Giant #Antarctic #SeaSpiders reproductive mystery solved https://phys.org/news/2024-02-giant-antarctic-sea-spiders-reproductive.html
Spawning and larval development of Colossendeis megalonyx, a giant Antarctic sea spider: Amy Moran et al. https://esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ecy.4258
"To their amazement, 2 different mating groups produced thousands of tiny eggs. Instead of carrying the babies until they hatched, as in most species, one parent spent two days attaching the eggs to the rocky bottom where they developed for several months before hatching"

#paleontology #fossils #Jurassic #Pycnogonids #SeaSpiders
An article published in the journal "Papers in Palaeontology" reports the results of an examination of rare fossils of so-called sea spiders dating back to about 160 million years ago, during the Jurassic period. A team of researchers examined these fossils of marine arthropods which technically belong to the class of Pycnogonids (Pycnogonida).

New insights into the sea spider fauna (#Arthropoda, Pycnogonida) of La Voulte-sur-Rhône, France (#Jurassic, Callovian) https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/spp2.1515
"#SeaSpiders (#Pycnogonida), are a group of #marine #animals that is overall very poorly studied. However, they are very interesting to understand the #evolution of #arthropods as they appeared relatively early in the #arthropod tree of life."
