- executed >600k people for political reasons only during Stalin's rule, most of them in extrajudicial manner without any fair trial (btw in a way directly prohibited by #Soviet constitution).
- built #gulag, where incarcerated more than million people in various years, in particular for political reasons.
- plotted 3 artificial #famine s - with millions of people killed. The 2nd one in #Ukraine (1932-33) - with clear signs of premeditated genocide.
- forcibly expelled a number of ethnic groups (#CrimeanTatars, #Chechens, Soviet #Germans just to name a few) to distant regions of USSR, often into not inhabitable conditions, with fatalities reaching dozens of percents.

We’re at the #Baltic #Sea, but the weather hasn’t been kind. We’ve come here on Saturday, but today (Wednesday) was the first day with a decent temperature and sun…
We’ve been sharpening stones to make an axe from a piece of rock broken and sharpened on another stone, tied to a stick. It was a lot of fun.
We’ve also had a dab in the water, but it wasn’t exactly a pleasure…😂

Farms in #Latvia are hiring more foreigners amid a shortage of local #labour as well. In #Lithuania, over 5,000 foreigners are working on farms.

The budget #deficit in #Lithuania was the smallest in the #Baltic States at 0.9% of GDP in Q1/2026, #Eurostat reported. The #budget deficit was 1.2% in #Estonia and 1.9% in #Latvia. Estonia's #debt to GDP ratio was the lowest in the EU at 25.2%, compared to 42.3% in Lithuania and 46.9% in Latvia.

This was a fantastic installation at The Baltic in Gateshead- ‘Working Class Hero (A Portrait of John Lennon)’ by Candice Breitz. She filmed Lennon fans singing their way through Plastic Ono Band and had each one on it's own screen hung up the echoey steel stairwell at the gallery. An utterly awesome experience, I only remember "Working Class Hero"
