Great-great-granddaughter of Chief John Ross, who was forced to lead his people on the Trail of Tears, Ross attributed her success in math to the Cherokee tradition of encouraging equal education for boys and girls. 🧵1/

  7. Oh great, another article attempting to unravel the mysteries of #productivity, only to regale us with tales of a #Facebook engineer's legendary #hacks. 🙄 Apparently, if you want to be like Bob, all you need is a custom #Vim setup and the magical ability to transform #caffeine into code. ☕💻 Spoiler: productivity is still an illusion, but at least we got some sweet emoji usage out of it. 🙃

If you insist on laying dicks on the table, I also am a senior software engineer with 30 years experience and have been distributing multiple popular FOSS projects for >25 years.

And I still say there is no such thing as "responsible LLM use". Even if you don't care about the ethical issues - which I believe would, on its own, qualify someone as a low-grade sociopath - then the legal and environmental and social issues it brings up should put the final nail(s) in the coffin.

"But I'm using the slop machine well and wisely" is, in fact, "I like slop-coding, actually" rephrased so very, very slightly. And that means you failed the litmus test from my original post...

  13. An #engineer’s worth can be measured in many ways: years of licensure, number of graduate degrees, number of junior staff managed, number of successful product designs, number of units manufactured per annum, number of faults per a thousand operating hours, amount of revenue generated per annum, amount of savings attained per unit, etc.

But there is one very important engineering performance metric that is rarely discussed: number of successful #legal disputes (either on the plaintiff side or on the defendant side) in which the engineer was forced to participate, as a data purveyor, as a technical advisor, or as an expert witness. And this crucial skill is always acquired on-the-job, because it cannot be taught in a classroom.

  18. Another #charrsday post!

Recently I got another pic of my main Commander, Glitch, from CanisCappuccino(https://www.
    furaffinity.net/user/caniscappuccino/)

In this one, she's engaged in Commander things and making a full scale one-charr assault on an Inquest lab that has been up to some war crime shenanigans, backed by her jade sentry. She has its AI tied to her headset so she can give vocal commands to initiate pre-programmed attack sequences, or simply to keep it on-track if it starts to go after the wrong objective. This happens more often than you might think in battles without a single focus - just ask any experienced mechanist!

Also, as this was going to be a close quarters fight, she chose to bring her HOPE(Hylek Optimized Projectile Experiment) pistols to provide some added flexibility. In a more open or longer ranged battlefield, she instead might opt for her rifle, which I've yet to have her depicted with.

  20. Logic is a feeble reed, friend. "Logic" proved that airplanes can't fly and that H-bombs won't work and that stones don't fall out of the sky. Logic is a way of saying that anything which didn't happen yesterday won't happen tomorrow.

  21. Roman Cherniakhivsky studied to become a surveying #engineer. Yet, in that profession, he hasn’t worked a day in his life. Instead, while working as a bartender in #Kyiv, he noticed there were no companies delivering high quality ice on demand.

  22. Today's emailed job listing matches [1] included "Temporary dishwasher", if you're interested in how the software engineering sector of the economy is going.

[1] I don't think this really counts as a "match", but their system is configured such that it has to send *some* kind of results for all active searches each day, so ...

  23. Me: My bank changed their online banking and the bill payment confirmation numbers are now like 30 digits long. It's a pain to write them down.

Them: Write them down? Why? You can just look at them in your account.

Me: The point of the confirmation numbers is in case the payment disappears from your account later. You can give them something to prove it happened, something for them to start looking for it from.

Them: You don't trust the bank to get things right?

    Me: I'm a software engineer.

Them: Shouldn't you trust them more, then?

Me: ha ha ha no. No no no no no no.

Today's Challenge: Fighting my #depression while battling a junior #engineer who wont do his job or engage when he is asked to engage, and I am just trying to get this kid out of #FailureToLaunch mode. I dunno, part of me thinks this guy is just living his life in permanent #NightmareMode (ala #Doom), and he makes all this shit difficult on purpose.

  25. @ukwaterways
Having had a brief chat with the #engineer we encountered who was checking the #tunnel portal, we proceeded up the long straight #track over the hill, passing two of the #construction shafts along the way.

Back in the 1770s, when the tunnel was built, you sank a shaft down to the level you wanted the canal to run at and then dug outwards in two directions until the tunnels met.
