  1. Happy birthday to #entomologist Margaret Fountaine (1862-1940), here in my #linocut with many #butterflies from her collection.

Her posthumous books featured her “wild and fearless life,” but she was also a trailblazing famous #Victorian #lepidopterist, published in The Entomologist’s Record and Journal of Variations, expert on tropical butterflies, discovering, documenting, breeding & gathering 🧵

  7. Happy birthday to founder of modern nursing, social reformer, statistician, data visualization innovator and writer Florence Nightingale (1820 – 1910)!
Nightingale earned the nickname “The Lady with the Lamp” during the Crimean War, from a phrase used by The Times, describing her as a “ministering angel” making her solitary rounds of the hospital at night with “a little lamp in her hand”. 🧵1/

  21. Happy birthday to astrophysicist Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (1900-1979), a trailblazer for women in #astronomy who discovered that hydrogen and helium are the most common elements in the universe.

Born England, she won a scholarship to Newnham College at Cambridge in 1919 where she heard a lecture which changed her life. She wrote, “My world had been so shaken that I experienced something very like 🧵

  27. Ever look at your scrap paper and think, oh that looks pretty… this is totally just a mask for my multicoloured portrait* and a piece of paper on which I was cleaning excess ink off brayers.

*I printed my key block in black of my astronomer portrait and then cut out the shape so I could flip it over and use it to mask out areas I don’t want to get orange ink on them.

  28. So the #artist Alexander #Calder (known for his mobiles) apparently also liked the #circus and designed a series of small circus acts (sword swallower, belly dancer, lion tamer, trapeze artists, elephants…) out of wire, wood, fabric and other materials. He then invited friends over to watch the show. His wife Louisa was in charge of background music on the record player. m.youtube.com/watch?v=t6jwnu8I

I particularly liked the #linocut poster for his circus. Exhibited at the #FondationLouisVuitton.

  36. This is one of a series, each unique, of my hand made cyanotypes on watercolour paper (14” x 11”) with an image of a cloud-filled sky overprinted with my linocut print of several kites, and wind-socks each collaged with beautiful Japanese washi papers.

The carp-shaped Koinobori wind socks (also known as satsuki-nobori) are flown in Japan to celebrate Tango no sekku, or Children’s Day each May 5.

  41. Sometimes she has two tails, or a fishtail or wings. There are different versions of her name and various stories are found in different regions especially France, Luxembourg and the Low Countries. I first learned of her from Manuel Mujica Láinez’s The Wandering Unicorn, which tells her story through the centuries. Her story also appears in A.S. Byatt’s Possession amongst many other places from operas to video games. 🧵2/2
