  6. Late autumn in the mountains of southern New Mexico.

Most aspen have dropped their leaves, but a few still hang onto golden glory.

Last night the high terrain of the mountains scraped some frozen precipitation out of passing clouds in the form of graupel (spongy hail). (There was absolutely no forecast for precipitation last night, but the mountains had other plans.)

  8. We've gone from days around -20C/-4F to +4 to +8C/39 to 46F still below freezing at night. Not exactly spring, but out of sight the trees will soon be getting ready for #Spring activity- like these #catkins from last spring (not an early one, this was May 01). #Aspen catkins are cute and fluffy, but #BalsamPoplar ! Some of the most beautiful #flowers of the year (before they fully open is the best time).

  10. #Pando

In the Wasatch Mountains of the western US on the slopes above a spring-fed lake, there dwells a single giant organism that provides an entire ecosystem on which plants and animals have relied for thousands of years.

"Pando" is a 106-acre stand of quaking aspen clones.
