  1. As a semi-normal, semi-sane person, I've always viewed 3½" floppies with the label end being the top.

So much so that it didn't click until a few years ago that the weird "CH" logo was actually... HD inverted. 🤦

Today, I'm archiving and scanning disks, and what do I notice? LOOK WHAT APPLE DID.

Wait, was that common? Did I overlook it all this time? No, I flipped through hundreds of disks, and this is the ONLY one I have with the HD right-side up!

  5. Composition with floppies, using two different kind of fills: cross hatching and BenDay dots.

CMYK on 11”x15” watercolor paper using a vintage HP 7585B pen plotter generated and controlled with Python.

  7. Heyo all.
Regarding retro gaming again, some of my favorite ones were for ms dos. These include shareware only games too! So, some of them were Mechwarrior 2, I spent more time customizing mechs than actually playing the game, and would often listen to soundtrack on a cd player too!

Other ms dos games of note, include wolfenstein 3d, I made levels and edited sprites in that game as a kid.

Doom of course too, fooled around with modding for it briefly and now I just play levels i find on doomworld and zdoom sites.

Stunts, a fun racing game where you could make your own courses. So much fun!

Quake, also endless levels and modding.

Monuments of mars, fun little 2d platformer.

Descent 1 and 2, great 6 degrees of freedom shooter. Played it online against friends a lot.

Duke nukem 3d. Infamous, but the level editing for it was so easy to do and game itself was pretty fun, especially playing with and against friends online!

Commander keen. Fun little platformer as well.

Skyroads. Great f zero style game!

Corncob 3d. Fun flight sim, you could even get out of the plane and walk wherever on foot.

MegatronVGA. Mech game where you fought mechs in a maze.

Sango fighter, fun street fighter clone.

One must fall 2097, great street fighter clone with awesome music.

    Epic pinball, fun pinball game!

    Lemmings, great puzzle game.

Stellar 7 and nova 9, battlezone style games that actually had a plot and powerups you could activate and hidden warps and other fun things.

I played all these games and more on a Radio Shack Tandy 1000. Great machine!

  9. Ubuntu Linux 25.10 gets a rusty sudo, Firefox 144 learns how to profile, Cambridge wants to save the floppy disk, and DIY one-handed typing with Keyer.

  11. If an organisation was big enough, they could buy floppies that were branded with that company's logo.

These floppies though, are showing their age. Telecom Australia in case you're wondering, became Telstra when it was privatised. Floppy disk labels aren't the only thing coming un-stuck there.

  13. Burning floppies is hard. I tought my USB drives started to die. Turns our it's just wild and old tech.

Long story short, I finally found the working command:

    sudo dd if=floppy.img of=/dev/sdX bs=512 conv=notrunc,sync,fsync oflag=direct status=progress

This is the slowest but most stable way so far.

  15. @eay @storytracer @netzpolitik_feed

A tiny bit, #PunInPlainSight, off topic, but I did use a lot of those depicted 1.44 mb floppies.
I'm so old, I even used 720 kb REAL #FLOPPIES.
Then, mid nineties, came the Zipdrive, which was kind of a computer storage revolution.
It started with "floppies" of 100 mb. Wow! Who needs that much room on a Wordperfect file carrying thingy?...

  16. Did you know that many USB #floppy drives can’t read 720 KB #floppies? Well, I know it now. 🤬

The most annoying part is that the read/write head could read those floppies just fine. It’s just the silly #firmware of the external drive that messes things up!

  17. Found a stack of old #floppies while searching for a lost radio charger, including some #ThrustMaster software. --Wait, No! It's not what you think!

  19. It is kind of amusing that 6/21 consider the floppy's shutter to be the top, and 15/21 consider it to be the bottom.

This is kind of extra funny because the "HD" text on the HD floppies is now upside down on most, but not all.

What even is "up" on a floppy.

  21. Managed to get all of the #floppies #archived! It is very satisfying to see them all in a row like that!

  22. What is interesting is that the last new floppy manufactured was in 2011! That means that, so far, manufacturing of #floppy drives has continued for at least a decade longer than #floppies themselves!

  25. Well, that was unexpected. DeepL Write corrected "GNOME disks" to "GNOME floppies" 😂

  26. So, researching the story of the somewhat bizare story of 5 1/4 #floppies still being used on San Francisco trains:

    arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/0

Can any of you #retro folks tell me if a floppy emulator would help here, like a GoTek, is such a thing possible for 5 1/4” disks?

    Boosts appreciated!
