Happy birthday to #mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani (1977-2017)! The Fields Medal, one of the most prestigious #math awards, is awarded to mathematicians < 40. In 2014, she became 1st woman to win. Her research included Teichmüller theory, hyperbolic geometry, ergodic theory, & symplectic geometry, and Fields committee cited her work in “the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces”.

Specifically, the way Cubism breaks from a single favoured perspective or absolute frame of reference & breaks down subjects into geometrical shapes from multiple points of view can be tied to advancements in non-Euclidian geometry in math & 🧵

Happy birthday to #mathematician Felix Klein (1849-1925). This is a hand-carved and hand-printed image of the famous mathematical object, the Klein bottle, printed in a gradient of pale yellow-green to darker blue-green on paper 8” by 8” (20.3 cm by 20.3 cm). First described by mathematician Felix Klein in 1882, this object has a single surface, rather like a 3D version of a Möbius strip. It is what is called a 🧵

Happy birthday to French mathematician, physicist and philosopher Marie-Sophie Germain (1776 – 1831), known as Sophie. She taught herself mathematics using books in her father’s library and by corresponding with leading mathematicians of her day, including Lagrange, Legendre and Gauss, initially using the pseudonym Monsieur LeBlanc. Her work on elasticity theory won her the grand prize from the Paris Academy of Sciences. 🧵

Happy birthday to Olga Ladyzhenskaya (1922-2004), a #mathematician who overcame personal tragedy, faced Soviet totalitarianism & the catastrophic political upheaval of the 20th century to make a huge impact on the math, making important contributions to study of partial differential equations (PDEs). Happy birthday to Gerardus Mercator (1512-1594) renown Flemish cartographer.
What made Mercator a great #cartographer, was in fact his abilities as a #mathematician -and like those of us scientists who feel compelled also to create art he was wasn’t hindered by his immense ability as an engraver. He produced beautiful world maps (a version of which is depicted in this print), 🧵1/

@rzeta0
The pronunciation of the names of Greek letters by native English speakers seems to be a matter of taste 🙂
In Britain, ϕ is normally 'fye' and π is 'pie', but linguistically I suspect that 'fee' and 'pee' make more sense.
Also, why do Americans pronounce β and ζ as 'bayda' and 'zayda'?!
Also, also, I believe Germans tend to pronounce ζ (et al) with a short 'e' sound (which feels kind of sensible) - i.e. 'zetta'.
What we need is a proper Greek #mathematician to tell us all how say them! -

Happy birthday to #mathematician David Hilbert (1862-1943)! Hey Sunday #mathematicians. I could use some help with something.
You have some number of people, say 20. They each sort some number of possible discussion topics, say 40, into four categories: Love to discuss (score of 4) like to discuss (3), sure, why not (2), and no thanks (0). You want to set up discussion groups of four. How do you assign unique people to the topics they most want to discuss?
