  1. 2 journal articles on the anti-autoimmune effect of allicin, a constituent of fresh crushed garlic:

  4. Hoping to plant garlic this fall? You better order your seed garlic, soon. Several varieties I wanted to order are already sold out. 🙁

  5. Found me some sawmill junk and with a bit of tablesaw work and a few screws turned it into two more frames for drying racks.

Then some fence maples got a draft letter and before long were chopped up and nailed to the frame on one end. Green maple doesn't split when nailing, unlike dry sticks. And they do grow fast and furious here.

    Can dig more garlic now.

  6. Garlic harvest. Only half of it because all the drying racks are full, even the Volkswagen one.

Yes, the garden is weedy as fuck. That doesn't matter and may even be beneficial. I strimmed the weeds down to the level of the garlic leaves so I could see it and went digging.

This is winter garlic, planted in October. Voles dug tunnels under the snow and mulch all over this bed but didn't touch a single garlic bulb.

Need to build more drying racks before I can get the rest out. And next year plant less of it :)

    Excerpt: "Store Long-Lasting Crops

Little or no special equipment is required to put these goods away until you want them:

#Apples: Apples keep well for about 6 months at temperatures above freezing but below 45°F. If you don’t have a root cellar, a double cardboard box in a cool basement can approximate the conditions.

#Carrots: After harvesting, remove the green tops and brush off any excess dirt. Put the carrots into a cardboard box and pack dry sand around them. Store the box in a cool basement.

#Onions and #Garlic: Hang mature, dry-skin onion bulbs in a mesh bag in a cool, dry, airy location. Braided onions and garlic can also be hung.

#RootVegetables: If covered with a thick layer of mulch (hay, dried leaves, straw), carrots, garlic, horseradish, leeks, parsley, parsnips, radishes, and turnips can be left in the ground well into the winter and harvested into the spring."

  9. And now everything is redolent of sautéed #garlic in olive oil.

  10. Pulled up the #garlic today. Got quite the mix of sizes and completeness. Got about 80% harvest, which given the lack of effort I put in, I’m quite ok with.

Was it worth it? By any objective measure, absolutely not. I could have bought this much garlic and/or powder for about $5 and it would have been perfectly ok.

But, it’s really good garlic, the next round will give better results, and I put in approximately 0 effort. So I’ll plant more come fall, and with hopefully slightly more effort we’ll get slightly better results.

    Two garlic cloves per onion.
It makes the heart a little happier.

  12. After and before, dried out my garlic harvest for the year. It was ready to clean up the heads today. Should be a nice bit of homegrown stuff for me to use into the fall. If it’s like last year’s stuff it’ll be a little sweeter and milder than store bought you get. #gardening #garlic
