I now have definitive written proof of a numeric indexing system (delineated in a popular textbook for secretaries, and published by a company which did significant business in Germany) from the mid-1920s with increasingly more detail into the 1940s and a fifth edition published in 1950. It’s exactly like, but notably predates, Niklas Luhmann’s alphanumeric system which he started in 1952. I’ll write up some of the details shortly with specific references, but thought I’d tease it here a bit first. -
Did Niklas Luhmann write in English? I'm seeing some articles listed as being authored by him without a translator listed:

I've started reading some interviews with #NiklasLuhmann - maybe I'll start reading some of his sociological theories. I find the orthogonal German-ness of his statements striking, there are lots of abstractions that he, according to his own words, applies in order to keep his theoretical constructs valid, e.g., independent of moral positions.
Many other approaches come to my mind for dealing with our reality - and also the gaps if anyone tries to deduce anything the Luhmann way. #sociology

@ilyess organizing solely by folders as a form of categorization was avoided by Niklas Luhmann in his Zettelkasten, for example, it makes things complex when a note "belongs" to multiple categories.

(7/n)...If you check the prerequisites for #autopoietic systems (as developed by #Varela), we might reach the conclusion that #AGI is already quite close to #Autopoiesis.
(Note:
The late #NiklasLuhmann is 1 of the most difficult authors to read and his works are chiefly available in German; I haven't studied him in a long time, so I cannot apply his whole concept to #AI, of which I also do not enough of).

This paper by Jason Lustig on Gotthard Deutsch’s #zettelkasten was fascinating: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0952695119830900. While there’s an implication that its use didn’t make him as productive (from a writing perspective) as Niklas Luhmann or S.D. Goitein, I might suggest that it made him a more productive thinker and teacher, which in turn bore results in the form of his students who also picked up the practice from him.
