  1. It was just an odd chance that I even noticed it, but on a running #Windows7 PC that's rarely used now, I previously installed a v.2.5.4 copy of #GitHub #Desktop .

It was gone 2 minutes later, as I no longer use GitHub for my #repository, and it's certainly not needed on an essentially 'retired' machine - but it prompts a question...

Given all the #AI creeping into its ecosystem, did any of that code bleed over into the desktop app at some point?

  10. In 2024, GMail discontinued their Basic HTML layout. Why? I have no idea. They were probably using the same lack of logic that Youtube used in 2017, when they shut down their mobile site, and that Facebook used in 2024, when they shut down their Basic Mobile site. After all, why keep something that's easy, uncluttered, and that actually works, both with and without screen readers? I absolutely hated GMail's Standard site, and switched to Thunderbird 102 (I still prefer that version) because of it, though I hadn't used an e-mail client since 2006. After being forced to use their main site to fix something the other day, I began looking for another e-mail provider with a basic/plain html version. I found it in Yahoo Mail! I had actually signed up for an account with them in 2023 but never really used it. Tonight, I reactivated my account and tried it. It's wonderful! Note: Basic Yahoo Mail is not the same as Old Yahoo. I had to switch to Old and then go to Basic from there. However, you may be able to access it by going here.

    mail.yahoo.com/b/

PS. I know that some other blind people use regular GMail, but quite honestly, I don't care. I shouldn't have to learn a whole new set of commands just to access my e-mail and have to deal with a million features that I don't need. One of my mottos is don't fix what's not broken. Oh, and to my Windows XP and 7 friends, Basic Yahoo Mail works there, too.

  11. Not only did I just find a Mastodon client that works on Windows 7, but it is even designed specifically to work with screen readers! It will be very interesting to see what new features are added in the future, but for now, I should be able to at least read, reply to, and boost posts, and to write my own.

  13. It's time for a vote! last year, I was lucky enough to findnot one, but two Acer Aspire One D270s. The first was sold as an extra, but worked well. The second was still sealed in the box! I never thought I would have the pleasure of opening a brand new netbook again. But to this day, I still haven't done so. Now, I have two choices, though I guess three, if I send both off.

    1. Have the keyboard replaced, and the drive and Windows upgraded to 7 Professional on my open one.
    2. Open the new one and have the drive, Windows, and ram upgraded.
    3. Send both machines in and have the above work done.
Technically, on both machines, the drives are fine. They are 320gb models, so they have more than enough space for my needs. But they're 5400 rpm drives, and I want either a 7200 rpm replacement or a solid state one. My open machine has 2gb of ram, which is all the D270 can officially take. I have heard of some people installing 4gb and Windows seeing something like 2.9gb (I forget the exact number, but it wasn't the full 4), but I have also read that it's not always stable and there could be some problems with booting. Can anyone confirm this? If I keep it at 2gb, I am guessing it would make sense to use a 32-bit version of Windows 7 and not a 64-bit one. All of my programs except Reddit for Blind, Accessible Youtube Downloader, and TweeseCake are 32-bit, but only Reddit for Blind works on 7. I am still trying to get the others to work, but that may be an issue with this particular virtual machine.

So, which should I do? Open the new machine, or just send in the old one?

  14. @ai6yr I've seen a few professionals still use Windows XP/7 although not connected to the web, just to do their job. They know keyboard shortcuts of the programs they use, they work real damn fast with it, and most importantly it's what works for them.

Preferably I wish they'd try out a Linux distro and see if they can replicate their workflow there but yeah. I follow the rule of "don't fix what ain't broke."

  15. I just heard from the developer that it is not possible to make FastSM compatible with Windows 7. This leaves TWBlue, unless there is another client I'm missing. I know that TWBlue does have an older version that works with 7, so I'm guessing it's just a matter of updating certain things to give it the features of the latest version. Sadly, as I said in the past, TweeseCake is not open source, so that's not an option. As for why I don't do it myself, I am not a programmer.

  19. For those who love MSN/Windows Live Messenger, it has been revived! This site has been around for awhile, but I thought I should mention it for those who don't know about it and also for those who are tired of modern messaging programs which are often inaccessible. Note that you must create a free account with them and cannot use an old hotmail address or whatever you used with Microsoft's version. This is the same software, but modified to work on their servers. For that reason, even if you have the original on your computer, you should install theirs. There is a way to patch an existing one, but why go through all the trouble? Escargot works on Windows, from XP through 11, and it is completely accessible with NVDA, minus the games, which never worked with screen readers anyway. There are IOS and Android versions, but I have no idea how well they work in general, let alone with VoiceOver or Talkback. If you wish to add me, I am [email protected]. The site can be found here.

For those who worry about security, , these two browsers are updated regularly. Both work with XP and 7. Supermium also allows you to connect to your Google account and is built off of Chrome. Serpent is updated weekly. In both cases, you must manually check on the websites for updates. Serpent is based off of Firefox, but it cannot connect to a Firefox account. It does, however, use its own servers. Both of these are also accessible with NVDA, whereas several other such browsers that work with older systems are not. You may need to search down the page for Serpent, though. Note that Icedove (like Thunderbird) is also accessible.

Here is a list of legacy programs that work with 7 and XP, though versions may differ i.e. not all may work with XP but all should work with 7. Note that some programs on the main page of this site still work on XP and 7, but since they never dropped support for those systems, there is no need for a legacy version. Among the ones I use in this category are Balabolka, Clamwin, Cook Timer, DFG and JKDefrag (only used on regular hard drives, not solid state), File Optimizer, Free Alarm Clock, HWiNFO, Jarte, KCleaner, MPCHC (Media Player Classic), MSS (Microsoft Safety Scanner), Opal (haven't tried on XP but works on 7), and Revo Uninstaller (not current/inaccessible with NVDA even on 11, must use version 1.49). Reddit for Blind (not on below site) also works on Windows 7 64-bit and Thunderbird 102 works on 7, all versions. I use it even on 11. Auto Hotkey 1 and 2 work on XP and 7.

If you use NVDA, note that, along with the latest version, those that work with XP and 7 (2017.3 and 2023.3, respectively) are available on their site. If you wish to install 7, it is important to have either talking Windows PE or a disk, usb stick (or iso if working on a virtual machine) with NVDA installed, since unlike 10 and 11, you cannot use Narrator during installation. I have never been able to install XP on my own, so unfortunately, I can't help you there.

  23. The x86 edition of Windows 7 was the last revision of Windows capable of running classic 16-bit games and software. It's also so much easier to run and maintain than Windows 9x/NT/2000 or even XP. I'll need to explore this further for my retro collection! 😉

P.S. It's now an hour later and I finally managed to reproduce what I did to make that happen. Hint: You need to manually installl the following patches:

I don't think I've been able to do the same thing when I was still using Windows. gmod's prone to crashing regardless of operating system but yeah.

I'll prolly do some more gmod fun l8rs cos I don't have any games to play right now.

  26. It's funny too cos prior to all of that, I had a laptop that had an AMD Athlon X2 QL-64, an NVIDIA 8200M G, and 4 gigs of DDR2-667 RAM. Yes. 4 gigs of DDR2 RAM.

It was my first ever PC. It was running Windows 7 when I got it. It prolly ran Windows Vista originally but I got Windows 10 to run on it even though the components are from 2008. It's also the device where I first dipped into Linux, starting with Ubuntu 18.04.

  27. *If anyone can help me with this, I would sincerely appreciate it. I have no interest in discussing whether Windows 7 is supported or not. I know it's not, and I am choosing to use it. I have everything I need, except a Mastodon client, so right now, I am using 11. And no, I have no interest in Linux either.*
I normally use TweeseCake, but it doesn't work on Windows 7, and it's closed source, so there is no way of changing that. Apparently, there is a version of TWBlue that did, but I can't find it. I just tried a client called Fast SM, and it's wonderful. However, it doesn't work on 7 either. Judging by the Github page, it seems to be written in Python. I am not a programmer, but would it be possible to get modern TwBlue or Fast SM to work with Windows 7? Both of these are open source. If not, then does anyone have the old version of TWBlue?

Finally, it seems that, unlike TweeseCake, the others have some sort of retrieval limit. If, for example, I'm not on Mastodon for a day or two and have 400 notifications, TweeseCake shows all of them. But the others only show a certain number far below that. Why is this, and can it be changed?

As a side note, I tried Whalebird and it was an absolute disaster with NVDA.
