All of this is to say that I don't miss the loss of Star Trek because for me, Star Trek died a long time ago.
I hope it returns one day, but only if it can do so with its original vision and structure in mind.

There was a recent Steve Shives episode about the Cold War and how Star Trek's Federation reflected how the US saw itself, at least at it's ideological best.
I always felt that classic Dr. Who's Timelords reflected the way the UK saw itself as well. The Timelords were a powerful empire on the decline and The Doctor reflected its rebellion and also its self-reflection. A theme of UK culture in the 1960s was about identity, and Dr. Who reflected that, while also giving a bit of escapism.
So in that way we might see modern Trek as a reflection of the way that American society does not see itself in the same way. It's not unified, aspirational, and its idea of diversity and acceptance is superficial, while competence and adulthood are not culturally celebrated attributes.
Yet a show like The Orville was able to present some of these same conflicts without losing the core optimism that Star Trek had at its core.

The Puppet episode reminded me a bit of the Community claymation Christmas episode, but that was also in service of an idea (no spoilers for those who haven't seen it).
The third issue is that Star Trek had characters who were excellent, or as some people put it "Competence Porn". The characters were professionals who were excellent at what they did and modeled that excellence.
The struggles with external decisions or threats, or even with internal challenges was always grounded by the fact that you had confidence in the crew's technical and interpersonal abilities, which is something that Starfleet selected for and fostered. These were adults working in an adult workplace. New Trek has grown up children acting like children.
Even the characters themselves were reflections of a larger theme or idea, sometimetimes to a fault, where I feel like New Trek lacked that intentionality.

I've had a lot of trouble explaining why I don't like "New Trek", especially to younger folks who didn't grow up watching the series.
I'm still figuring that out exactly, but I have three core ideas.
The first is that Star Trek was largely built around the idea of an idealistic future. By the time TNG came on the air, Roddenberry had concluded that his vision for the future was ultimately a humanist one- and while I don't agree with the sterility of that vision, it was ultimately an optimistic vision.
The other is that Star Trek used its plots to explore ideas, whereas later Trek used either interpersonal conflict or "gimmick of the week". Strange New World's latest "puppet episode" where everyone gets turned into puppets is the latest version of that.
TNG had weird/wacky episode like the "The crew gets turned into children" episode, but that was in service of the idea of the ways in which the characters dealt with childhood.

Overall TV theme music is too articulated these days. Tries too hard. Consider #DoctorWho as an example. The modern orchestral versions are all fine and dandy, but completely lack the timeless suspense of the original. It’s kind of a pity #RussellTDavies is bringing #MurrayGold back. A fine composer, but it means there will be limited renewal. I would love for an analogue electronic #DrWho theme to make a comeback. Maybe even electronic incidentals.

With #DavidTennant back in as #TheDoctor (at least initially) and #MurrayGold coming back to score, it feels like new #DrWho will just be more of old #DoctorWho. Again, Gold did a great job with many scores, but I’d prefer to hear something fresh and different. While I didn’t appreciate a lot of #Chinall’s output, I liked #SegunAgnola’s take on the theme and some of the incidentals. How about having #AmonTobin or #TrentReznor or something funky like #DJShadow! More electronic music please :)
