Some time ago, I began this enormous thread about frequency restoration in acoustic recordings. (link for background/can be skipped)
https://www.reddit.com/r/OldOpera/comments/1oqgz2k/frequency_restoration_in_acoustic_recordings/
To make a very long story short, there is software that can do this, but ninety-nine percent of it is inaccessible with NVDA (my screen reader). The one program that is, Audacity, is far too complicated for me to understand. I found some sites with sliders, but even they didnt read out what they were, leaving me confused and annoyed. So after months of getting nowhere, I decided to write my own program. This is actually becoming quite popular in the blind community, so I thought why not try it? I named it Otello, both to honour Francesco Tamagno, the quality of whose recordings started me on this journey, and because I felt like some kind of a warrior while doing this. Below are some essential facts from the help file."***Important Notes
1. This program was made with Windows Forms and was written in C#. It was created with Perplexity. I myself am not a programmer and know nothing about code. However, I tested each and every feature before releasing this to you. So I know that it works and that it is safe.
2. This is a portable program. It will not be installed on your machine. Simply run Otello.exe and it will start. If you delete the folder, it's gone. However, it does require Microsoft .Net Framework 4.8, which can be downloaded from their site.
3. While this program was created with artificial intelligence, it is not used in the processing of the files. Otello is simply an equaliser. At best, it can help reveal features that exist in recordings which may be difficult to hear due to the original recording technology. It does not technically add anything to them. Therefore, it may work better on some types of recordings than others i.e. electric versus acoustic.***
===
System Requirements
This program works on Windows 7 and later, on both 32-bit and 64-bit systems. However, it was specifically made for Windows 7.
===
General Purpose
Otello is a simple, screen reader-accessible audio equaliser. It is designed so that anyone, including those with no knowledge of technical terms and frequency numbers (I'm among them), can use it to change the sound of recordings. If you've used the sliders on a stereo or the knobs on a mixer, this should be easy. If you're used to controling the sound on an original acoustic machine, you're a genius and this should be very easy!"Downloads (if the link doesn't work, I will re-upload it)

Stunning concept of redesigning my favourite Windows OS version, modernising Aero with Fluent Design 🤩

Just keep AI out of the UI and I'd be happy to use this, especially over Windows 10/11's UI 🙂↕️

Here are four very different subreddits that I created.
1.
Old Opera
This is a subreddit for those who love, or are even curious about, opera and its singers from the 1950's and earlier. Feel free to ask questions, share reviews and links, and discuss this wonderful genre of music and the singers and composers who brought it to life. Everyone, from beginners to experts, is welcome.https://www.reddit.com/r/OldOpera/
2.
Blind and Fine
If you want to join apositive subreddit for the blind, try r/BlindandFine. The subject matter is far less strict than at r/blind, since not everything needs to be related to blindness. This is more of a place where we can get to know each other and have fun. We allow sighted people to join as well, and we welcome questions about blindness if they are genuine, requests for feedback on surveys or technology about/for the blind, etc. However, I do ask that you join only if you are eighteen or older. Please also note that this is not a therapy/support group. If you need that, then r/blind is for you. I am not an administrator there, only of Blind and Fine.https://www.reddit.com/r/BlindAndFine/
3.
FrozenDinnerReviews
This is the place to talk about tv dinners and other frozen foods. Share opinions and recipes, ask questions, etc. If you must post pictures, please describe them or write a post containing text so that those of us who cannot see will know what it's about. Even something like "box of X brand pizza) is fine.https://www.reddit.com/r/FrozenDinnerReviews/
4.
EscargotFamily
This subreddit is for those who use the Escargot client to access Windows Live/MSN Messenger. This is a place where we can get to know each other and share contact information strictly for adding each other to Messenger (no real addresses, phone numbers, etc.). Please only join if you're over eighteen.https://www.reddit.com/r/EscargotFamily/

I sometimes have a problem with Firefox wherein it will refuse to open links from Thunderbird. It keeps asking me if I wish to refresh Firefox or run it in troubleshoot mode. I find this to be very annoying. I would like to make a portable version my ddefault broswer so that, when this starts, I can simply swap it with a working version instead of having to refresh, etc. How can I do this in Windows 7? I know it has to do with the registry, and I thought there was a premade script for it where all I would need to do would be to enter the location of the browser for it to work, but I can't find said script. Any help would be appreciated. Note: this could also be done with Supermium, thereby eliminating my issue with the inaccessible installer in the full version. Hence my accessibility and blind tags.

I realise that I could simply write to the developers of Supermium, but I wanted to ask those who are familiar with accessibility for help first. For a bit of background, I am switching from Windows 11 to 7. I will not debate this. The decision has been made and my primary machines are being upgraded with new drives and installations as I speak. I have an 11 machine if I absolutely need it, but it will not be used daily. Anyway, I primarily use Firefox, but sometimes, Supermium is better for certain things. This is a fork of Chrome that works with everything from XP through 11 and is updated often. The problem is that, unlike with Firefox, it doesn't save my passwords between portable versions. This is true of Chrome itself as well, even when logged into my account, and I have no idea why. Anyway, to avoid this, I would like to install it as a regular program on my machine. But the installer doesn't work with NVDA on 7. I haven't tried it on 10 or 11. It starts and then gets stuck and won't continue reading the options. I am fairly certain this is an open source program. Would it be possible for a standard installer to be written or for theirs to somehow be fixed? In contrast, the portable version uses their installer and works beautifully.

I am having a problem signing in to my Ebay account. It keeps asking me to check a checkbox. I do so, and then, it gives me an inaccessible captcha with no audio alternative. I tried this on Windows 7, 10, and 11, with Firefox and Supermium, and nothing changes. I can't even read their accessibility page because it asks me to sign in and sending me back to the captchas! Is there a trustworthy captcha solver that works with NVDA or a way around this? Alternatively, does anyone here know of another site that sells vintage and antique things, or even another ebay replacement in general? I've been with them for over twenty years as a buyer, but if I need to change sites, I will do so. This is ridiculous!

:windows: Jeśli nadal używacie Windows 7, to znalazłem ostatnio przeglądarkę Chromium w aktualnej wersji przeportowaną na starsze windowsy. #Supermium zrobiona przez kanadyjczyków.

Windows 7 on my low-end PC. It's really snappy and I love it!
I've been using this for 2 days to test a Win32 program that I'm working on.
Ideally I want to disconnect from the Internet on this PC and use it for focused study.

I am putting all of my DOS projects, questions, and links here in case someone sees this and can help me with one or more of them.
@tspivey I am including you in the discussion because I think 3 will be of special interest to you. Please fee free to untag yourself from this if you don't wish to participate in the discussion. You may also message me privately if you would rather talk that way.I am a DOS user with a great ambition and also a few questions. Disclaimer: I am not a programmer, so I would either need to find someone who is or to try that vibe coding everyone is talking about. I would rather not do the latter, but I really have no knowledge on the subject, other than as a user of such software.
1. I wish to update an existing screen reader for use with modern versions of DOS. Ideally, though, I would like a modern version to be made fully accessible including installer. I wrote about this here. I am also interested in whether or not a true software synthesizer can be used with DOS, not via Windows. The SoundBlaster sounds interesting, but it might require actual hardware or a specific sort of computer.
2. In order to do this, I would rather update an existing screen reader than create a new one. It appears that Vispero now owns both JAWS for DOS and Vocal-Eyes, though whether they would make either of them open source I cannot say. I believe the original creator of ASAP, Larry Skutchan, is still alive. I recall writing to him some time ago, long before I had this idea, jhust to see if I could purchase the full version from him. If memory serves, he said he no longer has the software. But perhaps, he would permit me to reverse engineer it and update it. I would never do so without his permission. I know Provox is open source, but it's an extremely complicated system with no menus, etc. No matter what screen reader I use, it would all be open source. I have no interest in making money from this.

3. Right now, I am using Talking DosBox and would like to know if there is any way of updating it. It seems that it might be using a version of VreeDOS. When I use the ver command, it says 5.0, but when I start edit, it says something about FreeDOS. I know they're up to version 1.4 right now, which has several improvements, but I'm not sure if this can be upgraded directly in Talking DOSBox or if a new machine must be created. I would love to be able to just use a virtual machine in VMWare Workstation, but I can't install it without speech and don't know how to connnect it to the BNS driver, even if I could. I do have an MS-DOS virtual machine, but I can't get it to work for some reason, either under 32-bit or 64-bit. I installed Com0Com but nothing works. I have a wonderful mp3 with instructions somewhere, but I must find it in my files!

4. I am interested in learning QuickBasic 4.5. However, I heard of something called QB64 that can work with Windows XP through 7 and maybe later. I downloaded it, but the ide (interface) is completely inaccessible. I decided to just learn 4.5. for now, because the way to make QB64 work with a native Windows interface is a bit complicated and right now, I just want to start learning and practising. But if anyone can help with creating a native Windows version of QuickBasic (preferably one that works with Windows 7), that would be great!

Monday afternoon, a member of executive brings in a hired 3rd party piece of specialist hardware for an event that interfaces with an old laptop that runs Windows 7 and needs to talk to a device on our network. He needs it by Thursday. Gets annoyed at me when I ask him if he's kidding.

For now, please disregard the references to other services that Escargot no longer offers. This is a place where we can get to know each other and share contact information strictly for adding each other to Messenger (no real addresses, phone numbers, etc.). So I stumbled across the OG Steam Icon, which I thought would compliment my Windows 7 themeing I've got going on with my Bazzite install...which it totally does! It even changed the icon as it appears on the taskbar which further enhances the look... Pretty pleased with how this simple change really helps emulating the look of Windows 7! :apartyblobcat:

As a quick explanation, I use Thunderbird 102, and it works, but I want something lighter, faster, and less cluttered. My guess is that 68 is the last truly clean version, and then 78 and 91. I haven't tried the older ones yet, but I may do so. I tried Pegasus Mail, Claws Mail, and Sylpheed, but all were inaccessible with NVDA, despite having promising descriptions. OE Classic worked, but I couldn't get it to connect to GMail. I may be able to use it with my Yahoo account, but they actually still offer a very nice web interface via their Basic option, so it's not really necessary there. At any rate, below are the requirements.
1. Has read, reply, forward, write (including cc), send, delete, and search functionality, along with an address book. A spell checker would be nice but is not necessary.
2. Uses standard menus accessible via a menu bar (alt), with normal arrow key navigation, preferably with okay and cancel buttons after making changes. Also has other
keyboard shorttcuts, eliminating the need for a mouse for those who don't use one.
3. Can work with GMail and other providers that require
modern authentication.
4. Can handle at least two e-mail addresses.
5. Can work without downloading e-mails i.e. everything would be done on the server but from the client. I'm not sure if this one is even possible, so disregard if it's not.
6. Can work with Windows 7 through 11 (32 and 64-bit), though XP support would be nice.
That's it. I don't need ai, integration with other programs, features for businesses, folders that are not created by users and that they didn't ask for e.g. on GMail, all sorts of filters, or strange, modern interfaces.
If such a client doesn't exist, how difficult would it be for a programmer to create a website that could be used to access GMail? There was once something similar, called Mail2web. You would go there, enter the user name and password for your particular provider, and then see your e-mail on their site instead of that of the host.

Oh, bless the digital archeologists for finally unearthing "Swamp Castle" 🏰—the last dinosaur 🦖 to roam Windows 7 land. Now, prepare your tearful goodbyes 👋 to an OS that just won't die, because apparently, roller coasters need version numbers too. 🎢💾

I felt I wanted a change on my secondary computer (a mini PC I use for gaming) from my valve VGUI/AmigaOS combo theme, and felt like going for a Windows 7 look. Why 7 in particular? Just because I missed Aero with it's frosted glass-like transparency around the windows/taskbar and the 3D-ish close/minimise/maximise buttons of old. I'm pretty please this kitbash of several Win7-inspired theme assets looks - stars I missed Windows Aero! :apartyblobcat:

Genuine question I keep coming back to: if your favourite old OS had never been discontinued and just kept getting developed normally by their OG devs with proper modern hardware support, security patches and so on, which one would you actually want to daily drive today?
For me it's a tossup between Windows XP and Windows 7. I used both of them a lot when I was younger and honestly they felt basically the same to me at the time, but Windows 7 always seemed a bit easier to navigate.

It was just an odd chance that I even noticed it, but on a running #Windows7 PC that's rarely used now, I previously installed a v.2.5.4 copy of #GitHub #Desktop .
It was gone 2 minutes later, as I no longer use GitHub for my #repository, and it's certainly not needed on an essentially 'retired' machine - but it prompts a question...
Given all the #AI creeping into its ecosystem, did any of that code bleed over into the desktop app at some point?

Or better yet, revive Windows 7 and consider open-sourcing it.

P.S. Hier der Download-Link: https://archive.org/details/gamestar_1004

In 2024, GMail discontinued their Basic HTML layout. Why? I have no idea. They were probably using the same lack of logic that Youtube used in 2017, when they shut down their mobile site, and that Facebook used in 2024, when they shut down their Basic Mobile site. After all, why keep something that's easy, uncluttered, and that actually works, both with and without screen readers? I absolutely hated GMail's Standard site, and switched to Thunderbird 102 (I still prefer that version) because of it, though I hadn't used an e-mail client since 2006. After being forced to use their main site to fix something the other day, I began looking for another e-mail provider with a basic/plain html version. I found it in Yahoo Mail! I had actually signed up for an account with them in 2023 but never really used it. Tonight, I reactivated my account and tried it. It's wonderful! Note: Basic Yahoo Mail is not the same as Old Yahoo. I had to switch to Old and then go to Basic from there. However, you may be able to access it by going here.
PS. I know that some other blind people use regular GMail, but quite honestly, I don't care. I shouldn't have to learn a whole new set of commands just to access my e-mail and have to deal with a million features that I don't need. One of my mottos is don't fix what's not broken. Oh, and to my Windows XP and 7 friends, Basic Yahoo Mail works there, too.
