  1. Why I Had to Call It “The Zero Point of Narcissism” To understand the “Zero Point,” you must first understand the edifice it confronts. Kohut’s framework is elegant and powerful. It explains so much about our lifelong hunger for validation, our crushing experiences of narcissistic injury, and our fragile self-esteem. #Amirroring #Aphantasia #DevelopmentalPsychology #Consciousness #Autopoiesis #ZeroPointOfNarcissism cristinagherghel.substack.com/

  2. What if a foundational piece of developmental psychology is based on a blind spot?
For decades, the field has operated on a core, unchallenged axiom: that every human self is built through the mirror of another's gaze and emotion. But what happens when that mirror is absent from the very beginning—not broken, but never held up? #Amirroring #Aphantasia #DevelopmentalPsychology #Consciousness #Autopoiesis #ZeroPointOfNarcissism zenodo.org/records/17857386

  3. That's the macro, reductive view, which is not the whole story, ofc. We're "designed" to sexually reproduce by a code that evolved from an earlier design that was sexless. We also evolved to modify our behavior in order to optimize our population (reproduce) - itself an extension of #autopoiesis.

Self-organizing systems are characterized by their intrinsic, nonlinear operators, (i.e., the properties of their constituent elements, macromolecules, spores of the slime mold, bees, etc.), which generate macroscopically (meta-) stable patterns maintained by the perpetual flux of their constituents. A special case of #self_organization is #autopoiesis. It is that organization which is its own Eigen-state: the outcome of the productive interactions of the components of the system are those very components. It is the organization of the #living, and, at the same time, the organization of #autonomy.

    ...matter for #AI?
Because #Autopoiesis answers the question of the necessary and sufficient prerequisites for *living* systems.

Prof. Albert #Scherr, in his article:

    ph-freiburg.de/fileadmin/share

…writes the following (p.6), which, though the article is not intended for an application in #ArtificialIntelligence , IMO would explain why #LLM’s will reach a learning frontier that only embodiment, i.e. #robotics, will solve:
    “On the one..."

...If you check the prerequisites for #autopoietic systems (as developed by #Varela), we might reach the conclusion that #AGI is already quite close to #Autopoiesis.
    (Note:
The late #NiklasLuhmann is 1 of the most difficult authors to read and his works are chiefly available in German; I haven't studied him in a long time, so I cannot apply his whole concept to #AI, of which I also do not enough of).
    Why does #Autopoiesis + #SocialSystemsTheory..

  13. I think Maturana may have “jumped the gun” here by succumbing to the cybernetic #control vs. #controlled type of thinking and using a gun (a mere passive #product or #structure) as a metaphor for an active, living #system.

In my mind, the notion of external control so pervasive in #cybernetics does not fit well with the notions of #autopoiesis and #constructivism.

Unlike a (living) system, the gun has no other #choice but to react to the trigger, except, as Maturana notes, in case of malfunction (which is not equivalent to choice).

  14. @pj All of that are just "illustrations" of "living". #Living systems are alive. Fine! What do we need the term #autopoiesis for? Answer: We do not need it.

  15. @nielspflaeging

Of course you can't do anything with it. It is #autopoiesis. It is doing things onto itself like #growing and #learning. 😉

  16. Autopoiesis. A beautiful word.
    And an utterly superfluous one.
You cannot do anything useful with it.
The word "living" is entirely sufficient. So forget about autopoiesis and work on living systems, making them "even more alive!"

  17. Control in #Cybernetics always has to come from the outside or is exerted, not internally onto the elements that make the system but onto something else outside of the “control” system.

Even such brilliant thinkers as #FJ_Varela, one of the “fathers” of #autopoiesis could not escape this profoundly ingrained “cybernetic” assumption:

#Autonomy means, literally, self-law. To see what this entails, it is easier to contrast it with its mirror image, #allonomy or external law. This is, of course, what we call #control. These two images, autonomy and control, do a continuous dance.”

  18. The natural history of systems which exhibit #autonomy as a characteristic phenomenology shows that they share one universal feature suggested by #autopoiesis: organizational closure, i.e. indefinite recursion of component interaction.

    (ibid. p79)

  19. Reading this recent (2022) article from Fritjof Capra:
    The organization of the living:
    Maturana’s key insights
included in the latest Constructivist Foundations volume 18(1): 005–011

and I am continually bewildered by the fact that no one in the #Constructivist field figured out yet that #Autopoiesis, although necessary, is not the sufficient condition for #Life.

All #LivingSystems are in fact #DynamicalSystems with memory made of #Material, #Energy, and #Information structures participating continually in both auto- and allopoietic processes.

In fact, the recursive, #Autopoietic processes of learning and growth depend only on (are “structurally coupled” with) the linear #Allopoietic work processes dealing with all the things (resources, waste) in the system’s environment and producing the externally observable #behavior of the living (dynamical) system.
