My best-guess ID for this #caterpillar, encountered yesterday afternoon on the sidewalk, is the Yellow Woolly Bear, larva of the Virginia Tiger Moth (Spilosoma virginica). This is based on the lazy method of asking AI to identify the photo, plus looking it up in an actual book, my trusty Peterson's Field Guide to the #Moths by Beadle and Leckie (2012 edition).

All 5 Black Swallowtail caterpillars have now formed chrysalids. Oddly enough, the final caterpillar decided to position itself right in between two existing chrysalids, a tight squeeze. And the upper chrysalis shown here is slightly larger than the other two; possibly a female?

Caterpillar is bringing to AI deployment what it learned from automating mining
Caterpillar has spent decades putting autonomous machines to work at remote mining sites. It’s now bringing that experience to AI deployment.

A Monarch #butterfly #caterpillar that had been on some Milkweed in the back yard. It's now on the ground next to the Milkweed plants. Is it crawling off to form a chrysalis?

#caterpillar #NativePlants #Iowa
On the #DailyWalk, I checked out a few different Swamp Milkweed plants that I had noticed in bloom a few weeks ago.
It looks like deer have chomped the young seedpods. Definitely not good for increasing the number of plants.
On the good side, I found another monarch caterpillar.

Another interesting garden find. This morning we came across a hornworm caterpillar covered in parasitic wasp cocoons. Unfortunately this eventually kills the caterpillar but the wasp are beneficial to the ecosystem killing pest bugs. Just nature being nature which I find pretty cool, and a bit brutal.
Have an awesome Saturday!

Monarch #Caterpillar
I actually started this a couple of months ago, but then stalled out on the flower buds, feeling both bored and intimidated by them.
finally got inspired to finish during this recent drawing hyperfocus. -
Four out of the 5 Black Swallowtail caterpillars have either formed or are in the process of forming chrysalids. In the photo the upper caterpillar has assumed the characteristic J shape prior to becoming a chrysalis, and the bottom one has completed forming the chrysalis.

#Caterpillar #Butterflies #NativePlants
On today’s #DailyWalk, I took along the loppers and a handsaw. Part of my trail system goes across an area that’s often too soggy to mow, and that area needed some clearing before I can go through again with the tractor/mower.
Anyway, there’s swamp milkweed in the swampy area 🤔🤠 And on one plant I found a monarch butterfly caterpillar.

We now have 5 Black Swallowtail caterpillars on the garden Fennel. We collected them and have sacrificed more Fennel so that the cats (to use the cool/nerdy lepidopterist's slang for caterpillars) are now ensconced in a luxurious cage for observation. We thus hope to guide them on their journey to butterfly-hood.

I don't think I've ever seen them before. They were all over nettles in one small area.
EDIT: Peacock butterfy, Aglais io. Great thanks to @harrysentonbury for identifying them.

I can't help thinking that all these coincidences can't just be coincidence.
For example, this morning Steven was watching a video which featured Norah Jones singing Pink Pony Club, which he's never heard of before in his life. He came downstairs and checked his Mastodon feed, and someone is sharing a performance of Pink Pony Club as the first post he sees. Coincidence?
There was a tiny little caterpillar crawling across my placemat as I'm about to have lunch. I carefully take him outside to put him on the ground and find his twin on our step. I have never seen this particular kind of caterpillar before. And I don't see any others now. Coincidence?
Too weird.

Melloona – where things grow a little differently
• ♥ ! • Happy Fantasy Faire • ! ♥ • It’s that time of the year again. Every year I think I know what to expect, and every year it still feels a bit unreal when everything finally comes together. What starts as scattered ideas becomes a world of its own. This year, Luna and I sponsored and built Melloona. Melloona is a quiet, curious realm where the familiar turns gently impossible. Expect wild colors, vines and of course, melons. It doesn’t shout, it hums softly and […]https://alruniaahn.wordpress.com/2026/04/24/melloona-where-things-grow-a-little-differently/

✧ Euthrix potatoria ✧
Euthrix potatoria, commonly known as the drinker, is an orange-brown moth in the family Lasiocampidae. The species' common and scientific names derive from the larva's supposed drinking of drops of dew. It is found in Europe, most frequently found in marshy places, fens and riversides but may also be seen in drier, grassy ter...

An unidentified butterfly or moth caterpillar in Central Park (late May). From a distance these look 'fuzzy', but up close you can see that the hairs really are big spikes/needles. Hopefully no one was silly enough to actually touch it.

#Pipevine swallowtail #caterpillar — I’ve had the vine for years and seen a few caterpillars, but this year has been amazing, at least 10 today eating all the young leaves. Another 20+ probable eggs. I hope I see the #butterflies eventually. #gardening

@PetraOleum Caterpillar for the win!
I just popped out and had a look. Hungry caterpillar has no time for games. Hungry caterpillar eats right across it's old mine and keeps on feeding.
-
Here's a little caterpillar of the NZ endemic moth species, Zapyrastra calliphana, mining it's way through a leaf of the NZ native plant, Muehlenbeckia australis.
This native caterpillar only eats this kind of native plant. Each caterpillar completes its larval life inside just one leaf, before dropping to the ground to pupate.
I found this in my garden on Friday as part of the City Nature Challenge (#CNC2023).

Here are a few #horsetail plants, seen on my walk #today (yesterday, actually).
Plus a wandering "woolly bear" (#TigerMoth) #caterpillar.
Horsetails are 150 million-year-old living fossils that were eaten by - yes! - Jurassic #dinosaurs.
Also, their unique node spacing inspired #JohnNapier in 1614 to invent #logarithms.
Admittedly, some rude US jurisdictions (wtf Oregon...?) classify them as noxious weeds.
But imho this is an amazing plant with a wonderful résumé 💚

I am for one always very partial to a good high throughput screening approach but I bet you will love this too..

I was told this was #AngleShades #Moth #Caterpillar Mid March 2022
Caterpillar ID is not my strong point.
I'm not keen on disturbing them either for a better look.Hanging out on #Knapweed leaf with #OxeyeDaisy nearby in my urban garden #Wildflowers border.
Looking plump. Moth is a big sized fella. Would be a nice catch for any urban #bats.
Native #Wildflowers are important as are untidy overwintering areas in urban settings for increasing #wildlife.
