  1. Have you ever heard of Evariste Galois?
He was a French mathematician who died at the age of 20 in a duel.
He founded Group Theory and the Galois Theory, but it took decades for other mathematicians to understand his concepts.

There is a wonderful book about him by astronomer Mario Livio: "The equation that could not be solved", highly recommended.

  2. Groups, Fields, and Galois: Part 1 | UCLA Extension

Dr. Michael Miller, a retired researcher at RAND, has been teaching upper level undergraduate/graduate level math courses for fun at UCLA Extension for over 50 years. This fall he'll be introducing the areas of groups, fields, and Galois theory from abstract algebra to those interested in abstract math: Groups, Fields, and Galois: Part 1. His intention is to do a follow-on class on Galois theory in the Winter which will use this class as a foundation. If you're in the Los Angeles area his […]

  3. Niels Abel was born 224 years ago, on August 5, 1802. At just 21, he proved that no general algebraic formula can solve equations of degree 5, a problem that had challenged mathematicians for roughly 250 years.

Short on money, Abel paid the printer himself and condensed his proof into just six pages to keep costs down. He sent a copy to Gauss, but never received a response.

Abel died of tuberculosis at just 26. Two days later, a letter arrived announcing that he had been appointed professor in Berlin.

    A breakthrough recognized too late.

  4. 🚨 Breaking news for math enthusiasts: a blog post on a *single* lemma from a 2023 textbook! 📚😴 Apparently, you need a PhD just to understand the introduction. But don’t worry, the Fundamental Theorem of Galois Theory itself isn’t explained here, because who needs the main course when you can have a crumb? 🥖🙄

  5. @deilann
Bouncing back on the subject, I took Artin's #GaloisTheory with me to #Benasque and I think on page 25 there is a complete discussion. As you said any #algebraicNumber, defined as a root of a real polynomial, can be seen as a root of a unique polynomial of lowest degree which is irreducible, i.e. not divisible by any other poly omial with coefficients in the base field.

The coefficient of the highest power needs to be 1, one should divide the contending polynomials by each other and evaluate at the shared root showing that, having the same degree, they have 0 polynomial ring division remainder so must be the same.

  6. I'm reading Artin's #GaloisTheory and I'm wondering if the #math exposition of the #matrix #determinant relying on homogeneity properties is related to the #BrunnMinkowski #inequality

I will check my handwritten notes when I'll be in Poland end of July but I remember that homogeneity played a role there.

This rambling is related to my struggle to understand the #BrascampLieb and #rearrangementInequality. Any hints much appreciated 🥹😅🙈😊

  7. #maths #GaloisTheory #OU - Donald Rumsfeld said "There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know." I thought what a pratt. I am currently doing a course on Galois Theory & now realise that this is all about getting from what don't know I don't know to where I can say these are things that I know that I don't know
