🪱 NEW: Researchers in #Vienna found that the jaws of the ragworm 'Perinereis cultrifera' are made of #proteins bonded with metal ions including #zinc, producing a #material hard like metal yet elastic like #polymer.
Other bristle #worms swim backwards without turning, see in #ultraviolet, and detach rear ends that swim to the surface to spawn.

🕷 NEW: On an Australian #research expedition, marine biologist Jérôme Mallefet tested thousands of deep-sea specimens for light production in a darkroom aboard a research vessel.
Two giant sea #spider species, Colossendeis tasmanica and C. minor, glowed along the undersides of their legs when chemically stimulated. The researchers suspect the trait may be borrowed from #anemones the spiders eat, or used to find #prey.

"#Tomopterids are #pelagic #polycheates (segmented #worms) with paddle-like parapodia that propel them through the water column... They are voracious #predators, using their speed and agility to capture and consume a variety of midwater organisms... Tomopterids are one of a few organisms observed spewing yellow bioluminescent mucous"
