  1. #SweetPotato Companions: Best #CompanionPlants For Sweet Potatoes

    By Liz Baessler

Excerpt: "So what are some of the best companion plants for sweet potatoes? As a rule of thumb, root vegetables, such as #parsnips and #beets, are good sweet potato companions. Bush beans are good sweet potato companions, and certain varieties of pole beans can be trained to grow along the ground intermingled with sweet potato vines. Regular potatoes, though not actually closely related at all, are also good sweet potato companions. Also, aromatic herbs, such as thyme, oregano and dill, are good sweet potato companions. Sweet potato weevil, a pest that can wreak havoc on crops in the Southern United States, can be deterred by planting summer savory nearby.

What You Shouldn’t be Planting Next to Sweet Potatoes

The biggest problem with planting next to sweet potatoes is their propensity to spread. Because of this, one plant to avoid, in particular, when planting next to sweet potatoes is squash. Both are strong growers and fierce spreaders, and putting the two next to each other will only result in a fight for space in which both will likely be weakened. Even in the case of companion plants for sweet potatoes, be aware that your sweet potato vine will grow to cover a very large area, and take care that it doesn’t crowd out its beneficial neighbors."

  3. @davidnjoku

We humans eat them as swedes in Australia.

We have to as they provide some protection against irukandji jellyfish attack.*

The jellyfish bit isn't true. We wear pantyhose for that.

Our swedes are yellowish in the greengrocers. Our turnips are white.

Now, do you all enjoy parsnips?

TBH, that is a sentence that I never thought I would hear "in the wild".

  9. Gonna have a bumper crop of parsnip. This planter is tricky to grow most vegetables in. It gets sun in the spring, but the trees overhead shade it too much for most veggies in the summer. After a lot of experimentation, I discovered parsnips are happy here. There is one end of the planter that does get sun, and that's where I'm growing tomatillos this year. #gardening #parsnips

  11. Good morning humans! My #breakfast this morning is not only not-noodles - it's also #vegetarian! Fried up #mushrooms and #eggs, enjoying them over some leftover pureed root vegetables. Not the healthiest of vegetarian dishes, but probably better for me than bacon.

  13. I forgot to post this yesterday. Our first official seeds of 2024 are in! I planted lots of #parsnips yesterday!

I probably got too carried away, but that’s okay. It’s my garden ;)

  15. CW: Excessive food

It has become a tradition in our house to make something resembling a pizza with leftovers on boxing day.

Starting with a store-bought flatbread, add sausage meat stuffing, turkey, slice roast potatoes, sprouts, bacon, honey roasted carrot and parsnips then top with cheese (and potato crispy bits if available) and bake until everything comes up to a reasonable temperature.

  17. I make a lot of soup. It’s one of my specialties. Here’s what I made tonight. It’s a bit of a pain in the ass, but worth it now and then. I used up all the parsnips I grew in my garden on this. seasonsandsuppers.ca/farm-to-t #Soup #Recipes #SoupRecipe #pears #parsnips

  19. The weather, work and other stuff has really hampered my #gardening this year and I fret and fret until everything is planted. Got a good chunk done this evening, just some lettuce greens to go into the back bed.

I just keep it very simple these days -

  21. Here's my trick for growing Parsnips. Two good thicknesses of damp kitchen roll in a plastic tray. Sprinkle some parsnip seed and put the whole thing in a plastic bag at the top of the airing cupboard. Check EVERY DAY. As soon as they show a small white shoot plant up individually into soil filled card tubes. Harden off and plant out into their final positions as soon as the root just appears at the bottom. You must not damage the growing root tip. #parsnips #allotment #GrowYourOwn

  22. I am pretty sure the four parsnips I have lovingly managed to grow this year should form a rock band. #Parsnips #GrowYourOwn #VegetableGardening
