ESA pubblica le prime immagini di MTG-S1

Le prime immagini riprese dal satellite Meteosat Third Generation-Sounder (MTG-S), sono state rilasciate all’European Space Conference di Bruxelles, conclusasi recentemente. Esse dimostrano le potenzialità della missione nel fornire dati su temperature e umidità, per la formulazione di previsioni meteorologiche più accurate sull’Europa e l’Africa settentrionale.

Le immagini dell’MTG-S mostrano il disco completo della Terra visto dall’orbita geostazionaria, a circa 36.000 chilometri dalla superficie terrestre. Le riprese risalgono al 15 dicembre 2025 e sono state effettuate dallo strumento Infrared Sounder.

Le temperature

Per realizzare l’immagine seguente, Infrared Sounder ha utilizzato un canale infrarosso a onde lunghe, con il quale ha misurato la temperatura della superficie del pianeta oltre a quelle della parte sommitale delle nubi. La scala cromatica che varia dal blu al rosso è rappresentativa del gradiente termico. La legenda colori indica rispettivamente le zone più fredde, come la parte superiore delle nuvole, e le regioni più calde del globo.

Come ci si aspetterebbe, il continente africano e la regione dell’America meridionale sono luoghi dove si registrano le temperature maggiori. Nella parte centrale e superiore dell’immagine, il profilo della costa occidentale africana è chiaramente riconoscibile, con la Penisola di Capo Verde e Dakar, la capitale del Senegal, visibile tra le zone più calde in rosso scuro. Nella parte inferiore destra spiccano dello stesso colore la costa occidentale della Namibia e il Sudafrica, al di sotto di un vortice di nuvole ritratto in colore blu. Inoltre, , nella parte sinistra dell’immagine, si evince come anche la fascia costiera nordorientale del Brasile è una regione tipicamente calda.

L’umidità

L’immagine seguente, dove non sono visibili i contorni delle masse continentali, è stata catturata tramite il canale infrarosso ad onde medie dell’Infrared Sounder, che misura il grado di umidità presente nell’atmosfera terrestre. I colori della famiglia del blu corrispondono a regioni con tassi di umidità più alti, mentre i colori relativi al rosso corrispondono ad aree più secche.

Le porzioni di atmosfera meno umide, colorate di rosso, sono situate approssimativamente sopra il deserto del Sahara e il medio Oriente, in alto nell’immagine. Inoltre un’ampia area di atmosfera secca copre anche parte dell’Oceano Atlantico meridionale (al centro). Numerose regioni con elevata umidità sono evidenziate in blu scuro corrispondenti alla parte orientale del continente africano, nonché alle alte e basse latitudini.

Sull’Europa

Qui sotto è possibile osservare un primo piano del continente europeo e di parte dell’Africa settentrionale, ripreso dal satellite. Come nella prima immagine di questo articolo, qui è rappresentato il calore irraggiato dal suolo e dalla parte superiore delle nubi. Si nota il margine del continente africano in rosso nella parte inferiore dell’immagine, mentre un fronte meteorologico in blu scuro copre sia Spagna e Portogallo che la regione balcanica. La nostra penisola si trova proprio al centro.

Nella seguente animazione, sono stati elaborati i dati dell’MTG-Sounder per seguire l’eruzione del vulcano Hayli Gubbi in Etiopia del 23 novembre 2025. Le immagini sullo sfondo mostrano i cambiamenti di temperatura superficiali, mentre i canali all’infrarosso evidenziano la formazione del pennacchio di ceneri. Le osservazioni tempestive da parte del satellite, consentono di monitorare l’evoluzione nel tempo del suddetto pennacchio.

Previsioni meteorologiche di nuova generazione

Quella di MTG è una missione di osservazione della Terra di livello mondiale, sviluppata dall’Agenzia spaziale europea (ESA) con partner industriali europei, per fornire dati rivoluzionari per le previsioni meteorologiche e della qualità dell’aria in tutta Europa.

La posizione orbitale geostazionaria al di sopra dell’equatore, permette al satellite di mantenersi in una posizione fissa sulla superficie terrestre, mentre il nostro pianeta ruota su sé stesso. Questa soluzione offre la copertura di tutta l’Europa e di parte del Nordafrica con un ciclo di ripetizione di 15 minuti. Il sistema fornisce nuovi dati sulla temperatura e l’umidità in Europa ogni 30 minuti, offrendo ai meteorologi un quadro completo della regione in esame e integrando i dati sulle nuvole e sulla formazione di fulmini provenienti dal satellite MTG-Imager (MTG-I).

Simonetta Cheli, Direttrice dei programmi di osservazione della Terra per l’ESA, ha dichiarato:

Vedere le prime immagini dell’Infrared Sounder del satellite MTG-Sounder dà davvero vita a questa missione e alle sue potenzialità. Ci aspettiamo che i dati provenienti da essa siano in grado di cambiare il modo in cui vengono previste le tempeste violente sopra l’Europa, e ciò è davvero entusiasmante per le comunità e i cittadini così come per i meteorologi e i climatologi. Come sempre, l’eccezionale lavoro svolto dai nostri team in collaborazione con i partner di lunga data, fra cui Eumetsat, la Commissione europea, e decine di team industriali europei, ci permette ora di prevedere gli eventi meteorologici estremi in modo più accurato e tempestivo che mai.

Una vista iperspettrale sull’Europa

Infrared Sounder a bordo dell’MTG-S è il primo strumento di rilevamento iperspettrale europeo in orbita geostazionaria. Esso è progettato per generare un tipo di dati completamente nuovo. Esso impiega tecniche interferometriche che gli permettono di analizzare delle minuscole strutture nelle onde luminose, per catturare dati sulla temperatura e sull’umidità, oltre a permettergli di misurare il vento e le tracce di gas atmosferici. Alla fine, i dati verranno usati per generare mappe tridimensionali dell’atmosfera, aiutando a migliorare l’accuratezza delle previsioni meteorologiche, in particolare per le previsioni a breve termine di tempeste in rapida evoluzione.

Sono entusiasta di poter condividere queste prime immagini dell’Infrared Sounder, le quali mostrano solo una piccola porzione dei 1.700 canali infrarossi acquisiti continuativamente dallo strumento. Combinando i segnali di tutti e 1.700 canali, saremo presto in grado di generare mappe tridimensionali di temperatura, di umidità e persino tracciare di gas nell’atmosfera. Questa capacità offrirà una prospettiva completamente nuova sull’atmosfera terrestre, finora non disponibile in Europa, e dovrebbe aiutare i meteorologi a prevedere le tempeste violente con maggiore anticipo rispetto a quanto sia possibile oggi

Il programma MTG

La costellazione dei satelliti MTG è composta da sei unità: quattro MTG-I e due MTG-S. Il programma MTG al momento conta due satelliti operativi: MTG-I (lanciato il 13 dicembre 2022) e MTG-S (messo in orbita il 1o luglio 2025). Più tardi, nel corso del 2026, il secondo MTG-I si unirà alla flotta in orbita.

Thales Alenia Space è l’appaltatore principale per il programma MTG, mentre OHB Systems è responsabile del satellite MTG-Sounder. Il controllo della missione e la distribuzione dei dati sono affidati a Eumetsat. Il satellite MTG-S ospita anche la missione Copernicus Sentinel-4, che consiste in uno spettrometro per immagini in ultravioletto, visibile ed infrarosso.
