I carry with me a large wooden barrel. It is worn, dented, aged.
It is the kind of barrel that has developed a personality, that rather than merely containing, imparts some of itself on others.
Perhaps it was a sherry cask, now used for aging whiskey, perhaps it wasn't. Hardened pearls of sap dot the surface, the metal rings that hold the planks together are pitted, bearing the marks of hand-tools.
I carry this barrel everywhere with me, it's heavy, but I never complain. This barrel is part of me as much. as the lungs in my chest or the thoughts in my brain.
I bear this barrel on my back, rest on it when I am tired, no matter where I go it comes with me.
Gaze into this barrel, have a look inside.

2 years ago this month, I tucked away a diamond that had adorned my ring finger for nearly 3 decades of a marriage. It took nearly all of those 2 years for the tan line & indentation to fade. So I've acquired a new ring. This one is a #NewYear affirmation of sorts. A reminder to give less #fucks but also more fucks.
