  1. @PhoenixSerenity Cultural story time 😁🇵🇭🇦🇺. Moving out of home, Mum gave me sweet potato leaves (kamote) to grow. Shoved them in the garden bed in my #Perth uni student rental, never did anything with them, they just sat there and didn't die.

Dug them up when my husband and I bought our first home. I turned 40 and started gardening. We literally put down roots. The sweet potato took off and now, not only do I cook it regularly, I was able to give it back to Mum, whose vines died an unfortunate death years ago at the hands of an overzealous lawnmower.

It was so special earlier this year, the two of us in her garden bed in #Albany re-planting the kamote. Mum has Stage 4 cancer (she's doing really well right now) and it made me realise how important the sweet potato is for food, culture and family ❤️

(I'm actually so jealous because hers are growing better than mine - she even got flowers) #SweetPotato #Kamote

  2. Please consider harvesting & cooking/eating #SweetPotato / #Yam #leaves.
They're not true potatoes, not in the nightshade family. Their leaves are fully edible & a rural Asian food staple.

Try this simple, tasty recipe, with yam leaves 🙂

  4. We grew too many sweet potato slips, so we put one in the pond for fun to replace the water cress eaten by the local skunk.

The slip is getting new leaves and is growing roots on every node that's in the water. No, we are not trying hydroponic sweet potatoes. It simply provides landing places for insects to bathe or drink.

  7. #SweetPotato Companions: Best #CompanionPlants For Sweet Potatoes

    By Liz Baessler
    last updated June 18, 2021

Excerpt: "So what are some of the best companion plants for sweet potatoes? As a rule of thumb, root vegetables, such as #parsnips and #beets, are good sweet potato companions. Bush beans are good sweet potato companions, and certain varieties of pole beans can be trained to grow along the ground intermingled with sweet potato vines. Regular potatoes, though not actually closely related at all, are also good sweet potato companions. Also, aromatic herbs, such as thyme, oregano and dill, are good sweet potato companions. Sweet potato weevil, a pest that can wreak havoc on crops in the Southern United States, can be deterred by planting summer savory nearby.

What You Shouldn’t be Planting Next to Sweet Potatoes

The biggest problem with planting next to sweet potatoes is their propensity to spread. Because of this, one plant to avoid, in particular, when planting next to sweet potatoes is squash. Both are strong growers and fierce spreaders, and putting the two next to each other will only result in a fight for space in which both will likely be weakened. Even in the case of companion plants for sweet potatoes, be aware that your sweet potato vine will grow to cover a very large area, and take care that it doesn’t crowd out its beneficial neighbors."

  8. Good morning Fedi friends. It was a cool 10c when I woke up & it’s very dewy & damp outside. Today is going to be a little lower in temps reaching a still lovely & sunny 23c. It’s going to be a very beautiful day.
Today is my eldest granddaughters 19th birthday & it’ll be pizza night on Friday. Staying home today & planning a stretch class, my legs felt a bit tired after the walk yesterday, but all good today. Still a stretch class is always so nice & relaxing.
I’ve wanted to learn how to grow sweet potatoes properly for ages & now that I’ve been gifted a sprouted one I can 😁. I’ve been reading & watching little videos of how to manage sweet potatoes 🍠 that have sprouted. I can’t plant out the slips as the ground is cooling now. I can leave them as is for longer then pick them off & put them in a jar with water & they will produce roots that I can plant out after winter. It feels odd doing this before winter even starts, but I will when I deem it the right time. I can even plant them in grow bags when winter is over & only having a small garden is appealing. Anyway, I now know the go to whoa of how.
Hope you all have a wonderful #Wednesday, hoping for some sanity in this world, stay safe out there 🌻. #Weather #Family #Exercise #SweetPotato

  9. Good morning tooters. Sleeping super soundly & longer after daylight savings end, it does help that it’s a little cooler as well. A nice 12c when I got up today & it’s beautiful & sunny outside heading to 25c.
I could go swimming today, but the exercise class I did yesterday involved a fair bit of shoulder work so I think I’m just going to take myself off for a walk.
Easter 🐣 weekend was good fun. Really enjoyed my family time with all the grandkids on Sunday, my youngest granddaughter gifted me a garden ornament, it’s very bright & a little different & it made me laugh. It is of course now in the garden in a pot that will produce orange flowers after winter. Yesterday I just had a quiet day just going to my sisters place to say goodbye to her visitors & came home with a cooked chook as they’d bought too many & a sweet potato that is sprouting, looks awesome - I’d mentioned I was looking for one & I hope I can keep it going until springtime to plant out the slips.
I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend & are feeling refreshed, take care out there 🌻. #Weather #Family #Exercise #SweetPotato
