  3. A body learning to walk without armour begins noticing things certainty tended to hurry past, until even the unfamiliar starts feeling less like a threat than an invitation to pay closer attention.

  5. A life no longer carrying yesterday's weight begins meeting tomorrow differently. The first thing that changes isn't the world outside you, but the quality of your next step.

  7. The most durable things don't look built — they look like they couldn't have been otherwise, like a life in right relationship becoming, one ordinary day at a time.

  8. "For 30 years, we've argued that #livingsystems are the foundation of all economic #value. The world listened — but then returned to quarterly returns.
    Something has changed.
Not the urgency. Not the moral argument. What's changed is the arrival of new instruments, new computational capacities, and a new #institutionalimagination.
    The window has opened."

  9. The world keeps offering itself through weight, texture, weather and time, and the stories that separate us from it often dissolve the moment our hands have something real to do.

  10. Neighbouring trees draw water through different roots and still feed the same forest, leaving the patient observer with fewer certainties and a much larger world to inhabit.

  11. The old story doesn't break — it just keeps failing the test of what's actually happening, until the gap itself becomes the teacher.

  12. The oldest knowledge often lands as something almost impossible to notice because it's never stopped being true: the ground keeps answering whatever relationship we bring to it.

  13. The work that keeps a place alive has always been more interested in participation than consensus, which is why shared necessity teaches a deeper belonging that shared certainty never quite opens into.

  14. What returns after certainty falls away isn't an answer but a different quality of attention, and the familiar world begins revealing itself as something that was never ordinary.

  15. What falls away with certainty isn't necessarily direction, because living systems have always moved through conditions they couldn't predict, a momentum toward life that precedes explanation.

  16. What falls away first is often the illusion that understanding and belonging are the same thing, because the world continues inviting participation long after it has exhausted explanation.

  17. Written at the threshold of 2017, this reflection asks whether becoming resolved begins not with adding another layer of certainty, but with letting one fall away.

  18. What the gift economy, the mycorrhizal network, the watershed, and the migratory bird have in common is that none of them ever mistook themselves for separate — and the experiment the Lifeboat Academy asks us to live is, at its root, the same one: to stop mistaking ourselves for separate, and feel what's already holding us.

  19. The gift has always moved between living things without requiring a theory of generosity to do so — and what loosens in a person who receives something unearned isn't gratitude exactly, but the slow release of a story about the world that was never quite true.

  20. On the infrastructure that makes conscience legible

"No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it."

I keep returning to Edgar Mitchell’s account of his return from the moon — looking back at Earth from beyond its sphere of influence, he found himself overwhelmed by an inner conviction as certain as any equation he’d ever solved: that this beautiful blue world is part of a living system, harmonious and whole, and that we all participate in a universe of consciousness.

Mitchell was a trained engineer and astronaut, not predisposed to mysticism. But something about the impossible perspective broke the Cartesian spell. He came home and spent the rest of his life trying to reconcile the difference between what he’d experienced and what the institutions of his world were capable of understanding.

How do we reconcile the parallax of perception from a distance, to the shortsighted view of global machinations at ground level...

  21. Most of us were never asked where the landscape needed us — not in the career-advice sense but in the older sense, the bodily sense, of finding where in the web of relations you're woven from and discovering that the shape of your particular presence is what's been missing.
