Brain Rot and Your IQ: What Science Actually Says About Screen Time, Social Media, and Intelligence
Henry David Thoreau coined “brain rot” in 1854 in Walden, writing about society’s preference for simple ideas over complex thought. The complaint maps remarkably well onto algorithmic content feeds 170 years later.

Is Gen Z Getting Dumber? What the IQ Data Actually Shows About the First Generation to Score Lower Than Their Parents
The Gen Z IQ story is not a story about a broken generation. It is a story about what happens when environments change faster than our understanding of what those environments are doing to cognition.

✨ Consciousness – the government spokesperson 📢 of our brain 🧠
In our #Zoomposium, #neuroscientist #GerhardRoth describes #consciousness as a kind of government spokesperson: it interprets and legitimizes #actions whose actual reasons lie in unconscious neural processes – processes to which we have no direct access.

How did human consciousness evolve? Neuroscientist Nikolay Kukushkin traces our sophisticated brains back to the first complex cells – Live Science
The evolution of life on Earth ‘almost predictably’ led to human intelligence, neuroscientist says
Interview, By Nicoletta Lanese, published 2 days ago
Neuroscientist Nikolay Kukushkin spoke to Live Science about how human consciousness evolved.
In “One Hand Clapping,” Nikolay Kukushkin traces the origin of human consciousness from the formation of the first genetic material on Earth. (Image credit: Andriy Onufriyenko via Getty Images)“Consciousness,” although challenging to define, can be thought of as a first-person awareness of one’s surroundings and oneself. You sense the world through your eyes, nose, ears and hands, and track your internal bodily states via interactions between your cells. These data streams collide to give rise to your personal perception of the world, your place within it, and your motivations for moving through it.
An enduring question about consciousness is how this state of awareness comes about. Is consciousness simply the result of a bunch of chemical reactions? Or is there some extra “secret ingredient”?
In the book “One Hand Clapping: Unraveling the Mystery of the Human Mind” (Prometheus/Swift Press, 2025), New York University neuroscientist Nikolay Kukushkin explores these questions. To do so, he traces the evolutionary history of human consciousness from the formation of Earth’s first DNA molecules to present-day Homo sapiens. Kukushkin studies memory in non-brain biological systems, such as human kidney cells, as well as in simple organisms such as sea slugs. He also considers himself a “molecular philosopher.”

@elduvelle We are a #neuroscience lab and I consider myself a #neuroscientist. We do both #Ephys and #CalciumImaging in the lab, but I don't do it myself personally–I wish. At least I do some of the software programming, which I enjoy immensely.

Hello world! #introduction #twittermigration
I am a #neuroscientist interested in how signals flow through neural circuits to generate behavior. I study #motorcontrol in adult #Drosophila where powerful tools are letting us move steadily toward a mechanistic understanding of #computation in neural circuits.
I spent my PhD doing EM and X-ray #connectomics (#FANC) and I'm now doing in vivo activity recordings for my #postdoc. After this, I hope to start my own lab.
And my Mastodon era begins!

Hi,
I am a #physicist and #neuroscientist who tries to bring both fields together in #neuroimaging.
I direct the Dept of Neurophysics at the #MPI for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences (https://www.cbs.mpg.de/en). Our main tools are #MRI, #histology and #biophysical #modeling for in-vivo histology (#hMRI) and ultra-high resolution #fMRI.
Excited to see #MastodonScience growing so quickly 😀

I'm a #developmental #cognitive #neuroscientist with a focus on #visual and social/affective #cognition in #infancy 🧠 👶
How do infants come to understand complex visual objects, such as for social/affective communication - e.g. #faces?
How do infants' #brains learn to represent & interpret the visual, social/affective world? 👀
To answer these, I use #neuroimaging (#EEG/#fNIRS), #behavior, & #computational tools 🧠 🤖

Hi folks! Here is my #introductionpost. I am a #neuroscientist & #psychiatrist based in NYC. I started a lab at Columbia in 2021 focused on how #stress disrupts the #brain #circuits that govern social, cognitive & reward seeking #behavior. We use #electrophysiology & #optogenetics in freely moving mice to study how dynamic #neural activity, eg, #oscillations yield insight into #susceptibility #resilience #anhedonia & new treatments. I also post about #cooking. #twitterMigration #NeuroMastodons

Figured I'd do another #introduction since I changed servers and lost all my posts :(
I'm a #neuroscientist with an interest in #striatum, #movementDisorders and #substanceUse. #electropgysiologist currently teaching #neuroscience and #biology to undergrads and #psychology to grad students.
Hobbies include #gaming (digital like #leagueOfLegends and #DarkSouls ) but also tabletop rpgs and #boardgames
Hi all! Looking to find more #neuro folks to share interesting discoveries and recent pubs.

Well this is exciting... my #introduction: I am a #psychiatrist and #neuroscientist at #UCL studying #psychosis and #schizophrenia mainly - I use #computationalpsychiatry methods to try to infer neurobiological changes from brain imaging data, and also to understand how cognitive processes going awry could lead to symptoms like delusions and hallucinations. I'm also interested in so-called #functionalsymptoms, #AI, #OCD, #machinelearning, #activeinference and lots of arty stuff too...

I'm a #neuroscientist at #Oxford and my group investigates neural circuits relating to spatial #memory, especially in the #thalamus.
Previous research includes defining #GABAergic #neurons in the #hippocampus and medial septum by recording and labelling them in vivo.
We also want to understand the earliest changes in the human #brain that lead to the build up of pathological #Tau proteins, which correlate with #cognitive decline.
Nice to have joined Mastodon -
Time for an #introduction:
I am an associate professor at the #MoffittCancerCenter in Florida. My group #CancerEvo and I are interested in #CancerEvolution and #CancerEcology and how those impact the #evolution of #cancer #resistance to #treatment. We do that by working very closely with cancer #biologists and clinicians using #math #mathonco models.I am also married to the lovely @pbiwan.
