  1. My best-guess ID for this #caterpillar, encountered yesterday afternoon on the sidewalk, is the Yellow Woolly Bear, larva of the Virginia Tiger Moth (Spilosoma virginica). This is based on the lazy method of asking AI to identify the photo, plus looking it up in an actual book, my trusty Peterson's Field Guide to the #Moths by Beadle and Leckie (2012 edition).

  8. Melloona – where things grow a little differently

    • ♥ ! • Happy Fantasy Faire • ! ♥ • It’s that time of the year again. Every year I think I know what to expect, and every year it still feels a bit unreal when everything finally comes together. What starts as scattered ideas becomes a world of its own. This year, Luna and I sponsored and built Melloona. Melloona is a quiet, curious realm where the familiar turns gently impossible. Expect wild colors, vines and of course, melons. It doesn’t shout, it hums softly and […]

    ✧ Euthrix potatoria ✧

Euthrix potatoria, commonly known as the drinker, is an orange-brown moth in the family Lasiocampidae. The species' common and scientific names derive from the larva's supposed drinking of drops of dew. It is found in Europe, most frequently found in marshy places, fens and riversides but may also be seen in drier, grassy ter...

  10. 1/2

Violating a rule of thumb, finally drilled into me, to "look up", at tree tops and branches, while doing bird/nature photography.

On this outing, I was looking for more 'low-hanging fruit' (actually not at all easy to find!) Looking for scrub jays in the scrub, mostly. I did not succeed with the jays, but was surprised to see some other (ground) creatures I wasn't looking for.

I came across a deer, plus the 'Echo Moth'

  11. Spotted this VERY early (< 0.5cm) monarch #butterfly #caterpillar and the evidence of its feeding on a weedy milkweed by my building's loading dock

  12. @PetraOleum Caterpillar for the win!

I just popped out and had a look. Hungry caterpillar has no time for games. Hungry caterpillar eats right across it's old mine and keeps on feeding.

  13. Here's a little caterpillar of the NZ endemic moth species, Zapyrastra calliphana, mining it's way through a leaf of the NZ native plant, Muehlenbeckia australis.

This native caterpillar only eats this kind of native plant. Each caterpillar completes its larval life inside just one leaf, before dropping to the ground to pupate.

I found this in my garden on Friday as part of the City Nature Challenge (#CNC2023).
