The Juxtaposition of Light
These tiny insects create light through a chemical reaction involving luciferin and oxygen. It is nearly 100% efficient light, meaning almost no energy is lost as heat. It’s a miracle of organic chemistry occurring right at our feet.

Il giardino delle stelle
Among rows of blooming lavender, the air filled with fragrance, fireflies appeared like small lanterns beneath a sky dominated by the summer Milky Way, a perfect meeting between the wonders of Earth and the night sky above.

Basalees are slime creatures often found within forests and other biomes with high tree density. Because of this, they prefer to sleep in groups or on stumps. Fireflies sometimes float around them as the glows of their souls seems to make them feel safe, as basalees sleep deeper in the forest. This one in particular found a nice flat stump to sleep on with it's glow coating the nearby nature.
I needed to draw more of my Basalees, they're my cute slime race that I made to have my own slimes. I knew I wanted to make one of them sleep, but why not do it animated. This was my first time doing animation in CSP and it was more challenging understanding the software and how it worked more than anything. Once I got the hang of it, the sleeping basalee came to life! Having it sort of shift and slump is a happy accident that made it feel more slime-like. The animation feels rather soothing in the end too, as comforting as the sleeping basalee itself.

Seeing fewer #fireflies this year? Here’s why, and how you can help.
Fireflies are vulnerable to #ClimateChange and habitat loss. Some simple landscaping tricks and turning off porch lights can make a big difference.
This coverage is made possible through a partnership between #Grist and #BPR, a #PublicRadio station serving western #NorthCarolina.
Katie Myers Regional Reporter, #Appalachia, July 11, 2025
Excerpt: "Basham and Jacobs have a few other tips for helping fireflies thrive. You don’t need to be a scientist to help protect fireflies. In fact, the biggest difference comes from how we care for our own #backyards. Here are a few things Basham and Jacobs recommend:
- Turn off your #PorchLights. Fireflies are incredibly sensitive to #ArtificialLight, and it can confuse them.
- Ditch the manicured lawn and embrace #NativePlants. In addition to being easier to care for, they suit the local environment and conserve water.
- Leave some leaves behind when you rake in the fall. They’re a great place for fireflies to find food, stay cool, and lay eggs.
- Plant shrubs, tufting grasses, and other, large plants. These can shelter fireflies during rainstorms and other severe weather.
- If you spot fireflies, jot down when and where you saw them and add your observations to citizen science databases like iNaturalist, Firefly Watch, or Firefly Atlas to help scientists collect data."Even among those who study fireflies, the thrill of spotting them remains magical. Lower has made many excursions to the southern #AppalachianMountains to find the famous, ethereal 'blue ghosts.' Rather than flicker, the insects emit a continuous bluish-green glow. 'You walk into the pitch black woods and at first you can’t really see anything right because your eyes are getting used to the darkness,' Lower said. 'But eventually you start to see all these dim glows.' "

The crisis for #butterflies is part of a troubling downturn in the number of #bumblebees, #fireflies & other #insects that has been observed in Europe, the Caribbean & other places worldwide. It could signal a potential “#bugpocalypse” that scientists are fiercely debating — a shift that may spell trouble for both #nature & #society.

"You won’t be happy with me, but give me one more chance. You won’t be happy anyway"
Ever listen to this band, @zombiewarrior ?
I dunno. Lyrics are kinda like... someone talking in their sleep. It's like, it's starts to make sense. But then, that next idea sort of related to the previous one. or now, what the heck is he talking about? haha. I think this is a cover, actually.
i wonder if @ipstenu is familier w/ the orig (see #LGBTQ supported in the credits of the original artist? Check it! https://youtu.be/OKXkVUM4xu8?si=GWcVvkHQJCYi6yih ) .
i seriously don't know. i'm not really gay so I don't quite get that part of why it's good. i mean, i get it, but it doesn't land with me perhaps as it might on another, but now i'm curious (cause of comments there).
I'm only familiar w/ the #SuperChunk album, and fans prob not familiar w/ the orig (at least I wasn't till this moment, in fact).

Why you should tell your children about vanishing #fireflies
I’ll be telling my son stories about the wild lives that existed in the places we go before anyone thought to call them “Maine” or “California.” If he won’t inherit an ecosystem with all its parts, he’ll have a shot at reassembly.
Advice by Michael J. Coren, August 29, 2023
"The #PenobscotNation is among the oldest continuous governments in the world. Some of its members still recall stories of Atlantic salmon filling #Maine’s rivers and of alewife, or river herring, swimming upriver by the uncounted millions, says Chuck Loring Jr., the Penobscot Nation’s director of natural resources. Last year, fewer than 1,400 salmon returned to the state.
"Loring, who manages forests, game and fisheries across 121,000 acres, doesn’t think in decades in his work. He looks back centuries. 'We have a seven-generation approach,' he says. Unlike most commercial timber harvesters, he’s aiming to create an old-growth forest like those that existed hundreds of years ago across Maine but now cover only 0.05 percent of the state.
"Instead of cutting trees every 30 to 40 years, Loring plans to grow them for a century or more. And he’s not optimizing for wood. 'We’re one of the biggest timber tribes,' says Loring, 'but the most highly regarded goal is water quality.'
"For the #Penobscot, the goal is restoring a landscape and its inhabitants’ place in it — from fish to moose to future members of the Penobscot Nation. 'That’s one of our goals getting into the school, and talking about everything we do,' says Loring. 'The tribe has made ensuring a viable forest in the future the priority, even if we’re not generating income from the forest.'
