  1. @jalefkowit That reminds me of this piece by Ars’ resident meteorologist who wrote that Americans in hurricane prone areas should (and often do) rely on the European forecast model and not the American one.

And that was before the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts moved to Bologna and got their new supercomputers.

Apple MPS. 8.

  10. #ECMWF website returns #403forbidden when trying to access it from #China. Since few months ago. There is a good reason for it I am sure. But I could not fathom which one since China is a #WMO member.

Problem easily fixed with a VPN or by being back in Europe. I find it odd anyway.

  11. Congratulations to Irina Sandu on her appointment as Deputy Director General & Director of Science and Innovation at #ECMWF. Over the years, we've had the honor of working with Irina on multiple occasions: She was a Humboldt fellow at #MPIM from 2008–2010, coordinated @nextgems_eu with our director, Bjorn Stevens, & is leading the Destination Earth initiative, in which we are involved.

Congratulations also to Jørn Kristiansen, who was appointed Deputy Director-General & Director of Forecasts!👏

  16. European State of the Climate 2025 report published

Warming is reducing #snow and #ice cover, while dangerously high surface air temperatures, #drought, and #heatwaves, as well as record-high #ocean temperatures, are affecting regions across the continent, from the #Arctic to the #Mediterranean. The result is increasing impacts – from record heatwaves over land and at sea, to devastating #wildfires, and accelerating #biodiversity loss – with consequences for #societies and #ecosystems across #Europe.

The #ESOTC report is produced by the #EU’s #Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), implemented by #ECMWF, and the World Meteorological Organization (#WMO), and brings together the work of around 100 scientific contributors.

  18. BIG news from #ECMWF: a portable version of our global forecasting model is now open source! Development of #IFS started in 1987 and just a year before entering its 4th decade it is now available to all.

This continues our journey that started a few years ago, when we made a first and growing number of several key model components available.

  23. Terrestrial Weather (comment)

A reminder that long-range weather forecasts are notoriously inaccurate!

Looking at just a single weather model output and stating as fact that this will be the outcome in 10 days' time is highly misleading. Certain "tabloid" publishers in the UK (you know who I mean) will week after week will try to tell you that the worst snowmaggeddon in centuries is about to happen in your neighbourhood.

In reality, even forecasts 2-3 days ahead can be wildly wrong. If the "ensemble" of weather models run on supercomputers which provide their outputs every few hours tend to agree on a scenario, then forecasters will be confident. If the ensembles disagree, then there will be low confidence.

So with all this in mind, the current model runs for the UK are showing some fairly wild disagreements on air pressure in the next two weeks, although a wet and windy regime is more likely than not. ECMWF (the European model) is predicting a deep low pressure area crossing the UK on around 13 Dec. The other models do not predict it, so it's very unlikely to occur. The same model run tomorrow may not predict it at all.

Whatever happens, it looks pretty impressive on the chart!
