For this purpose I would like to describe first of all the initial problem in the #Darwinian #theory of evolution, which can be regarded as an example of the "#underdetermination of #empirical theories by the #evidence" (Bas van Fraassen).

5️⃣ #Functions: the #Control-ed #Reaction to external stimuli, the #Perception of sensory states, the #Prediction of the expected outcome of past behavior, and the repeated #Integration of new information into an updated knowledge state.
The thought experiment in this interesting 2019 article from Michael Lachmann and Sara Walker on the contrast between #life and #living is not representative, because von Neumann’s UCs are non-#autopoietic and don’t print themselves so can’t #grow and #evolve.
Imagine you have built a sophisticated 3D printer called Alice, the first to be able to print itself. As with von Neumann’s constructor, you supply it with information specifying its own plan, and a mechanism for copying that information: Alice is now a complete von Neumann constructor. Have you created new life on Earth?

The difference lies in the fact that UC “mechanisms” are not operational until their production is fully finished and any #error will most probably prevent the mechanism from working, while most living and growing “assemblies” can work and repair themselves while they are growing.
The bottom line is that life cannot be created. It has to emerge from mechanical non-life.
Yes, that was the beginning.
And the more I read, the more I am convinced that we will not have to wait for the next decade to see #autopoietic systems capable of self-reference and -development.
My gut feeling from what I have read (and studied of the former) natural-language learning and how infants learn to "grasp reality", is that this will happen very swiftly when we let even only a couple of #robots, connected...

...If you check the prerequisites for #autopoietic systems (as developed by #Varela), we might reach the conclusion that #GAI is already quite close to #Autopoiesis.
(Note:
The late #NiklasLuhmann is 1 of the most difficult authors to read and his works are chiefly available in German; I haven't studied him in a long time, so I cannot apply his whole concept to #AI, of which I also do not enough of).

One key point coming very soon is #embodiment of AI in #automatic #autopoietic systems, systems that have needs and take care of themselves.
We may think we don’t want to do that, because when you have that, all the components intellect like ours needs to rise exist
But we might still create sex robots, setting a path for emergence of that.

The main difference between “man-made” machines and other simple physical #structures (#products) and #autonomous, living #systems is in the way they are “produced”.
Machines are #built from the #outside by an #allopoietic process similar to #sedimentation of placing layer upon layer of “things” and connecting them to “inform” a unified single structure.
Organisms, on the other side, are single unified and integrated entities from the moment of their inception, and all their “components” #grow from the #inside out in parallel and at the same time in a closed circular #autopoietic process.

and I am continually bewildered by the fact that no one in the #Constructivist field figured out yet that #Autopoiesis, although necessary, is not the sufficient condition for #Life.
All #LivingSystems are in fact #DynamicalSystems with memory made of #Material, #Energy, and #Information structures participating continually in both auto- and allopoietic processes.
In fact, the recursive, #Autopoietic processes of learning and growth depend only on (are “structurally coupled” with) the linear #Allopoietic work processes dealing with all the things (resources, waste) in the system’s environment and producing the externally observable #behavior of the living (dynamical) system.
