Many think #banks are #neutral (for it's #speculation? investment into #war? #paying for what #profits most devastating in a short time?) and it isn't #moral actually passing through those hands full of #bad actors (#immoral #investments) and growing what #fucks people best and #sucks most out of them.

  8. @markhburton I feel like we could all talk about #money and #banks more often ?

Banks are not neutral and money is root of all #evil / pays for it / enables others to take the good money (all money passing through #rich people's hands) and use it for very #unhelpful things in life...

It's like the authors have discovered that Android developers have too much free time on their hands and decided to remedy that with an avalanche of technical jargon. Thanks, Filament! 🎉🔧

  12. The above is only strictly true for “small” amplitudes. If the #pendulum is subject to large amplitudes, it is no longer governed by the simple linear differential equations alluded to above. Given that the rod remains rigid and no energy is dissipated, the pendulum #equations may still be solved exactly, though they are now #nonlinear.

  18. A cycloidal pendulum - one suspended from the cusp of an inverted cycloid - is isochronous, meaning its period is constant regardless of the amplitude of the swing. Please find the proof using energy methods: Lagrange's equations (in the images attached to the reply).

    Background:
The standard pendulum period of \(2\pi\sqrt{L/g}\) or frequency \(\sqrt{g/L}\) holds only for small oscillations. The frequency becomes smaller as the amplitude grows. If you want to build a pendulum whose frequency is independent of the amplitude, you should hang it from the cusp of a cycloid of a certain size, as shown in the gif. As the string wraps partially around the cycloid, the effect decreases the length of the string in the air, increasing the frequency back up to a constant value.

    In more detail:
A cycloid is the path taken by a point on the rim of a rolling wheel. The upside-down cycloid in the gif can be parameterized by \((x, y)=R(\theta-\sin\theta, -1+\cos\theta)\), where \(\theta=0\) corresponds to the cusp. Consider a pendulum of length \(L=4R\) hanging from the cusp, and let \(\alpha\) be the angle the string makes with the vertical, as shown (in the proof).

Most of us learn the equation for a circle: (x-a)² + (y-b)² = r². But how many of you learned an equation for a square? Just need some absolute value trickery: |(x−a) + (y−b)| + |(x−a) − (y−b)| = r.

I like to include equations in the margins or on the back when I print my math-art, and admit I had to look this one up. This is another vector field image, very similar to the one I posted two days ago, but with the initial coordinates on a square.

News in #Australia piss me off when they refer to stuff as #AI ie tonight they where referring to the #Olympian beds for the upcoming #Olympics measurements are all done with #AI when the truth of it is if you weigh x amount and a height of y, you then get bed of xy bleh which can put into a table.

This the same as how they deal with the #BMI tripe that is all #mathematical #equations and #formulas

  27. > One of the central problems in fluid dynamics is to figure out if the [Euler] equations ever fail, outputting nonsensical values that render them unable to predict a fluid’s future states.
    > Mathematicians have long suspected that there exist initial conditions that cause the equations to break down. But they haven’t been able to prove it.
    > In a preprint posted online last month, a pair of mathematicians has shown that a particular version of the Euler equations does indeed sometimes fail.
    ...
    > Perhaps in some situations, the equations will proceed as expected, producing precise values for the state of the fluid at any given moment, only for one of those values to suddenly skyrocket to infinity. At that point, the Euler equations are said to give rise to a “singularity” — or, more dramatically, to “blow up.”
    > Once they hit that singularity, the equations will no longer be able to compute the fluid’s flow.
    ...
