  1. #SweetPotato Companions: Best #CompanionPlants For Sweet Potatoes

    By Liz Baessler
    last updated June 18, 2021

Excerpt: "So what are some of the best companion plants for sweet potatoes? As a rule of thumb, root vegetables, such as #parsnips and #beets, are good sweet potato companions. Bush beans are good sweet potato companions, and certain varieties of pole beans can be trained to grow along the ground intermingled with sweet potato vines. Regular potatoes, though not actually closely related at all, are also good sweet potato companions. Also, aromatic herbs, such as thyme, oregano and dill, are good sweet potato companions. Sweet potato weevil, a pest that can wreak havoc on crops in the Southern United States, can be deterred by planting summer savory nearby.

What You Shouldn’t be Planting Next to Sweet Potatoes

The biggest problem with planting next to sweet potatoes is their propensity to spread. Because of this, one plant to avoid, in particular, when planting next to sweet potatoes is squash. Both are strong growers and fierce spreaders, and putting the two next to each other will only result in a fight for space in which both will likely be weakened. Even in the case of companion plants for sweet potatoes, be aware that your sweet potato vine will grow to cover a very large area, and take care that it doesn’t crowd out its beneficial neighbors."

  2. Planted a Cherry Sweetie and Campari tomato in the ground and finished off the row with Kentucky Blue pole beans in very small cloches that are just woodlice protectors. The garlic and beets are looking good too but the beets need some more thinning it looks like.

  3. Tired of all these beet men coming to my door trying to sell me crates of beets and then just giving up on it and leaving several goddamn crate of beets in front of my door next to all the ones the previous salesmen like I DIDN'T WANT YOUR DAMN BEETS WHY THE FUCK DID YOU GIVE ME THESE BEETS I DON'T HAVE ANYWHERE ELSE TO PUT THEM :neoraccoon_scream_angry: :neoraccoon_scream_angry: :neoraccoon_scream_angry:

  4. Finally slopped myself up a script to sanitize the tags on my Lidarr music, then run it through MP3Gain to normalize the volume (modifying the actual file, not just ReplayGain tags) before importing into Plex.

Leaned on the AI a fair bit because I'm an idiot. Got sick of it hallucinating Beets & MP3Gain command line options that don't exist.

Then after it blew away my music library and I had to pull a backup, I finally bucked up and went to the docs for once, and manually config'ed the main parts.

Then I told the AI to go fuck itself.

  9. I have never cared much for #music #streaming services. Most my music listening is of independent productions sent as promos, or bootlegs, or is unreleased. All I want is to be able to stream my recent mp3 imports to my phone, rate them + leave notes on the go so that I can come home and add them to my DJ library. This #lidarr #navidrome #tubifarry #beets #metadataremote just might be the solution i've been waiting for for years.

  10. Cooked some beets yesterday night (it was a bit of a drama because I started too late and then the pot cooked over, which is especially fun with red beet water...) and made a lovely lunch salad today!

Red beets, feta, and pumpkin seeds in a dressing of mustard, horseradish, olive oil and dark balsamic vinegar. Yum!

  11. Sauteed red beet stems & greens (finally found some at the market!) with bread with German leberwurst (in laws brought severals cans when visiting in summer - I like leberwurst but I don't eat quiet as much as they brought, so any chance to eat some is welcome...).

Being back in my own house means cooking real good, at least until I'm on the road for some work travel in two weeks again. So I'm making as much use as possible of my kitchen.

  12. Cold Climate Gardening Tips for #Maine’s Short Growing Season

By Jessica Knowles, February 3, 2025

Excerpt: "Cool-season crops are a great choice because they can withstand lower temperatures and often mature quickly. #LeafyGreens like #spinach, #kale, and #lettuce not only grow well but can also be harvested multiple times throughout the season, making them highly productive. Root vegetables such as #carrots, #radishes, and #beets thrive in Maine’s rocky soil when it’s properly amended with compost. Brassicas, including #broccoli, #cabbage, and #cauliflower, are particularly hardy and perform exceptionally well when planted early in the season."

  14. @jendefer

Try roasting beets, whole or cut up, on the BBQ grill or in the oven on a cookie sheet.

I like to cut them in half or quarters on the BBQ or into irregular slightly smaller pieces in the oven (six to eight pieces per large beet), and season accordingly to your preference - I prefer a little salt and some savory seasonings like thyme, marjoram, basil, or oregano. Steak and asada seasonings are good too, and mixing whatever you season it with in a measuring cup with EVOO a bit of balsamic vinegar is typically how I mix those seasonings. Then stir and apply with a brush.

Don't be afraid to let them char a bit for character, again, to your preference of taste. When finished, they should be tender and melt away in your mouth.

Some folks aren't into the flavor of olive oil, but don't fret! melted tallow or lard works just as well, better even, for crispiness on the outside, without any intrusive flavors - but please don't use any seed oils, that defeats the purpose of eating healthy. These beets are still delicious this way even if you don't baste them with anything or even season them at all.

You can thank me later, or invite me to your next backyard BBQ.

  15. And yeah, I've seen urine used for various purposes, but not as a dye mordant... Not for the squeamish!

20 Natural Dye Plants You Can Forage and Grow in Your Garden

    By Catherine Winter

Excerpt: "Would you prefer to go a super-natural route, since you’re using plant-based dyes? If you’re aiming to be as self-sufficient as possible, there are also all-organic mordant options as well.

    Natural Mordants:

    - Sumac: Simmer fresh sumac twigs for about an hour, strain out the twiggy bits, and reduce the liquid by half
    - Urine: human urine is ideal for mordanting, but you’ll need to age it. Collect it in a jar and allow it to age for several days. [🤢 ]
    - Salt: You can use standard table salt as a mordant, but Kosher salt can yield some of the strongest color-fastness. [I've used that]
    - Vinegar [That too]
    - Wood ash lye

"You’ve probably noticed that some of these are alkaline, and some are acidic. Alkaline mordants tend to work best with plant-based fibers like cotton, linen, and #hemp. In contrast, acidic mordants like vinegar are better with animal fibers like #wool, #alpaca, and #angora.

"Note that if you use an acidic mordant and your colors still run, you can set the color by dipping the fabric in a 50/50 vinegar/water solution. In contrast, if you’ve used an alkaline mordant like lye or baking soda [another one I've used], an acidic solution will strip the color rather than setting it." [Been there, done that!]

  20. Some time ago, I experimented with putting music files on #IPFS, and using #RDF to link the IPFS URIs with #MusicBrainz data:

    toot.teckids.org/@nik/11455288

Today, @klecmatt, a 13 year-old from @Teckids, surprisingly made a plugin for the @beets music tagger, which can directly import albums into IPFS and RDF using my schema:

The kids are alright, they do #LinkedData 😉 …

(I later added remote pinning support.)

  21. Ok. Phew. It's 3am and I started working on my HomeLab set up at ~10am i think? I got a lot done today. All of these services are up and running. Never mind the measly 1tb of disk space it's showing at the top... I have to set that to a different HDD later. But I got most of the media services up:
    #Jellyfin #Jellyseerr #Radarr #Sonarr #Prowlarr etc. I had #beets installed, too but I don't think I need that quite yet. My other #proxmox sever hosts #Sub:sonic .

    Happy so far. #selfhosting #homelab
