A little issue. (I’m not saying there are no “LLM fanatics” or ideologues)
But the war-of-religion-inducing word here is “fan”
You seem to have no trouble distinguishing:
- faith
- frequency of use
- enthusiast
- advocate
- supporter
- proponent
- die-hard
- expert
- intermediate
- novice
- ceo
...So why collapse all of that into “fan”?
That word smuggles in too much. My point of viewI like the reasonable distance taken by #codeberg and #mathematician in the domain of automatic theorem proving
They do not totally condemn usage while at the same time warning and even distancing themselves from embracing the technology mindlessly
I think their position is super acute as it bypass the questioning about intellectual property: open source and mathematical knowledge are less prone to money induced issues and what could be labelled as "steal" or "ruthless copy"
Some mathematicians have asked for a moratorium on datacenters-led AI

Niels Abel was born 224 years ago, on August 5, 1802. At just 21, he proved that no general algebraic formula can solve equations of degree 5, a problem that had challenged mathematicians for roughly 250 years.
Short on money, Abel paid the printer himself and condensed his proof into just six pages to keep costs down. He sent a copy to Gauss, but never received a response.
Abel died of tuberculosis at just 26. Two days later, a letter arrived announcing that he had been appointed professor in Berlin.
A breakthrough recognized too late.

Happy birthday to #mathematician, aeronautical #engineer, philanthropist and Cherokee ‘hidden figure’ of the space race: Mary Golda Ross (1908-2008).
Great-great-granddaughter of Chief John Ross, who was forced to lead his people on the Trail of Tears, Ross attributed her success in math to the Cherokee tradition of encouraging equal education for boys and girls. 🧵1/https://minouette.etsy.com/listing/634592877

Happy birthday to trailblazing American computer scientist Frances Elizabeth Allen (1932 – 2020) who made foundational contributions to optimizing compilers, optimizing programs and parallel computing. She was the first woman to become an IBM Fellow, where she worked from 1957 to 2002 and as an emeritus fellow afterwards. She was the first woman to win the Turing Prize.

The #universe could have 18 possible shapes
Our universe appears flat—but this still leaves plenty of options for its true shape. In fact, our cosmos could resemble a donut
In 1934 #mathematician #WernerNowacki proved there are 18 different flat 3D shapes. If our universe is flat, then it has one of these 18 shapes. We can rule out some candidates because eight of 18 are “nonorientable.” That leaves 10 different forms that the universe can have.

Happy birthday to autodidact #mathematician Alicia Boole Stott (1860-1940), shown here with diagrams of cross-sections of 4D polytopes from her publications.
Alicia came to math honestly. Her father Prof George Boole developed Boolean logic, but died when she was 4. Her mother Mary Everest Boole was an autodidact mathematician & innovative math educator, who taught kids math through manipulation of objects.

Meton - Virtual Mechanical Moon and #Eclipse #Calculator
This awesome tool was created by prof. em. Thomas Weibel from Basel, Switzerland. Here is the beginning of the description from the website:
"The metonic cycle is a period of 19 years corresponding to almost exactly 235 synodic lunar months or full cycles of #moon phases, named after meton of athens, a greek #mathematician and #astronomer from the 5th century bc."
I love it :-)

Happy birthday to #mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani (1977-2017)! The Fields Medal, one of the most prestigious #math awards, is awarded to mathematicians < 40. In 2014, she became 1st woman to win. Her research included Teichmüller theory, hyperbolic geometry, ergodic theory, & symplectic geometry, and Fields committee cited her work in “the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces”.

Specifically, the way Cubism breaks from a single favoured perspective or absolute frame of reference & breaks down subjects into geometrical shapes from multiple points of view can be tied to advancements in non-Euclidian geometry in math & 🧵

Happy birthday to French mathematician, physicist and philosopher Marie-Sophie Germain (1776 – 1831), known as Sophie.
