Fuck yeah, got the mix right on the chantilly this time! It's no longer too thick! 😁😋
This Irish Coffee is the bomb. Wonderfully slurpable soup of chantilly on top. Demerara sugar as the main sweetener of the coffee itself. (I also threw in some Torani hazelnut syrup this time, just for fun.) Loads of Tullamore Dew.
All in all, it's a beautiful combination of caffeine and alcohol to excite and disinhibit my brain for writing. Sláinte!
🇮🇪☕😋

Just wanted to show something interesting/neat:
The one article on the blog that actually is doing any numbers at all is me recounting the story of how Terry Pratchett changed his German language publisher because they put soup ads into his books and wouldn’t promise not to do it again.
It gets linked mostly by reddit every few months. This time it was Diane Duane (who herself had books where Heyne added soup ads in the middle) who linked to my blog, causing a visitor increase of a cool 1026%.
Of course nobody ever actually comments or reads anything else (except maybe that short post where I wrote that PTerry died).
Such is the life of the niche blogger I guess.
Of course it might help if I actually posted more often. Oh well.

CW: Weird stuff in a specific canned soup
Has anyone else had issues with Progresso cream of mushroom soup having mushrooms with sand in them that's gritty and nasty tasting? My mom has had this problem multiple times recently and I was wondering how widespread it is.

Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989) – Review
By the end of the 80s, Studio Ghibli was cooking, creatively speaking, but was still finding it tough to get the appropriate amount of traction at the box office. While disscussing something as crass as money when dealing with the type of creative alchemy that have given audiences back to back movies that casually enriched the soul, the simple fact of the matter is, Ghibli was still in its relative infancy and anime had yet to make that relentless, worldwide breakout that still wouldn’t occur for a few couple of years yet. However, with Kiki’s Delivery Service, the studio would finally enjoy financial success to go with the fact that in under a decade, they’d been doling out straight-up masterpieces while other animation houses (cough * Disney * cough) had noticably struggled during the decade.
Let’s not forget that Ghibli released both My Neighbour Totoro and Grave Of The Fireflies in the same year, a feat that showed the emotional dexterity of filmmakers who delivered polar opposite assaults on our emotional well-being. But what did it take to help the house of Totoro get flush? Nothing much, just a thirteen year-old witch and a flying broom. In a world where witches live alongside humans in harmony despite being relatively rare, we meet Kiki, a thirteen year-old girl who decides its time for her to attempt the tradition all witches her age must do – leave home and live an independent life for a year. While that seems a little much to ask any child, Kiki not only is kind and resourceful, but she has the ability to soar through the sky on her broom and has Jiji, her feline familiar, to keep her company. However, after leaving home she soon encounters a number of minor obstacles such as another, pretentious witch and a rain storm that causes her to first drift off course and then take refuge in a box car until the rain chooses to relent.
However, upon waking up, Kiki finds that she and Jiji have arrived in the city of Koriko and decides to stay and try to make a life for herself – but while she’s enamored of the view of the ocean that she has, her small town upbringing leaves her unprepared for how tough life and lonely can be in a bustling city. Still, the plucky child manages to find a place to live with a kindly woman and her husband who own a bakery and so figures out how to channel her paranormal talents into a form of self employment.
Using her talents of flying on her broomstick, Kiki starts up her own small scale delivery service as she can simply zip across the sky with a parcel and drop it off at it’s destination in no time at all. However, despite the kindness of a lot of her early customers and the constant attention of a local boy named Tombo, Kiki soon finds that forging a life in a big city can be fairly trying and as isolation and depression sets in, she finds that some of her witchy gifts are starting to leave her as the day to day pressures take their toll. The irony of Ghibli’s first financially successful film being about a thirteen year-old going out and starting her own business isn’t lost on me, but there was always a danger that anything that attempted to follow Isao Takahata’s emotion-flaying Grave Of The Fireflies was going to come across as unbelievably twee – after all, the lethally sad wartime drama had been repeatedly hailed as one of the greatest animated movies ever made and proved to be an unforgettable experience. However, the magic of Hayao Miyazaki is that he’s able to benevolently weaponise things that are ridiculously nice in ways that make even the most basic plots warm your heart. For example, on the surface, My Neighbour Totoro wasn’t really about anything really and just followed the lives of two young girls who were excited about moving house and casually had low-energy adventures with a burly, sleepy forest spirit. And yet, despite having no antagonist, no jokes and no action sequences to speak of, Miyazaki turned such unassuming touch points into genuine chicken soup for the soul.
Well, with Kiki’s Delivery Service pulls off the same trick by adapting Eiko Kadono’s novel into yet another beguiling fantasy that, technically speaking, doesn’t fall back on the majority of animated tropes popular at the time. Once again, Miyazaki shrewdly tells another tale that not only proves that he accurately can put himself (and the viewer) in the shoes of a prepubescent girl encountering the world for the first time, but he impressively doesn’t make it creepy either. On top of this, the movie scatters numerous instances about the film that sees a lot of good advice and protection offered to Kiki by an arry of vastly different, but all equally strong women. From Osono the baker generously giving our heroine a place to stay, to the kindly old women who call Kiki to deliver pies baked with pure love to ungrateful grandchildren on their birthdays, to her encounter with jean-short wearing artist, Ursula who lives in the nearby forest, the young witch is given countless life advice by strong mature women to counteract the rather cold and vapid reaction she gets from girls her own age.Once again, detailing how rich and glorious the animation is is now starting to feel somewhat redundant, but I’ll still say that no one in animation can animate grass blowing on a strong breeze quite like the hard working scribblers who work under the Ghibli umbrella – and if that looks good, imagine how good the flying stuff looks. Yep, Miyazaki’s documented weakness for all things that fly gets yet another outing, although its amusing that for all the high flying heroines that’s populated his films, Kiki has moments where her broom flying is actually quite ungainly due to external forces or the fact that has to improvise at one moment with a brush.
But for all the dazzling wonder and memorable characters (Jiji the sassy cat is effortlessly the movie’s MVP), once again it’s those deftly buried life lessons that hit the hardest and while Kiki finds that the confidence sapping effects of modern life is draining her powers as depression set in, it’s remarkable that Miyazaki’s simple message of being true to yourself is delivered so organically when other animation houses would probably base an entire six minute musical number about it. Most remarkable of all is the fact that I would argue that Kiki’s Delivery Service actually does low-key fantasy and growing pains even better than My Neighbour Totoro did and while that final rescue sequence seems a little tacked on compared to how organic Ghibli usually is, it makes the likes of Sabrina The Teenage Witch look like purest trash in comparison.Zipping out from under the emotional heft of Grave Of The Fireflies with yet another delightful flight of fancy, Kiki’s Delivery Service not only cemented Ghibli’s standing at the box office, but delivered yet another overwhelmingly warm cinematic endevor to boot. While the titular witch may not have too many spells of her own, her movie spins more than enough magic to compensate.

I was trying out "Marina di Chioggia" squash from my garden for the first time today and I'm very pleased with results. It's a very firm and relatively dry variety of squash so I'm hoping they'll keep for a very long time just as they are, unprocessed. It is loaded with beta-carotene and has more sugars than your average squash and the taste is almost glazed carrots-like. In the dish I was making, a cream pumpkin soup, its cubed pulp is complemented with celery stalks and leaves, red onions, garlic, half and half, unsalted butter, black pepper and nutmeg.

CW: hypnokink, gaslighting (but fun)
something ive been playing around with lately is gaslighting-hypnosis. I:E, just telling someone they have a trigger, and chipping away at their doubt gradually, making them feel unsure about whether they really do have a trigger, telling them how easily I could have made them forget, summoning imagery of what it will look like when they act so confident and still feel the effects, and then using that imagery to make the effects actually happen.
*heavily* inspired by this one intensely hot scene from a kallidora rho story, i read it and just went "oh gods i need to do that to someone. i need to see them laugh at first and then watch as that 'but what if she really did' turns into a 'oh she definitely did, im fucked' in real time."
having experimented with it a little bit, it's not just incredibly hot, but pretty effective, and a way faster way to set up triggers than doing a full trance, at least if ive already built up the confidence to make it work. they seem to be a little bit weaker than a suggestion when someone is already deep in, but thats where reinforcement can come in.
anyway i convinced my girlfriend that she has a pleasure trigger that activates when i quote nanao's bread and water soup dialogue from robot alchemic drive

The Uncertainty Of It All, Heisenberg You Were Right

And then maître d’hôtel walks up to me
And asks “Tea?”
I say why not, and he who sees me

I know him better than he does me
He only knows that I take tea in the end
I know how much he earns,
How long he has been working here
How old he is
He is still unmarried, etc.Now you are wondering,

I stepped on a banana peel
With a little bit of its pulp inside
I almost fall, and let out
A mild gasp, either Oh My
Or Oh God, must have been Oh God
Because God is very much on my mind
For too long now, in fact so long
I keep remembering Samuel Beckett’s play
Not telling which play, look up
Do your homework, my God you guys are lazy
See how God has made his appearance again
But I digress, and upon hearing My God
The male of the couple behind me
Asked, “What happened Sir?”
By the time I look up
I find the girl/woman (his girlfriend or wife?)
Ahead of him by a few meters
He has lagged behind
Does that happen these days
The women outpacing we men
Anyway, I digress again,
So I point to the banana peel
And shrug and say,
“Can’t even sue anyone”
He gives a chuckle
Perhaps wondering
Suing? What’s going on?
And I add, maybe there’s a CC TV camera
He says unnecessarily, “Evidence”
And wanting to have the last word
I say, ‘Yeah, the smokin’ gun”,
And walk back to my apartment
“Shaken and stirred” (sorry, Bond). -

By the time I look up
I find the girl/woman (his girlfriend or wife?)
Ahead of him by a few meters
He has lagged behind
Does that happen these days
The women outpacing we men
Anyway, I digress again,
So I point to the banana peel
And shrug and say,
“Can’t even sue anyone”
He gives a chuckle
Perhaps wondering
Suing? What’s going on?
And I add, maybe there’s a CC TV camera
He says unnecessarily, “Evidence”
And wanting to have the last word
I say, ‘Yeah, the smokin’ gun”,
And walk back to my apartment
“Shaken and stirred” (sorry, Bond). -
The Uncertainty Of It All, Heisenberg You Were Right
As I walked out one evening,
Walking down Urdu Gulli
(I know friends are already suspecting
Since I was in 9th class
That I steal lines or wholesale,
So let me confess those two lines
Are mods of WH Auden’s poem
Not telling which poem
Do some homework).Returning from Minerva Coffee Shop
After Hot and Sour Soup
And Grilled Cheese Sandwich
With a few chips as garnishment
Waiters nowadays have become very caring
He asked me if I wanted more helping of chips
I smiled and pointed to my belly
He gave a hearty chuckle
This young guy who is in far better health
Of the body, not finances,
I ask him to get the bill,
And then maître d’hôtel walks up to me
And asks “Tea?”
I say why not, and he who sees me
At the coffee shop, alone, often,
I know him better than he does me
He only knows that I take tea in the end
I know how much he earns,
How long he has been working here
How old he is
He is still unmarried, etc.Now you are wondering,
Where is the uncertainty in this all buddy
All too predictable—the cheese sandwich—
You who are not exactly slim,
I start to protest I was once and stop
Realizing I have to justify the title,
Ok, read the last stanza. As I walked out one evening,
#AsIWalkedOutOneEvening #faith #Life #MinervaCoffeeShop #Poem #Poetry #Uncertainty #WHAuden #Writing
Walking back down Urdu Gulli,
I stepped on a banana peel
With a little bit of its pulp inside
I almost fall, and let out
A mild gasp, either Oh My
Or Oh God, must have been Oh God
Because God is very much on my mind
For too long now, in fact so long
I keep remembering Samuel Beckett’s play
Not telling which play, look up
Do your homework, my God you guys are lazy
See how God has made his appearance again
But I digress, and upon hearing My God
The male of the couple behind me
Asked, “What happened Sir?”
By the time I look up
I find the girl/woman (his girlfriend or wife?)
Ahead of him by a few meters
He has lagged behind
Does that happen these days

#Fundraiser: Hot meals 4 Starved #Palestinian Kids in north #Gaza
Update from by Hani Almadhoun, Organizer, April 2, 2024
"Hello and Salam,
Yesterday was an incredibly difficult day for many of us as we witnessed the harrowing events unfolding at Al Shifa Hospital and the subsequent targeting of humanitarian workers. It's truly heartbreaking to witness such cruelty in Gaza, yet we strive to maintain hope amidst these challenges. The reality of the situation hit me especially hard, particularly when speaking with our photographer, Eshak, who was deeply affected by the firsthand images he documented.
Additionally, at least two more organizations are suspending humanitarian operations inside Gaza due to safety concerns, including one that ran a soup kitchen in #Jabalya, not far from our location.
However, despite these adversities, I choose to focus on the positive impact we are making together for the families we serve in both the north and the south.
In the north, our kitchen continues to innovate with the available ingredients. This week, they've incorporated rice and canned beans into dishes like super stew, alongside beloved local favorites made from local produce. Despite the increased demand, our team works tirelessly to serve everyone, even distributing dates and lemons to those in need. Thanks to your generosity, Mahmoud was able to purchase 700 pounds of lemons to distribute, greatly appreciated for making juice for fasting neighbors.
In the city of #Rafah in the south of Gaza, our kitchen rotates between savory and sweet dishes, with rice pudding being a popular favorite. Today, they prepared veggies and pasta for the community.
Despite facing challenges such as high transfer fees and liquidity issues, we are grateful for your unwavering support, enabling us to continue providing essential assistance to those in need. We remain committed to ensuring patron satisfaction and minimizing wait times for the families we serve, who are already enduring desperate circumstances.
The attached pictures highlight the impactful work being done in both the north and the south, and we hope they convey our sincere gratitude for your support. Running these kitchens is no easy task, but every day, we overcome obstacles to stand in solidarity with those who need us most. Thank you for making this possible.
I know these are special days for many Muslims who observe the last ten days of Ramadan, so we want to ensure we make plans for Eid and remember the children.
P. S. We are now exploring the possibility of opening a third kitchen."

Day 3. Gums & dentures recovery update.
Had to leave voice-mail for my dentist. Woke up in searing pain, on both upper/lower on right side of mouth. The swelling in that area went up hella fast overnight - spreading past jawline & into my neck for lower area; its closing up right nostril for upper swelling. I'm having problems breathing properly & back to just liquid food this morning because lower swelling has affected my swallowing.
I'm feeling grumpy due to the pain & new difficulties related to fast swelling areas, described above. First mouth sore has developed on upper left side of mouth. I have a special medicated rinse for that👍
I'm happy about my pureed food & liquids this morning. Made by a friend nearby. #IndianFood. Tomato soup & salt lassi. First time having salt lassi - it's a yogurt based drink, with cumin, black salt & mint.

Experts working with the #FirstNation of #NaChoNyäkDun who have witnessed the fallout at #VictoriaGoldEagle mine near #Mayo, #Yukon, say systems on-site are so severely compromised that damage to the land & water is all but inevitable.
What they describe is a system rendered mostly #inoperable, with each affected piece elevating #risks to the #environment — every day.
On June 24, part of the Eagle #mine failed and a massive #RockSlide involving roughly 4 million tonnes of material cleaved off a large piece of the facility where #gold is extracted from ore using a chemical process called cyanide heap leach. Estimates put the amount of ore stacked on the heap leach pad — which functions as a giant industrial percolator — at nearly 4 times what was lost in the slide.
With the #HeapLeach pad downed, experts say a #toxic soup of #SodiumCyanide & other #contaminants — up to 300,000 cubic metres of solution, according to the #YukonGovernment — was released in the initial slide. Since then, they say, more of it has been draining.
The First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun has called the event "the region's most recent and potentially #catastrophic #mining failure."

Dear lovely Lovely Peeps,
If you have a moment, I recommend today's Love Letter - To A Little Clay Bowl by Sarah Gailey.
It is about stability, fragility, and back again. It is about recognition. About being *seen*. About talent and the roles we (are to) play. About trust. About nourishment. About community. And about joy.
It is a beautiful wee essay, and as someone who has her own version of A Little Clay Bowl, it resonates strongly. 🥰
This is part of a series, some written by Sarah, some by guest writers. Donations are appreciated, but they are all free to read.
From the website:
"Love Letters: Reasons to Be Alive is a yearlong essay series in which we acknowledge, celebrate, and examine the objects and experiences that keep us going, even through the hardest of times. The series is free to read, for everyone, forever.
If you'd like to support the work of the team that makes this series and keeps Stone Soup running, you can subscribe here for as little as $1 per month, or you can drop a one-time donation into the tip jar.
In the meantime, remember: Do what you can. Care for yourself and the people around you. Believe that the world can be better than it is now. Never give up."

Stone… Err, Knife Soup 2 of 2
#Fanfic #WanderingWitch
#Wss366 redolent“Now for the first ingredient,” I said as I looked about for a stone. What met my eyes were cobblestones filthy with cow manure. That would never do. Even I wouldn’t eat something made with such a foul ingredient.
I quickly opened my bag and produced… “A knife the fairies gave me,” I said. “It was used to cut the heavenly fruit served to Queen Mauve. In acknowledgment, she blessed it with the property to infuse broth with the most wonderful flavors.”
"But alas, it will just be broth—flavorful, nutritious, but thin," I said, dropping the knife into the pot with a flourish and stirred the water. "If only we had a few potatoes."
A thin woman nudged the man next to her, whispering something in his ear.
He nodded, ran off, and soon reappeared with a few potatoes. “Been saving them, just in case. But if you can feed us all, then it’s worth it.”
I took the potatoes and frowned. My knife was in the pot. "Can someone lend me a knife?"
A boy soon produced one, and the potatoes went into the pot, skin and all.
“It’s a shame,” I said. “A good potato soup requires carrots, but this will be filling even without them.”
Another farmer ran off, and soon, I had a bunch of carrots, which also went into the broth.
“Perhaps someone has some leeks or onions,” I said. “Oh, what a wonderful stew it would be with just a few.”
As before, I soon had my ingredients, as well as a head of cabbage, mushrooms, and a rutabaga.
I took a sip. "Wonderful! The flavors imparted by the knife blend so well with your ingredients. It needs only one more thing.”
I made a show of checking my robes, revealing empty pockets. “The fairies took off with my salt and pepper. What is soup without those?” They might as well take the blame, I thought, for lack of spices.
Several people turned on a man who was slightly better dressed than the rest, and I do mean slightly. “Well, Mayor?” they demanded.
“Yes, yes, of course,” he said and headed off, soon to reappear with the requested items.
“I have some rosemary,” a young woman approached, offering me a sprig.
“And I have sage,” someone else said, thrusting it into my hands.
“Mm, this smells good,” I said, adding the seasoning. Indeed, the air was #redolent with the savory smell of soup.
Taking one last stir, I announced: "It should be ready by the time someone fetches bowls."
And as for me, belly full, I was content. I scooped up my knife, saying, “Your generosity fills my heart with gladness. There will be no need to erect a monument to me,” and left town.
And who was this fabulous cook? This modest genius? A procurer of ingredients from thin air and thinner peasants?
It was I, Elaina, the Wandering Witch!

Last time (see parent post) the tourists actually recommended the spicy pork bone soup, but considering that scraping meat take time (and eating it otherwise is ugly in public), this time I ordered spicy tofu soup instead (rice is included but not pictured).
上次(请见上文)两个游客给我推荐的是麻辣猪骨汤,不过考虑到把肉刮下来耗时耗力(直接啃又多不检点呀),这次就点了麻辣豆腐汤(有饭,没拍出来)。
