I watched a Tarantula Hawk (Pepsis Wasp) exploring our patio recently. Their sting can be extremely painful—described by the Schmidt Pain Index as "Blinding, fierce, shockingly electric. A running hair dryer has just been dropped into your bubble bath." 😱

Time for some shameless self-promotion: my new gig with Professor Chris Fluke at the #SmartSAT CRC at the Swinburne Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing, via an #ANAT Bespoke Residency. I'm the #sciartist-in-residence for 6 months, looking at using Unreal Engine for #XR development using near-real-time multi- and #hyperspectral satellite data, machine learning and human-computer interaction. I've made #Fulldome movies about #DarkMatter and #AboriginalSonglines, and experiment with novel types of #ImmersiveMedia and #HCI for #Museum and #GLAM applications. By night my magpie interests range across #Astrodon to #ml and #CognitiveNeuroscience, #Mathstodon #Consilience #Literature #Philosophy - I read a lot.
