A creative choice in this reworked series, as compared to the original versions published in 2014, was to use vignetting to pull and push the image forwards and backwards. That's especially pronounced in images like this, where there's a strong opposition between full and empty on each side of the photo.

Heron's Head Park, yesterday, 3:41 p.m.
So here's a new twist on a bridge I've photographed many times before. This time out, I used a tripod and a variable 10-stop ND filter mounted to a sharp, smooth turning 24-105mm lens. With the ND filter set to maximum darkness and the camera at ISO 100 and f/22, I was able to take a long, 10-second exposure in bright daylight.
For the first 5 seconds of the exposure, the lens remained at 24mm to establish a solid image of the bridge. During the last 5 seconds of the exposure, I zoomed the lens out to the max to create the light streaks.
Et voilà. That's French for oh cool.

Camera's relatively still at the peak of a corner, and all the movement is in the competitors. A third factor in these images, is another photographer running big strobes, so there's light-painted frozen moments in my long exposures.
