These are Asian greens that we grow & harvest as needed, year round. They are put under light covers in the colder Winter months. I keep their bases well mulched during Winter & they do just fine.

Creamy Swiss Chard Gratin with Crispy Gnocchi 🍷

A riff on creamed spinach, this cheesy #gratin is studded with buttery toasted #gnocchi. Swiss #chard adds an earthy bite, while a duo of nutty #Gruyère and salty #Parmigiano-Reggiano brings richness and depth to the béchamel. Got #chard ?

This little bed was planted back in November and I fully expected them to not survive: they looked so small and frail next to the hakurei and daikon. Instead, they've been going nuts since early March; I can't use them up fast enough. Friday I'm going to recreate an old favorite, fish fillets wrapped in chard; it requires really large leaves to work, and I have those now.

When #risotto goes wrong … but so right!This #chard and broad bean risotto with air-fried courgette, should be vibrant GREEN! But when you blend cooked green and RED chard (coz that’s what we grew), you get BROWN sludge! 😅 But said sludge stirred into a shallot, garlic, wine, stock risotto base, the resulting taste was still utterly amazing. Strong earthiness of chard all but disappears but it’s silky smooth to eat and delicious. Non-vegans could add cheese if desired. #dinner #recipe #alttext

The #garden is in full summer swing mode: #cucumbers, Swiss #chard, #tomatoes, #zucchini squash, #aubergine, #beetroots and #beans and #peppers and lots of other veggies allow for shopping the garden for meals. Best time of the year probably.

The aubergines are tricky, the "Casper" variety produces white fruit that are small but full of seeds. Another variety does not produce any fruit yet, flowers are falling off. More salads and winter leek are waiting to be planted so I might substitute.

Today I stumbled upon an interesting (yet at times prejudiced) 1964 interview with Gypsy Queen 80-year-old Mrs Wells in her caravan.

"She is at the roadside near Chard in Somerset with her group. Mrs Wells has been queen for one year since her aunt died, and makes a living selling clothes pegs and paper flowers. The title of queen is bestowed upon the eldest female."

I cooked this mix of vegetables as I usually do, and with many of the ingredients I often use. But I've not had rainbow chard recently, and this bunch was very fresh and large. Garlic stems are also not often available.

@DavidPB I usually put #Chard in the ground (direct sown) when the #BroadBeans come out this month. It germinates quickly and you can still be harvesting it into early December in the south of England. #allotment #growyourown

We like#rhubarb so much we gave it some protection from the frost #allotment #growyourown #veg, Enviromesh wont work as well as fleece for this but it does help enough I've learnt I also used it to get my #chard through the winter, the difference between the exposed and covered is very noticeable
