers, and in partnership with Elbit, built #SpyTowers, known as integrated fixed towers, on the #TohonoOodham Nation.

"Caterpillar, being used for the destruction of Palestinian homes, has a facility located on the #Tohono O'odham Nation's Tech Park in the San Xavier District near Tucson.

"Raytheon #Dine' Facility, is located on the #NavajoNation, south of Farmington, New Mexico, and produces missile parts for Raytheon, among the top war profiteers in Palestine.
Raytheon, and International Towers, are tenants at the University of Arizona Tech Park in Tucson.

"Ofelia Rivas, Tohono O'odham, lives in the western portion of the Tohono O'odham Nation, where the Salish and Kootenai tribal enterprise constructed the spy towers. Rivas describes the #Militarized partnership.
'#Infiltration today is in our faces, a blatant lack of integrity by tribes and institutions. #TribalGovernments are enticed by university programs for young people. The young people unknowingly become partners and #collaborators of the international military complex,' Rivas told Censored News today."

  22. An unidentified butterfly or moth caterpillar in Central Park (late May). From a distance these look 'fuzzy', but up close you can see that the hairs really are big spikes/needles. Hopefully no one was silly enough to actually touch it.
