@inlovewithpda Using a mix of #palemoon, #firefoxesr, #bravebrowser, #vivaldiBrowser, and #torbrowser, depending on the context.
The one and only browser suitable for everything does not exist. -
@utopify_org @janvlug @thibaultamartin
Screenshot of #SignalDesktop I took last year on #Librem5.Regarding browsers, the default #FirefoxESR does not need any zooming in, and neither does #GnomeWeb, #Kumo or #AngelFish. On #BraveBrowser, I zoom in 125%.
Btw, being able to use desktop apps on #LinuxMobile is generally considered one of its advantages!

OK, so it looks like #FirefoxESR 115.33 will be the last #Firefox compatible with #Windows7, #Windows8, #macOS 10.12, macOS 10.13, and macOS 10.14.
A milestone release that will say "Farewell"… 😭

Helppo asennus Linux Mintissä
Firefox ESR ei kuulu Mintin virallisiin ohjelmistolähteisiin, mutta Mozilla tarjoaa tällaisia tilanteita varten oman lisäohjelmistolähteen. Yleensä ohjelmistolähteitä ei kannata itse lisätä kevyin perustein, koska käyttöjärjestelmän vikaantumisen riski päivitysten ja pakettien asennuksen yhteydessä kasvaa. Lisäksi itse lisätyn ohjelmistolähteen ylläpitäjän on syytä olla hyvin luotettava taho, joka huolehtii tietoturvasta asiallisesti.
Asennus tapahtuu Mintin Ohjelmistohallinta-sovelluksella, eli päätteeseen ei tarvitse koskea.
1. Ohjelmistohallinnassa avaa ikkunan oikeassa yläkulmassa oleva hampurilaisvalikko ja valitse Ohjelmalähteet.
2. Valitse avautuneen ikkunan vasemmasta reunasta kohta Varmennusavaimet ja paina alareunan Lataa-painiketta. Kopioi avautuvaan tekstikenttään seuraava tunniste ja paina OK:
35BAA0B33E9EB396F59CA838C0BA5CE6DC6315A3Avainlistaan pitäisi ilmestyä “Artifact Registry Repository Signer”, jolla on Googlen sähköpostiosoite.
3. Valitse ikkunan vasemmasta reunasta kohta Lisäohjelmistolähteet (ei PPA) ja paina alareudan Lisää-painiketta. Kopioi tai kirjoita avautuvaan tekstikenttään seuraava teksti ja paina OK:
deb https ://packages.mozilla.org/apt mozilla main
(HUOM: poista välilyönti https jälkeen! Lisäsin välin, ettei Mastodon muuta tekstiä lyhennetyksi linkiksi.)4. Paina ikkunan oikean alakulman vihreää painiketta, jossa lukee: “Paina ja päivitä APT-välimuisti”. Sulje Ohjelmistolähteet-ikkuna.
5. Avaa jälleen Ohjelmistohallinan hampurilaisvalikko, mutta valitse tällä kertaa Päivitä pakettiluettelo. Sulje Ohjelmistohallinta ja avaa se uudelleen.
6. Kirjoita vasemman yläkulman hakukenttään firefox-esr, valitse löytynyt sovellus ja asenna se.
Nyt Mintin sovellusvalikko listaa kaksi Firefoxia Internet-osion alla.

I wonder if I should switch to using Firefox ESR on my personal computer. It might disrupt my workflows less, since it doesn't constantly update with new features that I do not want. I'm so very particular about how I've set up my shit that it's aggravating every time an update breaks what I'm used to - so much so that I am now actively avoiding updating my Firefox. 😑
Any insight? I'm on Windows desktop. (And yes, I know about alternate browsers and OSes, those are outside of the scope of my question, so please don't chime in with suggestions to switch.)

@ati1 @linmob Depends what the user wants from a personal device, how they use it and what their priorities are. If someone's priorities are a modern camera, running proprietary Android apps and their money is held hostage by banks requiring #Duopoly apps, they should check back later, perhaps when the Librem 5 "Fir" model is released.
On the other hand, if #FreeSoftware, #privacy, #modularity, #repairability, #ecofriendliness, #decentralisation, #digitalindependence, etc. are valued above other things, the Librem 5 and the higher-spec model, the #LibertyPhone, can absolutely work in 2025 and beyond.
I am daily driving a #Librem5 with #postmarketOS and everything important to me works: VoLTE calls and SMS (although I avoid them due to #SaltTyphoon), 4G data, Wi-Fi, camera with OK quality photos (see: #ShotOnLibrem5), GPS with #PureMaps, web browsing with #FirefoxESR, web apps (including banking) using #GNOMEWeb and #BraveBrowser, email using #Geary and #DeltaChat, audio calls on #SignalMessenger, #Matrix ( #ElementMessenger), #XMPP ( #DinoIM), #JitsiMeet, etc.
There are occasional bugs and quirks, and the device itself has limitations but nothing that I can't work around.
Not sure if I missed anything. Let me know if you have a specific use case that you absolutely require and I'll see if I can test...

CW: mobile-config-firefox, happiness, alpine
@linmob This was unexpected for me, ancient Debian Bullseye-based #PureOS Byzantium getting the latest #FirefoxESR long before comparatively bleeding-edge Alpine-based #postmarketOS. I've been checking it's packaging status in #Alpine 3.22 every few days!

🇺🇸 Since the last update of #FirefoxESR to version 140.0 on my Mac, I have to restart it at least once a day (in case someone doesn't know - on Mac, applications shouldn't be closed if you use them every day) because after waking from sleep mode, the browser has no internet. The issue is clearly with the browser, as there was no problem with earlier versions.

Having daily drive postmarketOS on my Pixel 3a, one feature I would like to see is to give desktop environments the ability to render it own custom right clicks menu interface.
Some of the app's right click menu (ex: Firefox ESR) are not touch friendly... You can't scroll through the menu options that are really large.
-
@thomask There aren't any intermediate versions of #firefoxesr between 115 and 128 (except for the point releases), so it's just a single version jump. Over the last few years, #debian has typically updated to the newest Firefox-esr version in Stable around the time the prior version reaches EOL.
Firefox-esr is one of the few packages in Debian Stable that gets a major version update during a release cycle.

Hmm 💭
Chrome —> Firefox, Safari, (Lynx :))
Lynx is absolutely rather safe when it comes to #privacy 😃 but Safari.... the rotten #able is collecting everything, just like Alphabet. Leaving #FirefoxESR on the second place as a lot of Tweaking to become privacy aware.
#Gmail —> protonmail, mail from someone like Mythic Beasts
#protonmail requires you confirm by phone number last time I tried to setup a dummy account
Search —> DuckDuckGo, #StartPage
DuckDuckGo 🤙 StartPage :thumbsdown_paw:
StartPage, is all about collecting data, they are not privacy orientated
nextcloud.com: https://0xacab.org/my-privacy-dns/matrix/-/issues/268926 (Tracking)startpage.com: https://0xacab.org/my-privacy-dns/matrix/-/issues/641606 (Tracking)duckduckgo.com: https://0xacab.org/my-privacy-dns/matrix/-/issues/10945
Have you thought about why they are using a com domain and not a org or net domain?
