Videoconference community servers

The open Jitsi Meet instances I was using for community videocalls all require a login, now.

Are there any videoconferencing community servers that are still open, or where I could ask to have an account?

The last thing I want to do is self-host a video conferencing software, unless it’s something simple and light.

Also: has anyone been trying other software solutions beyond BigBlueButton and Jitsi Meet? Happy to test reliable alternatives you recommend.

Do we have any Jitsi meet experts on here? I want to record my meetings, and it’s proven to be a PITA. The official Jitsi answer is like “log in to Github and download this package, then open the terminal, and install on the command line, but oh btw you also have to have three other terminal processes installed that you have to figure out on your own.” No. Ostensibly I can record screen and sound from the control center of my iPhone, and it works in testing, but every time I try to record an actual meeting, it only saves the video, with no sound. Is there a secret trick or obstacle? What can I do?

Anyone knows what happened to the jitsi.org domain or the #Jitsi project? The domain jitsi.org seems to be "on hold" according to its Whois entry. And all DNS entries of the domain result in an NXDOMAIN response (i.e. are no more existing).

So there are also no more security updates of #JitsiMeet possible. (That's how I noticed.)

Does anyone have experience self-hosting Jitsi Meet? I'm already running apache2, so I can't use nginx-full as per the default instructions.

Jitsi configured the main domain, but I wasn't sure if I need to also add its subdomains (e.g. if I have meet.example.tld, do I also need to setup apache configs for conference.meet.example.tld and so on?).

What if video conference URLs on services running software like #BigBlueButton and #JitsiMeet included a portion that was coded to a time period? So conference organisers could effectively book a block of time in a room. Only invited people with that time-coded link could get in, and random people couldn't stumble into a conference session just by entering the general URL for the room.

If someone's priorities are a modern camera, running proprietary Android apps and their money is held hostage by banks requiring #Duopoly apps, they should check back later, perhaps when the Librem 5 "Fir" model is released.

On the other hand, if #FreeSoftware, #privacy, #modularity, #repairability, #ecofriendliness, #decentralisation, #digitalindependence, etc. are valued above other things, the Librem 5 and the higher-spec model, the #LibertyPhone, can absolutely work in 2025 and beyond.

I am daily driving a #Librem5 with #postmarketOS and everything important to me works: VoLTE calls and SMS (although I avoid them due to #SaltTyphoon), 4G data, Wi-Fi, camera with OK quality photos (see: #ShotOnLibrem5), GPS with #PureMaps, web browsing with #FirefoxESR, web apps (including banking) using #GNOMEWeb and #BraveBrowser, email using #Geary and #DeltaChat, audio calls on #SignalMessenger, #Matrix ( #ElementMessenger), #XMPP ( #DinoIM), #JitsiMeet, etc.

There are occasional bugs and quirks, and the device itself has limitations but nothing that I can't work around.
